WINE Our namesake, Coda di Volpe, comes from a grape only found in Southern Italy. Pulled from near extinction, it is one that expresses the true landscape & vineyards of Campania. Meaning “Tail of the Fox,” Coda di Volpe has influenced our entire wine program. Some of the most dynamic wines in the world are being made & bottled from the six traditional regions of Southern Italy; Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria, Sicily & Sardinia. Just as our namesake shows us a glimpse of the past, so do the other ancient varietals we have gathered on our list. By supporting small producers & native species, we strive to represent the vibrancy of Southern Italy’s present & future. • THE PLEASURES of WESTERN SICILY TOUR We Are Delighted To
SECRET ITALIA TOURS Unique Small group tours since 2008 THE PLEASURES OF WESTERN SICILY TOUR We are delighted to feature a unique small group tours to discover the spicy Western Sicily : The Pleasures of Western Sicily. Sicily may be Italian, but the islanders are Latin only by adoption. The greatest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily was for centuries the centre of the known world. Its geographic position made it vulnerable to attacks by foreigners, but also a meeting place of civilisations, a bridge between East and West. Sicily is an island with a unique identity and rich historical past. A melting pot of different cultures, traditions and architectural styles as well as beautiful landscapes and a coastline, which is home to some of Italy’s most stunning beaches. The most African of the island’s landscapes, the North West saw a cultural melting pot of Phoenicians, Greeks and Arabs settling in Sicily. Their stamp remains. Incontestably some of the island’s most charismatic ancient sites are also to be found in the West, the Greek temple and theater in Segesta, surrounded by rolling meadowland and the Phoenecian site on the island of Mozia, just off Marsala. Selinunte’s Doric columns are special too, as is the Phoenician ruin of Solunto, perched on the slopes of Montecatalfano. But be prepared for contrast. From the vibrant port town of Trapani you can take a boat across to Sicily’s captivating Egadi islands or a cable car which whisks you up into the medieval walled town of Erice where you can almost feel that you have been transported to Tuscany.

  • Warships of the First Punic War: an Archaeological Investigation
WARSHIPS OF THE FIRST PUNIC WAR: AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION AND CONTRIBUTORY RECONSTRUCTION OF THE EGADI 10 WARSHIP FROM THE BATTLE OF THE EGADI ISLANDS (241 B.C.) by Mateusz Polakowski April, 2016 Director of Thesis: Dr. David J. Stewart Major Department: Program in Maritime Studies of the Department of History Oared warships dominated the Mediterranean from the Bronze Age down to the development of cannon. Purpose-built warships were specifically designed to withstand the stresses of ramming tactics and high intensity impacts. Propelled by the oars of skilled rowing crews, squadrons of these ships could work in unison to outmaneuver and attack enemy ships. In 241 B.C. off the northwestern coast of Sicily, a Roman fleet of fast ramming warships intercepted a Carthaginian warship convoy attempting to relieve Hamilcar Barca’s besieged troops atop Mount Eryx (modern day Erice). The ensuing naval battle led to the ultimate defeat of the Carthaginian forces and an end to the First Punic War (264–241 B.C.). Over the course of the past 12 years, the Egadi Islands Archaeological Site has been under investigation producing new insights into the warships that once patrolled the wine dark sea. The ongoing archaeological investigation has located Carthaginian helmets, hundreds of amphora, and 11 rams that sank during the course of the battle. This research uses the recovered Egadi 10 ram to attempt a conjectural reconstruction of a warship that took part in the battle. It analyzes historical accounts of naval engagements during the First Punic War in order to produce a narrative of warship innovation throughout the course of the war.

  • Verticillium Wilt of Olive by Paul Vossen, Doug Gubler, and Miguel Angel Blanco
Verticillium Wilt of Olive By Paul Vossen, Doug Gubler, and Miguel Angel Blanco Verticillium wilt symptoms on a large tree Verticillium wilt is a soil-borne fungus disease caused by the organism (Verticillium dahliae). It is one of the most serious diseases of olive trees worldwide because it can kill trees and is difficult or impossible to control. The presence of high levels of certain strains of Verticillium in soil effectively renders the land unusable for olive growing. Over 30 years ago we had entire table olive orchards in California that were destroyed from this disease. We have recently observed, in a few new orchards in California, that some trees have been positively identified as having Verticillium, so this disease must be taken seriously. SYMPTOMS Symptoms appear as wilting, leaf rolling, chlorosis, defoliation, and dead brown leaves remaining attached to the branches. On large trees, one or more branches suddenly wilt early in the growing season. Disease generally becomes worse as the season progresses. Yield from infected trees is poor and after several years eventually die. On very young trees, the whole tree begins to look pale and stops growing. The leaves wilt and the tree dies. Darkening of xylem tissue does not occur in olive wood as it does in other species. The most common symptom on all Verticillium infected trees is chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves) followed by defoliation. In some cases, very susceptible cultivars defoliate without leaf chlorosis. Sudden wilt, leaf rolling, and chlorosis is sometimes observed at the same time. DISEASE DIAGNOSIS Verticillium wilt Beyond symptoms, positive identification of the presence of fungus growing on an agar plate Verticillium is typically done by placing thin pieces of infected vascular tissue onto specific types of agar culture medium.

  • Tour Sicily & Malta
Tour Sicily & Malta 8 days / 7 nights From March to November departures every Tuesday Day 1 - Tuesday: PALERMO (hotel in Palermo) Arrive independently to the hotel in the charming city of Palermo (optional private transfer on request). In the evening you will meet our tour-leader and your travel companions and enjoy a welcome dinner. Overnight in hotel. Day 2 - Wednesday: MONREALE - PALERMO (hotel in Palermo) After breakfast in hotel, the morning will be spent visiting Monreale, its huge Norman Cathedral, proclaimed the Eighth Wonder of the World, and its splendid Cloister in Arab-Norman style: admirable masterpiece of art, sculpture, and semi-precious stones marquetry! Later we will discover the stunning Palermo , one of the richest towns in the Island for its history and art. Palermo stands on a bay at the foot of Mt Pellegrino, a headland described by Goethe as the loveliest he had ever seen. While the Baroque predominates, there is a profusion of different architectural styles reflecting the city’s multicultural past: Punic walls, Art Nouveau villas, noble residences, XVIIth century squares, including an elegant opera house. We will visit the wonderful Arab-Norman Cathedral, the astonishing Martorana Church and the amazing Cappella Palatina , mirable example from an historical and an artistic point of view, of how different cultures, religions and way of thinking apparently incompatible can coexist. Ruggero II in fact employed both Bizantyne, Muslim and Latin workers. Along the visiting day, we will have a stop for a food surprise in a local bakery. Free time for lunch. Continuing our walk we will admire the Teatro Massimo and the debated fountain in Pretoria Square, situated in the ancient Kalsa area and adorned with XVI century sculptures.
