  • An Analysis of Billfish Landings in the Pelagic Fisheries in Sri Lanka R
AN ANALYSIS OF BILLFISH LANDINGS IN THE PELAGIC FISHERIES IN SRI LANKA R. Maldeniya, P. Dayaratne, and P.D.K.D. Amarasooriya National Aquatic Resources Agency Crow Island, Colombo 15 Sri Lanka As there are many types of vessel and gear combinations INTRODUCTION contributing to the billfish landings in the island, analyses were made separately for different combinations. With the expansion of the fishing range of the large pelagic fishing fleet in early 1980s (Dayaratne, 1993), a substantial increase of billfish catches, from around 4,000 RESULTS t in 1984 to 11,000 t in 1993, was realised, highlighting their importance in the offshore fisheries in Sri Lanka. Fishing gear and effort The present production level makes up about 7% of the total large pelagics landed in the island and around 32% Billfish is not the target group in any of the local of the total billfish landed in the Indian Ocean commercial fisheries directed toward large pelagics. They (Anon,1995). form an important incidental catch in gillnets, longlines and troll lines. Vessels operating these gears are primarily Studies of billfish and their fisheries around Sri Lanka are engaged in catching tunas. Traditional vessels, 6-7 m limited and mainly based on the landings made from the boats with outboard motors and 9-m boats, operate one- coastal waters, prior to the development of offshore day fishing in coastal waters, <30 km from the shore, fisheries. Jinadasa (1985) reported on the species while >10-11 m boats and those over 10 m generally composition, size range and abundance of sailfish and operate multi-day fishing in the offshore and deep-sea marlin caught in the waters off Negombo, on the west area.
