Harmonies that result from the raised 6th scale degree (ascending form): (1) the raised 6th as the 3rd = IV (2) the raised 6th as the 5th = ii (3) the raised 6th as the root = viº Harmonies that result from the lowered 7th scale degree (descending form): (1) the lowered 7th as the 5th = III (this is not a variant) (2) the lowered 7th as the 3rd = v (used only with the descending form) In this case, v does not progress to I but to IV or vi. This is because v does not contain the leading tone. It therefore loses its dominant function. (3) the lowered 7th as the root = VII (used as dominant of III, often in a sequence). +III, an augmented triad, may be formed through use of the leading tone. However, this chord is best analyzed as a V with a NHT. Chords of the parallel minor key may be found in the major key. Ex.: iv iiº, bVI, bIII and i. When used in this manner these chords are are sometimes called color chords. Since all minor keys have a raised 6 and raised 7th scale degree but DO NOT have a raised 3rd scale degree, the only chord that may be borrowed from the major mode in a minor key is the I. This is called the picardy third and occurs at an Athentic Cadence. All borrowed chords progress in the manner of the diatonic chords they replace. The amount of harmonic change depends on the extent to which the borrowed chord differs from the chord it replaces. I-i, IV-iv, and ii-iiº only involve 1 chromatic alteration. vi-bVI and iii- bIII involve 2 chromatic alterations. iv - Borrowed iv is often in 1st inversion. The bass in iv-V moves by a major second. The bass in iv6-V moves by a minor second and intensifies the progression. iiº - Borrowed iiº appears in 1st inversion. i - Borrowed I usually takes over long passages and is USUALLY NOT an isolated chord. Used in this manner the analysis should show a change in mode rather than a series of borrowed chords. bVI - Borrowed bVI is used dramatically as a deceptive cadence. The 1/2 step intensifies the progression. bIII - Borrowed bIII occurs infrequently..

    “Chord Progressions – What to Expect in Popular Music” Ted Greene 1974-03-23 Major Keys: 1) Diatonic Chords The Diatonic chords of major keys are mixed up in various combination. Some patterns such as I-vi-ii-V, and I-iii-IV-V are so well-liked that they appear over and over again in many different forms. As you learn more songs, this will become clear. 2) Secondary Dominants and Sub-Dominants Any diatonic major or minor triad may be preceded with its own V(7) or ii(7)-V(7). Example: In C the diatonic chords are Dm, Em, F, G, Am, Bœ. Therefore, according to the above principle, in the key of C, you might expect to see: C – A7 – Dm, C – Em7 – A7 – Dm (m7¨5’s often replace m7’s, especially when the m7 is functioning as a ii of a minor chord; thus you might see: C – Em7¨5 – A7 – Dm) C – B7 – Em, C – F#m7¨5 – B7 – Em, C – C7 – F, C – Gm7 – C7 – F, C – D7 – G, C – Am7 – D7 – G, C – E7 – Am, C – Bm7¨5 – E7 – Am, (The V7’s of these triads are called Secondary Dominants; the ii7’s or iim7¨5’s are called Secondary Sub- Dominants. Note that the original sub-dominant in traditional harmony is the IV. In popular music, iim7 or iim7¨5 are more commonly used if the progression is of a more sophisticated nature). When using the secondary dominants and sub-dominants, you are actually temporarily jumping into a new key. For instance, when you play C-D7-G, the D7 chord is in the key of G but not the diatonic key of C.

The progressive and unique nature of his musical color may stem from the fundamentally different structure of tonality and harmony that underlies his pieces. This piece reflects a neoclassical preference for C major to the point of being called “white-key music.” This is apparent in the fact that C tonality is expanded and developed after it is established as the central tonality of this piece. Meanwhile, bitonality and polytonality, which frequently appear in this piece, destroy the traditional concept of tonality that relies upon ‘single tonality.’ By adding the principles of bitonality and polytonality to the classical beauty of form, Stravinsky succeeds in making a transition from the one-dimensional world of traditional music to a more multidimensional structure. In addition to tonality, new harmonic materials — retrograde (weak motion) that escapes from traditional harmonic motion, harmonies outside of tonality, poly-chords, chords that exclude the third, harmonies that undergo sudden transition, etc.— are boldly introduced. The end result is Stravinsky’s unique neoclassical sound that is firmly established in the history of music.
