Amarasooriya National Aquatic Resources Agency Crow Island, Colombo 15 Sri Lanka As there are many types of vessel and gear combinations INTRODUCTION contributing to the billfish landings in the island, analyses were made separately for different combinations. With the expansion of the fishing range of the large pelagic fishing fleet in early 1980s (Dayaratne, 1993), a substantial increase of billfish catches, from around 4,000 RESULTS t in 1984 to 11,000 t in 1993, was realised, highlighting their importance in the offshore fisheries in Sri Lanka.
