It is due to the Public to state that, in order to procure informa- tion for the " City " portion of this Directory, from Five to Six Thousand Schedules were issued, for the purpose of being filled up by the Inhabitants. In transcribing these Schedules, the utmost care was taken to preserve the exact address and orthography of Name which had been given; and, still farther to preserve the accuracy of the Work, the ' whole of the Names, after they had been put into type, were again, at a large sacrifice of time, care- fully compared, one by one, with the original Schedules. The " County " Directory, which forms an important part of the Work, has been made up from returns furnished, in almost every instance, by the Schoolmasters of the respective Parishes. To the Gentlemen who have thus so kindly assisted him, the Publisher gladly embraces the present opportunity of returning his most grateful thanks. The short delay which has occurred in getting the Work issued, has been as much a disappointment to the Publisher as it can have been to his Subscribers. To those of them, however, who may have been incommoded by the delay, he begs to offer a respectful apology, and to assure them that, from the complicated and laborious nature of the Work, (this Directory being an entirely new compilation), the delay was found to be quite un- avoidable.

  • The Parish of Wemyss
THE PARISH OF WEMYSS. delightfully situated estate of Wemyss, or Wemyss- THEshire as it was anciently called, derives its name from the caves which are found on the shore within its bounds, the Celtic for cave being Uamh. The history of the " " parish is practically the history of the Kingdom in- deed the history of the Kingdom of Scotland. The caves or Weems, with their rude sculpturings. take us back to the period of the Roman invasion, perhaps further, while in the history of the Wemyss Family we have, as Sir William Fraser reminds us, one of the longest and purest of Scottish pedigrees, going back for seven centuries. Many members of the family held high office in the State in far- off days, and in the archives of Wemyss Castle there are documents which are of national as well as local interest. From time immemorial coal has been worked in the district, and the documents which have been preserved bearing on the great mining industry for centuries are to many as interesting as the papers which give us glimpses at the politics and the government of other days. The extreme length of the parish from south-west to north-east is about 5| miles, while its breadth varies from 1 to 2 miles. In contradistinction to the sea-beach of Scoonie, the beach is bold and rocky. The parish is bounded on the east by Markinch and Scoonie, on the north by Kennoway and Mark inch, arid on the west by THE PARISH OF WEMYSS. 127 Dysart. The Government census returns only go back to 1801, but according to returns drawn up by Dr Webster there were 3041 souls in the parish in 1755, and here is a fairly accurate return which was compiled for the minister of the parish in 1791 : Families.

PUBLISHED FAMILY HISTORIES [Over the years The Fife Family History Society Journal has reviewed many published Fife family histories. We have gathered them all together here, and will add to the file as more become available. Many of the family histories are hard to find, but some are still available on the antiquarian market. Others are available as Print on Demand; while a few can be found as Google books] GUNDAROO (1972) By Errol Lea-Scarlett, tells the story of the settlement of the Township of Gundaroo in the centre of the Yass River Valley of NSW, AUS, and the families who built up the town. One was William Affleck (1836-1923) from West Wemyss, described as "Gundaroo's Man of Destiny." He was the son of Arthur Affleck, grocer at West Wemyss, and Ann Wishart, and encourged by letters from the latter's brother, John (Joseph Wiseman) Wishart, the family emigrated to NSW late in October 1854 in the ship, "Nabob," with their children, William and Mary, sole survivors of a family of 13, landing at Sydney on 15 February 1855. The above John Wishart, alias Joseph Wiseman, the son of a Fife merchant, had been convicted of forgery in 1839 and sentenced to 14 years transportation to NSW. On obtaining his ticket of leave in July 1846, he took the lease of the Old Harrow, in which he established a store - the "Caledonia" - and in 1850 added to it a horse-powered mill at Gundaroo some 18 months later. He was the founder of the family's fortunes, and from the 1860s until about 1900 the Afflecks owned most of the commercial buildings in the town.
