TIME, MEMORY, NOSTALGIA THE NINTH INTERNATIONAL GRAPHIC NOVEL AND COMICS CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY 27TH – FRIDAY 29TH JUNE 2018 BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY, UK Retro – a looking to the past – is everywhere in contemporary culture. Cultural critics like Jameson argue that retro and nostalgia are symptoms of postmodernism – that we can pick and choose various items and cultural phenomena from different eras and place them together in a pastiche that means little and decontextualizes their historicity. However, as Bergson argues in Memory and Matter, the senses evoke memories, and popular culture artefacts like comics can bring the past to life in many ways. The smell and feel of old paper can trigger memories just as easily as revisiting an old haunt or hearing a piece of music from one’s youth. As fans and academics we often look to the past to tell us about the present. We may argue about the supposed ‘golden age’ of comics. Our collecting habits may even define our lifestyles and who we are. But nostalgia has its dark side and some regard this continuous looking to the past as a negative emotion in which we aim to restore a lost adolescence. In Mediated Nostalgia, Ryan Lizardi argues that the contemporary media fosters narcissistic nostalgia ‘to develop individualized pasts that are defined by idealized versions of beloved lost media texts’ (2). This argument suggests that fans are media dupes lost in a reverie of nostalgic melancholia; but is belied by the diverse responses of fandom to media texts. Moreover, ‘retro’ can be taken to imply an ironic appropriation. -

Announcing the PIX 2017 Special Guests
Announcing the PIX 2017 Special Guests Anya Davidson brings a diverse background and skill set to her comics making practice. Her work often pairs the work-a-day world with the world of fantasy; blending the quotidian and the fantastic. Her most recent works are Band for Life (Fantagraphics; 2016), a pæan to life in a band, and Lovers in the Garden (Retrofit; 2017), a ‘70s urban genre drama. Lane Milburn was a founding member of the Closed Captions Comics Cooperative that came together in the mid-00s at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). He is noted for hand crafted comics like The Mage’s Tower (2008). His epic science fiction graphic novel Twelve Gems was published in 201. He has continued to make innovative use of genre comics tropes and conventions in comics such as Spectral Worlds. Ed Piskor is a Made-in-Pittsburgh comics success story. He got his first big break from Harvey Pekar with whom he went on to have numerous collaborations. Piskor then dove head first into the world of self-publishing, with Wizzywig, his tale of phone-phreakers and proto-hackers before launching Hip Hop Family Tree, which has since grown to be a global sensation, connecting the worlds of hip hop and comics. PLEASE NOTE: Ed Piskor’s primary appearance at PIX 2017 will be 7 - 10pm on the evening of Saturday, April 8 at the opening of his exhibition, Hermetically Sealed, at The ToonSeum. Jim Rugg is a comics industry legend based here in Pittsburgh, PA. A tireless technical innovator, Rugg has steadily added to the visual vocabulary of comics, with his game-changing use of Photoshop and dynamic layouts. -

INTRODUCTION In 2007, the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road , the original scroll on which the novel was based toured the country and was published for the first time in book form by Viking. This literary document, which was purchased for a record sum of $2.43 million, has taken on a mythology befitting its scripture-like appearance. According to the legend, after three furious and Benzedrine-fueled weeks in April 1951, Kerouac emerged from a New York City apartment with a complete novel of more than 120,000 words. The work represented a radical challenge to conventional literary tastes: it was typed on a 120-foot-long scroll of teletype paper and contained virtually no punctuation. After his publisher Harcourt Brace rejected it, Kerouac replied, “It was dictated by the Holy Spirit! It doesn’t need editing!” As the legend has it, the novel that was eventually published as On the Road six years later was but a tame, heavily censored version of the original. The reality of the story is quite different. Howard Cunnell in his introduction to On the Road: The Original Scroll punctures several myths surrounding the scroll, including Kerouac’s use of Benzedrine (he took nothing stronger than coffee), its physical appearance (it was actually typed on long sheets of drawing paper not teletype paper), and its disregard of punctuation (it is for the most part conventionally punctuated). More importantly, the scroll did not emerge out of thin air – since 1947, Kerouac had made several attempts to begin his road novel, all of which he came to realize were false starts. -
