Five Things You Might Not Know Are on the Doorstep in W1 and SW1 September 2, 2014, London at Park Lane, England Down Street Station Walk just metres from Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane to Down Street and you will be standing above part of one of the most important sites in modern history. Underneath you is the disused Down Street Underground station that served as part of Sir Winston Churchill’s nerve centre during World War II. Wellington Statue By walking in to the centre of the roundabout at Hyde Park Corner, you come across multiple war memorials, the largest of which is Wellington Arch, which was built in 1825-7 to celebrate the Duke of Wellington's defeat of Napoleon. If you look at the top of the arch you’ll see the largest bronze sculpture in Europe - the Angel of Peace descending on the Quadriga, or four-horsed war chariot. The Duke’s Horse Another statue in that area is one of Copenhagen, the Duke’s horse, who was the grandson of fabled racehorse Eclipse, from whom it is said 95 percent of modern thoroughbred horses trace their pedigree. Although Copenhagen wasn’t particularly successful racehorse, winning only once, like Napoloeon’s Marengo he was known as a great war horse and was even given a full military funeral. Speakers’ Corner 1 By heading along Park Lane to Marble Arch you will pass Speakers’ Corner, a spot of Hyde Park where some of the great thinkers and speakers of modern history have shared their ideas and opinions. A place for people to exercise their right to free speech, previous speakers have included Karl Marx, George Orwell and Vladimir Lenin. The Punchbowl Pub Five minutes away from the hotel is a 300-year old pub called the Punchbowl, which as well as being a popular after work drinks venue for Mayfair workers, was previously owned by film director Guy Ritchie. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.

Fire” The long lines of muskets crashed, three hundred Frenchmen fell at the first volley, and with waiting to fire again the Guards drove off Napoleon's ‘Immortals‘ with the bayonet, while Colborne’s 52nd leaping out of the high corn attacked another column of Chasseurs in the flank. “Well done, Colborne! Go on! They won’t stand!” It was the Duke un-expectantly appearing at Colborne’s side. Lord Ux- bridge had urged him in vain to take up a less exposed position. “So I will,” he replied, “when I see those fellow driven off.” Now he was seeing it. The French regiments saw it also and a cry of incredulous horror flew along their line-”La Garde recule!” The Duke sensed that his was the instant of decision. He galloped over to his tree. Reining in Copenhagen, his favourite chestnut charger, he stood with his telescope to his eye into the light of the setting sun—setting on Napoléon's empire. Then he took off his hat and waved it towards the French. In a flash the signal was understood and with thunderous cheer his Army led by the light cavalry, swooped on to the plain.

Copenhagen! The Iron Duke! Immediately most of us identify with one of our greatest soldiers. Arthur (1769-1852) the Anglo-Irish First Duke of Wellington had a grand, aristocratic and impressive pedigree, with a mixture of Wellesley, Cecil, Pakenham-Longford and Mornington blood, etc. The Iron Duke was clever but professionally aloof and called his soldiers 'The scum of the earth....' Meanwhile his compatriot, Admiral Lord Nelson, 10 years older, inspired 'adoration' from his men. Wellington sounds like a nice chap, a family man, who eventually made Stratfield Saye House a comfortable home for his children and grandchildren with his horses, farms and hunting grounds. And only 40 miles and 4 hours' travelling by horse from London. The Great Duke distinguished himself as a Commander in India and the Peninsular War (1808-14 in Spain & Portugal) but it's for the Battle of Waterloo (1815) that he's lionised.

My name is Copenhagen because I am out of Lady Catherine who was in foal with me at the Battle of Copenhagen, which is ironic because I am not a warhorse but you are. I am dark brown and I am by John Bull, out of a mare by the Rutland Arabian, and also by Meteor, who was the son of the mighty Eclipse. You are an Arabian too, aren't you? Maybe we are distant cousins even! That doesn't matter for horses of course.

Santa Barbara, a town of 90,000, sits on a narrow spit of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains on California’s Central Coast. It’s just far enough from Los Angeles to make frequent trips to Southern California’s megalopolis impracticable, and its vineyards, beaches, and sky-high real estate prices have earned the city its reputation as the American Riviera. Nothing about the place, in other words, suggested graduate school life. But when I arrived on campus in 2011, I encountered an extraordinary community. For better or worse, during my first years of course work the history department graduate student offices served as a social nexus. Any time day or night at least one of the following people could be found there, either working hard or looking to be distracted.

Mair. The purpose of the series is to make available to specialists and the interested public the results of research that, because of its unconventional or controversial nature, might otherwise go unpublished. The editor actively encourages younger, not yet well established, scholars and independent authors to submit manuscripts for consideration. Contributions in any of the major scholarly languages of the world, including Romanized Modern Standard Mandarin (MSM) and Japanese, are acceptable. In special circumstances, papers written in one of the Sinitic topolects (fangyan) may be considered for publication. Although the chief focus of Sino-Platonic Papers is on the intercultural relations of China with other peoples, challenging and creative studies on a wide variety of philological subjects will be entertained. A Message from the Chairman Since our last Newsletter in Spring 2005 we have had an extremely busy programme. Our visits to Stratfield Saye and the Wellington Museum, our annual lecture, this year given by Oliver Fairclough on French porcelain in the National Museums and Galleries in Wales, and of course our Symposium on Sèvres porcelain in honour of Sir Geoffrey de Bellaigue have all been extremely well-received. The Symposium marked the forthcoming publication of the Sèvres and other French porcelain in the Royal Collection and we were honoured to hear a paper on Quintin Craufurd based on new research in connection with the catalogue. This was only one of many enthralling vistas opened up by our speakers who generously shared their knowledge and love of their subject with us. The Symposium attracted well over one hundred delegates and was truly international in scope. Our thanks go to Errol Manners for his impeccable organisation of the scholarly programme and to Deborah Gage and to Kate Henson for all their hard work in making possible our superb royal visits reported in the Newsletter. Thanks are also due to the steering committee whose members assisted with the planning and gave much practical help. We hope to issue Proceedings of the Symposium late in 2006 as a permanent record of much new research into Sèvres porcelain. We are looking forward to even more activities in 2006 with our series of evening lectures to be held in London in early 2006. The Duke of Wellington His House and His Horse
The Duke of Wellington his House and His Horse A presentation to the Wokingham Society by Mr. Andrew Powell in the Town Hall on Wednesday March 18th 2015 Mr. Andrew Powell, a guide at Stratfield Saye House, the historic home of the Dukes of Wellington, entertained a large audience with an informative and detailed account of the 1st Duke’s country estate and his famous horse Copenhagen. He illustrated his talk with photographs of portraits, paintings and precious historical artifacts in the House, many of which were acquired by the Great Duke himself. He explained how the Duke bought Stratfield Saye estate from George Pitt, the first Baron Rivers, with money given him by a grateful nation after his successes against Napoleon in the Peninsular War and the Battle of Waterloo. He had intended to build a magnificent country house to be called Waterloo Palace, but, for personal and financial reasons he hid not carry out his plan and Stratfield Saye House was saved from demolition. The Duke added a number of features to the original Jacobean/Carolingian house and used it as his country retreat where he could enjoy country pursuits, not least fox-hunting, a sport he enjoyed into his old age. He had been presented with many gifts by many European heads of state in gratitude for the defeat of Napoleon, amongst them a magnificent malachite vase from Tsar Nicholas of Russia. Many of the gifts are displayed in the house together with furniture he had bought from the sale of goods and chattels by impoverished French aristocrats.
