Different from mainline churches, religious leadership in neo-Pentecostal (In many parts of the world, neo-Pentecostal or new Pentecostal churches have emerged since the 1980s. They are usually independent churches, organized in loose national or transnational networks, Anderson 2004) churches is not legitimised by denominational traditions and the ordination of clergy but by ‘pastorpre- neurs’, (Twitchell uses the term pastorpreneurs to describe megachurch pastors who by using marketing techniques and other entrepreneurial business skills create stand-alone religious communities that challenge top- down denominationalism (2007:3). -

How Neoliberal Governance Facilitated the Growth of Australian Suburban-Based Pentecostal Megachurches
religions Article ‘An Unstoppable Force for Good’?: How Neoliberal Governance Facilitated the Growth of Australian Suburban-Based Pentecostal Megachurches Mairead Shanahan School of Social and Cultural Studies, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington 6012, New Zealand; [email protected] Received: 14 September 2019; Accepted: 21 October 2019; Published: 3 November 2019 Abstract: Hillsong Church has received significant scholarly attention, which has observed the church’s rapid local and global growth. Several other Australian-based Pentecostal churches demonstrate a similar growth trajectory to Hillsong Church, namely: C3 Church, Citipointe Church, Planetshakers, and Influencers Church. To further scholarly understanding of aspects of this rapid growth, this paper discusses the emergence of economic rationalist policies which led to the neoliberal governance context in Australia. The paper argues that the emergence of this policy context, which emphasises marketization and privatisation, provided opportunities for suburban-based Pentecostal churches to expand activities beyond conducting worship services. The paper analyses materials produced by Hillsong Church, C3 Church, Citipointe Church, Planetshakers, and Influencers Church and associated educational, charity, and financial organisations. Through this analysis, the paper finds that the emergence of a neoliberal governance context in Australia provided opportunities for these churches to expand activities beyond traditional worship ceremonies to include additional activities -

The Institution, the Ethic, and the Affect: The Hillsong Church and the Production of Multiple Affinities of the Self Submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Arts & Commerce, with Honours in Sociology College of Arts & Social Sciences, Australian National University Matthew Wade 2010 1 Unless otherwise acknowledged in the text, this thesis represents the original research of the author: Signed:………………………… Matthew Wade 2 Acknowledgments I would like to express the greatest of thanks to my Honours supervisor, Dr Maria Hynes. Dr Hynes’ relentless positivity, gentle encouragement, and of course brilliant insight were absolutely invaluable. Warm thanks also go to Dr Rachel Bloul and Dr Joanna Sikora for their guidance, as well as my fellow classmates. Lastly, I give guarded thanks to the Hillsong Church, an institution that at once is endlessly fascinating, inspiring, and unnerving. 3 Abstract The Hillsong Church, based in Sydney, is the Australian exemplar of the ‘megachurch’ phenomena, characterised by large, generally non- denominational churches with evangelical, ‘seeker-friendly’ aspirations and adoption of contemporary worship methods. Given the increasingly large following the Church commands, there is surprisingly little scholarly research on Hillsong, particularly from the perspective of Sociology. This study seeks to contribute to a sociological understanding of the phenomenon of Hillsong by analysing the particular ways that its doctrine and practices evoke and respond to crises of the self in modernity. Hillsong does not rail against the developments associated with modernity, rather, the Church consciously evangelises in recognition of them, managing to both empower the individual and also act as a bulwark against more dehumanising elements of modern society. -

Pastor Bakss occasionally asks the question, "What's wrong with Hillsong?" and some pastors give discerning answers, but we perceive that he is not listening. It may be that his question is a rhetorical question, asked for effect, asked to influence, not for information. We give thanks that rhetorical questions give us opportunity to supply real answers, and though neo-fundamentalists smile and shrug off the answers we give, there is yet a remnant who love truth and cherish it above euphoric experience. -
Tongues on Fire
"And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third, teachers..." 1 Corinthians 12:28. Tongues on Fire Authored by Pastor Leslie Barnett. https:// newprophecymovement.com.au INTRODUCTION "The Apostle" is a must-read for those who are curious to know the driving force behind Scott Morrison's Pentecostal faith and the Church which he and his family attend. Born 13/05/58 Scott Morrison was raised an Anglican who later became a Pentecostal and now attends the Horizon Church which is affiliated with the (ACC ) Australian branch of the (AoG) Assemblies of God. Leslie says that Morrison has shown the Australian public strong leadership, not only when advocating for religious freedom, but when handling the Coronavirus epidemic. But lurking over Morrison's Christian ethics lies a dark cloud of suspicion when refusing to answer questions over his invite to Brian Houston's accompaniment to a White House function; and how when pressured by the Labor opposition and 2GB talk back radio confirmed the once deemed rumour to be true. The author says; that according to Labour, Morison's association with Brian Houston is simply a vote winner despite findings of the 2014 royal commission into child sexual abuse whereby Brain's indictment for harboring his fathers pedophilia is still pending. This indictment says Brain Houston's critics will never succeed due to Brains standing as one of the world’s most powerful pastors when building a multi million dollar tax free Hillsong empire; which pulls 100,000 people around the world into mega-churches each weekend to shows of glitz and glamour. -

In 1983, Brian, with his wife Bobbie, founded Hills Christian Life Centre, and the associated music label, Hillsong, in the Hills District of Sydney, Australia. Affiliated churches were established through the 1980s and 1990s, and spread to other countries. The London church was formed in 1992. In 2000, Brian and Bobbie merged the Christian Life Centre churches under the new name of Hillsong Church, partly because of the success of the music label. 1 “Hillsong Church” BELIEFS AND PRACTICES Hillsong subscribes to the belief statement of the Australian Christian Churches – described as “Bible-loving, evangelical and Pentecostal, and are about connecting people to Jesus Christ.” The Bible is taken as “God’s word” and as authoritative. -

Alphacrucis College: The formation and development of the national training college of Australian Christian Churches (Assemblies of God in Australia)1 Denise A. Austin: Alphacrucis Director of Quality and Standards, Academic Director Queensland and Head of History Presented 27 August 2013 at the World Alliance for Pentecostal Theological Education INTRODUCTION Since its inception in 1937, Australian Christian Churches (Assemblies of God in Australia AGA) has transformed from a small, fragmented sect, into a substantial denomination with far-reaching impact. Based on oral interviews, extensive archival research and analysis of secondary sources, this paper argues that the AGA national training institution, Alphacrucis College (formerly Commonwealth Bible College then Southern Cross College), has been integral to this outstanding vitality and growth. Modelled after flourishing Bible schools in the United States and Great Britain, the college served to bring national unity, Pentecostal emphasis, missional evangelism and focused stewardship. Despite a series of crises and severe financial constraints, growth and maturity came as popular, high-profile, alumni leaders and the churches of Australia supported the vision of the college. Its faculty provided quality education in an inspiring faith environment, while building an international reputation, pioneering innovative practices and reaching independent accreditation. HISTORICAL FOUNDATIONS With a vision for growth, the AGA national college was modelled on missional- focussed 19th century
