State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, SS, M.Pd. Keywords: Literature, Value, Movie, Front of the Class. Nowadays, technology had become an important need of human being. Mostly, the technology are used include audiovisual technology and information media. Movie as a part of audiovisual technology has a power to provide significant influences in our life. It makes us will find out the knowledge and experience as well, without having to pass in a real life. Movie contains many values including moral, social, educational values, etc. That is why through inspiring movie, such as Front of the Class movie, audiences can get the value conveyed in the movie and apply them to get the better life. The formulation of research problems were: 1) What are the values found in the Front of the Class movie directed by Peter Werner? 2) To what extent do the values build up the total story of the movie? The purposes of this research were: 1) To know the values found in the Front of the Class movie directed by Peter Werner. 2) To elaborate the extent of the values build up the total story of the movie. Research Method: 1) The research design of this study was library research. 2) In this study the data were in the form of dialogues containing values presented by the characters of the Front of the Class movie. Meanwhile the data were taken from screenplay of the Front of the Class movie. 3) Since the design of this study belonged to library research, documentation method was used to collect the data. 4) In this study, the researcher applied theoritial triangulation to check the trustworthiness of the data analysis. 5) In this study, the data were analyzed through the following steps: watching the movie, transcriping the dialogues, reading the transcript, identifying the values found in the movie, grouping the values found into moral, social, and educational value, interpreting the values, and concluding all data found. The researcher found out several values in the Front of the Class movie. All values found could be classified into: 1) moral value which covered high self- confident, persistent, serious, wise and righteous, independent, patient, optimist and courageous, and also humble. 2) social value included caring and kind- hearted, protective, communicative, respectful, humorous, calm, helpful, friendly, open-minded, and also wise and encouraging. 3) educational value consisted of innovative, sincere, heart-whole and inspiring. Meanwhile for answering the second research question, the researcher found out that all values; moral, social, and educational value perfectly build up the total story of the movie. Through some dialogues, prologues, and epilog, the wisdom of life could be seen directly. In addition, the intrinsic elements included plot, setting, character, conflict, vii ix characterization, etc had role to build up the total story of the movie. Teknologi yang paling sering digunakan adalah teknologi audiovisual dan media informasi. Film sebagai salah satu bagian dari teknologi audiovisual memiliki kekuatan yang bisa memberikan pengaruh penting bagi kehidupan kita. Hal tersebut membuat kita mendapatkan ilmu pengetahuan dan pengalaman tanpa harus mengalaminya dalam kehidupan kita secara nyata. Dalam film terkandung banyak nilai termasuk nilai moral, nilai sosial, nilai pendidikan, dan sebagainya. Itulah mengapa melalui film yang inspiratif seperti Front of the Class, para penonton bisa mengetahui nilai yang disampaikan dalam film tersebut serta menerapkannya untuk mendapatkan kehidupan yang lebih baik. Karena proses inilah, kita akan menemukan pengatahuan dan pengalaman tanpa harus melewatinya dalam kehidupan kita secara nyata. Itulah mengapa melalui film yang sangat inspiratif manusia akan mendapatkan nilai yang terdapat dalam film tersebut dan menerepkannya untuk mendapatkan kehidupan yang lebih baik. Penjabaran dari masalah penelitian adalah: 1) Nilai apa saja yang ditemukan dalam film Front of the Class yang disutradarai oleh Peter Werner? 2) Sejauh mana nilai tersebut membangun keseluruhan jalan cerita? Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: 1) Untuk mengetahui nilai apa saja yang ditemukan dalam film Front of the Class yang disutradarai oleh Peter Werner. 2) Untuk mengelaborasi sejauh mana nilai-nilai tersebut membangun keseluruhan jalan cerita. Metode penelitian: 1) Desain penelitian ini menggunakan kajian pustaka. 2) Dalam penelitian ini, data yang digunakan berupa dialog yang mengandung nilai antar tokoh film Front of the Class. Dalam penelitian ini, data diambil dari naskah film Front of the Class. 3) Karena desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kajian pustaka, metode dokumentasi digunakan untuk pengumpulan data. 4) Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti mengaplikasikan teori trianggulasi untuk memeriksa tingkat kebenaran dalam analisis data. 5) Dalam penelitian ini, data dianalisis mengikuti beberapa langkah antara lain: menonton film, membuat transkrip percakapan, membaca transkrip, mengidentifikasi nilai yang terkandung dalam film, mengelompokkan nilai yang ditemukan ke dalam nilai moral, sosial, dan nilai pendidikan, menginterpretasi nilai, dan menyimpulkan semua data yang telah ditemukan. Peneliti menemukan banyak nilai yang terdapat dalam film Front of the Class. Nilai tersebut diklasifikasikan dalam: 1) nilai moral yang meliputi kepercayaan diri yang tinggi, tekun, serius, bijaksana dan berfikir positif, sabar, ix xi optimis dan berani, serta rendah hati. 2) nilai sosial yang terdiri dari sikap peduli dan baik hati, melindungi, komunikatif, mengahargai perbedaan, humoris, berperilaku baik dan pandai mengontrol diri, senang membantu, ramah, berfikiran terbuka, bijak dan menyemangati. 3) nilai pendidikan yang mencakup selalu berinovasi, tulus, mengajar menggunakan hati dan pendekatan personal, sertasangat

Cohen described his experiences growing up with the condition in his book, Front of the Class: How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had, co-authored with Lisa Wysocky. The book has been made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie titled Front of the Class.[ During his childhood, Cohen was accused of being a troublemaker in school and was punished by his teachers for the tics and noises caused by TS. He decided to "become the teacher that he never had". After he graduated and received his teaching certificate, 24 elementary schools rejected him before he was hired at Mountain View Elementary School in Cobb County, Georgia. The Portrayal of Tourette Syndrome in Film and Television Samantha Calder-Sprackman, Stephanie Sutherland, Asif Doja ABSTRACT: Objective: To determine the representation of Tourette Syndrome (TS) in fictional movies and television programs by investigating recurrent themes and depictions. Background: Television and film can be a source of information and misinformation about medical disorders. Tourette Syndrome has received attention in the popular media, but no studies have been done on the accuracy of the depiction of the disorder. Methods: International internet movie databases were searched using the terms “Tourette’s”, “Tourette’s Syndrome”, and “tics” to generate all movies, shorts, and television programs featuring a character or scene with TS or a person imitating TS. Using a grounded theory approach, we identified the types of characters, tics, and co-morbidities depicted as well as the overall representation of TS. Results: Thirty-seven television programs and films were reviewed dating from 1976 to 2010. Fictional movies and television shows gave overall misrepresentations of TS. Coprolalia was overrepresented as a tic manifestation, characters were depicted having autism spectrum disorder symptoms rather than TS, and physicians were portrayed as unsympathetic and only focusing on medical therapies. School and family relationships were frequently depicted as being negatively impacted by TS, leading to poor quality of life. Conclusions: Film and television are easily accessible resources for patients and the public that may influence their beliefs about TS. Physicians should be aware that TS is often inaccurately represented in television programs and film and acknowledge misrepresentations in order to counsel patients accordingly.

    Tourette Syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is complex and often misunderstood. This presentation will provide you with an introduction to Tourette Syndrome (TS) and to conditions that frequently occur with TS, such as Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Executive Dysfunction, and other learning disabilities. This presentation is intended for school-based professionals who may be working with students who have TS. The Association recommends that school psychologists, nurses, special education directors, and other training staff use this as a tool to educate their faculty and staff. 1 This slide is included as a reminder of how critically important teachers’ responses are to all children. We all have days that are more difficult to get through than others, but it is so important to always recognize the power teachers hold regarding a student’s academic education, as well as his or her social abilities and self-worth. The teacher is a role model for the entire class. His or her actions will often have a bigger impact than words. Demonstrating a positive attitude verbally as well as non-verbally is critically important. Jeans, 2016 ii Abstract Tourette Syndrome Plus (TS+) is a “neuropsychiatric or brain-based condition that causes people who have it to make involuntary sounds or movements called tics” (Tourette Canada, n. d., para. 1). Individuals with TS+ may also have a number of associated disorders such as OCD, ADHD, and Anxiety Disorder. Community-based research and popular theatre activities were used in this research to explore social and educational issues that may arise for youth with TS+ aged 14-15. The topic of TS+ is viewed through social models of disability and utilizes a transformative worldview. This research explores the role of theatre in building self-advocacy skills, increasing self-confidence, and/or improving upon socialization skills for youth with TS+. Youth with TS+ participated in weekly theatre sessions to create a script that demonstrated their experiences with TS+. This script was performed to an audience of TS+ community members, as well as members of the University of Alberta community. The collaboratively created script, titled “Ditched,” follows the character of Thomas as he engages with the notions of bullying, popularity, and exclusion. This research found that youth with TS+ may carry with them internalized loneliness, guilt, and/or shame for having TS+. These internalized feelings may manifest in youths’ withdrawal from social situations, and may also impact youths’ self-confidence and their ability to self-advocate.

    AMERICAN CULTURAL VALUES AS REFLECTED IN THE CHARACTER OF BRAD COHEN IN PETER WERNER’S MOVIE FRONT OF THE CLASS Karomah Widianingsih (NIM. 13020112120003) Sukarni Suryaningsih (NIP. 197212231998022001) ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF HUMANITIES DIPONEGORO UNIVERSITY SEMARANG 2016 ABSTRACT This study focuses on American cultural values reflected by Brad Cohen in Front of the Class Peter Werner’s movie. Front of the Class movie describes some reflections of American cultural values depicted by the main character named Brad Cohen. The aims of this study are to describe the intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of the movie. The writer employs library research to support the data analysis derived from some references such as some related books, journals, articles, and encyclopedias. To analyze the intrinsic aspects, the writer uses some theories of narrative elements and cinematographic elements. To analyze the extrinsic aspects, the writer applies theory of personal and cultural values by Roy D’Andrade. Furthermore, the writer also involves some aspects of cultural values from Shalom H Schwartz’s theory. The result of this study shows that, based on Roy D’Andrade’s theory, the main character of the movie, Brad Cohen has applied individualism, altruism, and industry value aspects. In addition, the writer finds some similar American cultural values items of Roy D’Andrade’s theory and Shalom H. Schwartz’s theory. Those items are choosing my own goal, being creative, treating people equally, being honest, enjoying life, and pursuing knowledge.
