Baroque Ensemble Program 12-6-18.Pdf
Our ensemble uses a set of baroque bows patterned after existing historic examples BYU – IDAHO DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC PRESENTS from the early 18th century. These bows are lighter, shorter, and have a slight outward curve resulting in characteristic baroque articulation -- a strong, quick down bow and a light, softer up bow, meant to emphasize the inequalities of strong and weak beats. Basso continuo refers to the preferred harmonic accompaniment used during the baroque era. From a printed bass line with a few harmonic clues indicated as numerical “figures,” musicians improvised chordal accompaniments which best fit the unique qualities of their instruments and supported the upper solo lines -- similar to the way a modern jazz rhythm section will “comp” behind a vocal or saxophone solo. This single bass line might include a colorful variety of both melodic and chord playing instruments. Tonight’s basso continuo section includes: • Harpsichord, featuring plucked brass strings across a light wood frame, resulting in a delicate, transparent tone which contrasts with the strong iron frame and hammered tone of the modern piano • Baroque style organ, using a mechanical “tracker” mechanism instead of electronics to route air to each pipe This evening’s performance features suites, sinfonia and concerti by prominent composers from the 17th and early 18th century: § The prolific Antonio Vivaldi is known for his development of three- movement concerto form. An extravagant violinist, he carried the nickname “il prete roso” (the red priest) because of his red hair. § Johann Heinrich Schmelzer was recognized in his day as Vienna's foremost violin virtuoso and a leading composer. -

Indeed, its delicate sound was more suitable in the inner chambers of courts and the quiet gardens of bourgeois villas than in the uproarious battle fields and the busy streets of towns. KEYWORDS Lute, Trecento, Italy, Bas instrument, Giullari any studies on the origin of the lute begin with ancient Mesopota- mian, Egyptian, Greek, or Roman musical instruments that carry a fingerboard (either long or short) over which various numbers M 2 of strings stretch. The Arabic ud, first widely introduced into Europe by the Moors during their conquest of Spain in the eighth century, has been suggest- ed to be the direct ancestor of the lute. If this is the case, not much is known about when, where, and how the European lute evolved from the ud. The presence of Arabs in the Iberian Peninsula and their cultivation of musical instruments during the middle ages suggest that a variety of instruments were made by Arab craftsmen in Spain. -

Songs in Fixed Forms by Margaret P. Hasselman 1 Introduction Fourteenth century France saw the development of several well-defined song structures. In contrast to the earlier troubadours and trouveres, the 14th-century songwriters established standardized patterns drawn from dance forms. These patterns then set up definite expectations in the listeners. The three forms which became standard, which are known today by the French term "formes fixes" (fixed forms), were the virelai, ballade and rondeau, although those terms were rarely used in that sense before the middle of the 14th century. (An older fixed form, the lai, was used in the Roman de Fauvel (c. 1316), and during the rest of the century primarily by Guillaume de Machaut.) All three forms make use of certain basic structural principles: repetition and contrast of music; correspondence of music with poetic form (syllable count and rhyme); couplets, in which two similar phrases or sections end differently, with the second ending more final or "closed" than the first; and refrains, where repetition of both words and music create an emphatic reference point. Upper-case letters indicate that both text and music are identical. Lower-case letters indicate that a section of music is repeated with different words, which necessarily follow the same poetic form and rhyme-scheme. 1. Virelai The virelai consists of a refrain; a contrasting verse section, beginning with a couplet (two halves with open and closed endings), and continuing with a section which uses the music and the poetic form of the refrain; and finally a reiteration of the refrain. -

This dissertation examines fourteen short verse romances, grouped by story-type into three categories. They are: type 1: romances of lost heirs (Degaré, Chevelere Assigne, Sir Perceval of Galles, Lybeaus Desconus, and Octavian); type 2: romances about winning a bride (Floris and Blancheflour, The Erle of Tolous, Sir Eglamour of Artois, Sir Degrevant, and the Amis– Belisaunt plot from Amis and Amiloun); type 3: romances of impoverished knights (Amiloun’s story from Amis and Amiloun, Sir Isumbras, Sir Amadace, Sir Cleges, and Sir Launfal). The analysis is based on contextualized close reading, drawing on the theories of Pierre Bourdieu. The results show that Middle English romance has no standard criteria for defining nobility, but draws on the full range on contemporary opinion; understandings of nobility conflict both between and within texts. Ideological consistency is seldom a priority, and the genre apparently serves neither a single socio-political agenda, nor a single socio-political group. The dominant conception of nobility in each romance is determined by the story-type. Romance type 1 presents nobility as inherent in the blood, type 2 emphasizes prowess and force of will, and type 3 concentrates on virtue. -

It is not a diplomatic transcription, but rather an edition employing a simplified form of fourteenth-century French (ars nova) notation in score. Note-values have been left unreduced. Under the reigning mensuration (0. ) there are up to three minims (M) in each semibreve (S), up to three semibreves in each breve (B), and two breves in each long (L). When triple divisions of notes are involved, two processes occur in ars nova notation which do not happen in modern notation. In imperfec- tion, a smaller note “takes” value from a longer one so that the two together can add up to three beats. I argue that the sequences, conductus, and motets discussed herein were composed with the express purpose of constituting and reifying normative gender roles for medieval queen-consorts. Although not every paraliturgical work in the English ii repertory may be classified as such, I argue that those works that feature female exemplars— model women who exemplified the traits, behaviors, and beliefs desired by the medieval Christian hegemony—should be reassessed in light of their historical and cultural moments. These liminal works, neither liturgical nor secular in tone, operate similarly to visual icons in order to create vivid images of exemplary women saints or Biblical figures to which queen- consorts were both implicitly as well as explicitly compared. The Iconography of Queenship is organized into four chapters, each of which examines an occasional musical work and seeks to situate it within its own unique historical moment. In addition, each chapter poses a specific historiographical problem and seeks to answer it through an analysis of the occasional work.
