Studio Albums 1970-74 (2019 Remaster) In the midst of the 90s when hip-hop was going through its golden age, a revolution within soul music was also underway. With Erykah Badu, D’angelo, Jill Scott and many others, the genre found again its class: an echo of the simplicity and refinement that brought to life the albums of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Roberta Flack. After years in the shadow of the reigning ultra-commercial and soft R&B, the noticeably more underground Neo Soul, or Nu Soul, relit the flame of soul music and returned it to its roots in terms of both composition and lyricism. A brief but highly influential movement. Eight years after Random Access Memories transcended the artistic concept that had begun with Homework eighteen years earlier, Daft Punk have brought things to a halt. It is as if to say that no further reinvention was possible after their last album, which was the culmination of a career that paid tribute to the pop culture of the 1970s and 1980s. More than 45 years before the success of the "Black Panther" movie, Hollywood targeted the Afro-American community by providing them with customized heroes. From "Shaft" to "Super Fly" and passing by "Blacula", the Blaxploitation offered at the time thrillers, comedies and even vampire movies, and worth noting, the music contained a few groovy 70s gems. The Bravest Man in the Universe. Damon Albarn enlisted Bobby Womack to sing on Gorillaz's 2010 album Plastic Beach, pushing the great soul singer back into action after a prolonged period of silence. Remarkably, the unlikely pair struck up a friendship, a partnership that led to 2012's The Bravest Man in the Universe, Womack's first album in 13 years. Signing with Richard Russell's XL Records, Womack collaborated with his longtime cohort Harold Payne, Albarn, and Russell on this ghostly, skeletal soul collection, each man bringing his own signatures to the table. Russell's beats intertwine with Albarn's spectral chords, each evoking distinct memories of his past work, but even if there are clear antecedents in Russell's production of Gil Scott-Heron or the futuristic funk oeuvre of Gorillaz, these two do not bend Womack to fit their needs: they free him to make a startlingly modern Bobby Womack album, one that harks back to such previous masterworks as Understanding and The Poet, albums that fully embodied both the singer and his times. And so it is with The Bravest Man in the Universe, an album that sounds like 2012 as much as it sounds like Womack: the rhythms belong to the modern world, the slow, shimmering grooves undeniably Womack's, as he's been specializing in this sound since the turn of the '70s. Initially, the most bracing elements of The Bravest Man in the Universe are those electronic flourishes from Russell and Albarn and, most of all, the power of Womack's singing. He's showing signs of age -- his voice is etched and weathered -- but he sounds undiminished, both as a vocalist and as a man. This is not a quiet, mournful album about the dying of the light; this is about living in the moment, embracing age and modernity with equal enthusiasm. The past is present on The Bravest Man in the Universe -- nowhere more so than on "Dayglo Reflection," where a song by Womack mentor Sam Cooke is interpolated and chanteuse of the year Lana Del Rey is deployed as effectively ethereal counterpart, but Bobby covers the traditional "Deep River" and revives "Whatever Happened to the Times," a song he co-wrote with his old running partner Jim Ford -- although Womack is never beholden to time gone by; the old days are part of him, informing how he's facing the present, and there's nothing remotely approaching nostalgia here. For as haunting as parts of the album are, there is no fetishization of death on the parts of Albarn and Russell; even with a tinge of melancholy coloring the fringes of the album, this is an album that affirms the power of life, in all of its mess and glory. The Poet II. Purchase and download this album in a wide variety of formats depending on your needs. Buy the album Starting at £11.49. Though Bobby Womack's in great voice, The Poet II doesn't quite hit the same heights as The Poet, which successfully executed ideas Womack had been tinkering with since 1979's Roads of Life. This seeks the success The Poet got by surprise. Womack's skill is his pragmatic take on relationships, but on The Poet II his aim is a little off. "Love Has Finally Come at Last" is the first of three duets with Patti LaBelle. The duet idea works better on "It Takes a Lot of Strength to Say Goodbye"; it sounds better suited for two singers, and the dramatic arrangement and chemistry between Womack and LaBelle are strong but not that exciting. The Poet II also features some over-produced though skillful dance tracks. "Tell Me Why" is effective and has Womack asking why his relationship is failing and uses his children as pawns when he sings, "You don't have to do it for me/But do it for the sake of the kids." By the end of the album, Womack's lack of winning premises starts to catch up with him. "I Wish I Had Someone to Come Home To" has him sounding a little phony with lyrics like "Ain't no way this lonely man can seem to win." Fans of Womack know he'd think up something to do. The effort's last track, "American Dream," features snippets of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. With its so-so lyrics and plodding arrangement, it just falls apart within the first two minutes. The Poet II is no doubt a good Bobby Womack album, but it is clear that he can do much better. © Jason Elias /TiVo..

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

EPs and statistics have always been desirable to the record collector, and no definitive book on every EP issued has ever been published. Vintage Records did issue the long deleted “Collectable EPs” (published in 1982) of British EPs, but this was a personal selection chosen by the long gone London record shop, but does contain what they consider over 3700 vintage obscurities. The “British Hit EPs” book I consider as a bolt-on reference book to “Collectable EPs” which focuses on the hit EPs only. The source gleaned from the Record Retailer, Music Week, Record Mirror and New Record Mirror, therefore the combination of the two books does provide a comprehensive guide for the EP researcher. “British Hit EPs” contains a brief history of the EP which is interesting reading, but the “Technical Notes” and the “How The Information is Presented” do need some digesting before ploughing into the data. The EPs are listed per artist in alpha order showing all their releases, issue dates and track listing, and every page has photos, this section finishes at page 132.

Bobby Womack BY BOB BOWMAN rom the early 1960s through the late 1980s, its first single, “Buffalo Bill,” for the deservedly obscure Bobby Womack was one of popular music’s Pennant label. Working the gospel highway alongside great triple threats, making stunning, if such groups as the Staple Singers, the Davis Sisters, and often underrecognized, contributions to the Pilgrim Travellers, Bobby developed as a guitarist the world of soul as a session musician, to the point that in 1957, a few months before his thir writer of hit songs for others, and as an artistteenth in his birthday, he was asked to go on the road as the own right. His often unorthodox but eminentlylead soulful guitarist with the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. guitar playing animated recordings by Hall of FamersThe Womack Brothers’ big break came in 1961, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Elviswhen Pres- Sam Cooke tapped them for his newly formed Fley, Dusty Springfield, Janis Joplin, and Sly and the SAR label. A compromise was reached: Their first single New Birth; and his own recordings, from 1971’s “That’s would be a gospel recording - if it was a hit, they would the Way I Feel About ’Cha” through 1985’s “I Wish He continue to record gospel music; if it flopped, Sam would Didn’t Trust Me So Much,” defined the essence of what cut them singing soul.

  • JIM FORD LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
JIM FORD LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik Jim Ford was born 23 rd August 1941 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, USA. His music is a blend of country, folk, funk and soul; Jim called himself ‘country funky’ – which is about right! He was found dead early in the evening of Sunday 18 th November 2007 in his trailer home by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s department . Only two albums were released during his lifetime: Harlan County (1969) and The Sounds Of Our Time (2007). In between he recorded numerous home demos as well as doing official recording sessions for Capitol and Paramount but none of the tracks laid down were ever issued at the time. In 2006, Swedish journalist L-P Anderson tracked Jim down and discovered a wealth of reel-to-reel tapes piled high on the floor of Jim’s trailer home. The Sounds Of Our Time (2007) contains Jim’s 1969 debut album, complemented with tracks from those reels. Plans were made to release more and even to record again but sadly Jim died before any of this could take place. However, several albums have been issued since, including the two albums Jim recorded in the early 1970s for Capitol and Paramount but were kept in the can. Below is a list of Jim Ford releases. • Harlan County (1969) • The Sounds Of Our Time (2007) • Point Of No Return (2008) • Big Mouth USA – The Unissued Paramount Album (2009) • The Unissued Capitol Album (2009) • Demolition Expert – Rare Acoustic Demos (2011) Included in our Lyric List are songs composed by Jim but recorded by other artists.
