Your Sadness, My Sorrow: Negative Emotion Concordance within Married Couples in China Wanru Xiong Office of Population Research Princeton University Abstract: This paper finds significant evidence for negative emotion concordance within married couples age 45 and above in China using CHARLS data. To understand the mechanism of such concordance and test the hypothesis of emotional contagion effect, I applied instrument variable method, structure equation model and fixed effect model in this dyadic relation context. The results confirm the effect of spouse’s negative emotion on the respondent’s and support the emotional contagion effect hypothesis. In general, wives tend to be more sensitive to the emotional condition of their husband. Keywords: dyadic relation; negative emotion; concordance; emotional contagion effect 1. Introduction “I will laugh with you and cry with you ... in sickness and in health, till death do us apart.” Couples mean it when they take their wedding vows. There is evidence of health concordance within married couples, which means couples’ health conditions, both physical and mental, tend to converge after marriage (Meyler, Stimpson and Peek, 2007). This phenomenon of health concordance within couples is drawing increasing research interests. Published findings of physical health concordance within couples include concordance in blood pressure (Beresford, 1976; Speers et al., 1986; Peek and Markides, 2003; Stimpson and Peek, 2005), chronic conditions (Cheraskin et al., 1968; Bookwala and Schulz, 1996; Ubeda, 1998; Stimpson and Peek, 2005) and obesity (Inoue et al., 1996; Knuiman et al., 1996). Among the growing number of papers on health concordance within couples, studies on depressive symptoms and distress are the most prevalent (Meyler, Stimpson and Peek, 2007). -

POS focuses specifically on what is positive, flourishing, and life-giving in organizations, and how to cultivate individual and organizational performance. In this article I will discuss the humanistic approach of Carl Rogers and how it can contribute to POS. Rogers is well known for his work on human relations and like POS he was concerned with the promotion of human flourishing. However, unlike POS, Rogers’ approach was based on a distinctive view of human nature and non-directive practice. By comparison, it looks like POS talks the language of human flourishing while offering ways in which to control and direct people as part of the neoliberal hegemony that humanistic scholars might see as the problem. I would like to advocate for a humanistic POS; one which explicitly has the aim of liberation and empowerment. -

PART 1 - PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT CHAPTER 1: PERSONALITY Personality is the sum total of ways in which an individual reacts and interacts with others. Or Personality is generally defined as the deeply ingrained and relatively enduring patterns of thought, feeling and behavior. In fact, when one refers to personality, it generally implies to all what is unique about an individual, the characteristics that makes one stand out in a crowd. Personalities is the sum total of individual’s Psychological traits, characteristics, motives, habits, attitudes, beliefs and outlooks. Personality determinants: Heredity : Heredity refers to those factors that were determined at conception. Physical structure, facial attractiveness, gender, temperament, muscle composition and reflexes, energy level, and biological rhythms are characteristics that are generally considered to be either completely or substantially influenced by who your parents were, that is by their biological, physiological and inherent psychological makeup. Environment : The environmental factors that exert pressures on our personality formation are the culture in which we are raised, our early conditioning, the norms among our family, friends and social groups, and other influences that we experience. The environment to which we are exposed plays a substantial role in shaping our personalities. Situation : A third factor, the situation, influences the effects of heredity and environment on personality. An individual’s personality although generally stable and consistent, does change in different situations. The varying demand of different situation calls forth different aspects of one’s personality. We should not therefore look upon personality patterns in isolation. Self Awareness: Self Awareness knows your motivations; preferences, personality and understanding how these factors influence your judgment, decisions and interactions with other people. -

About Emotions There are 8 primary emotions. You are born with these emotions wired into your brain. That wiring causes your body to react in certain ways and for you to have certain urges when the emotion arises. Here is a list of primary emotions: Eight Primary Emotions Anger: fury, outrage, wrath, irritability, hostility, resentment and violence. Sadness: grief, sorrow, gloom, melancholy, despair, loneliness, and depression. Fear: anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, dread, fright, and panic. Joy: enjoyment, happiness, relief, bliss, delight, pride, thrill, and ecstasy. Interest: acceptance, friendliness, trust, kindness, affection, love, and devotion. Surprise: shock, astonishment, amazement, astound, and wonder. Disgust: contempt, disdain, scorn, aversion, distaste, and revulsion. Shame: guilt, embarrassment, chagrin, remorse, regret, and contrition. All other emotions are made up by combining these basic 8 emotions. Sometimes we have secondary emotions, an emotional reaction to an emotion. We learn these. Some examples of these are: o Feeling shame when you get angry. o Feeling angry when you have a shame response (e.g., hurt feelings). o Feeling fear when you get angry (maybe you’ve been punished for anger). There are many more. These are NOT wired into our bodies and brains, but are learned from our families, our culture, and others. When you have a secondary emotion, the key is to figure out what the primary emotion, the feeling at the root of your reaction is, so that you can take an action that is most helpful. . -

THESIS PERSONAL GROWTH INITIATIVE AND CALLING: INTRINSIC MOTIVATION AT WORK Submitted by John Jurica Department of Psychology In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Science Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2014 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Bryan Dik Susan Anderson Gwynith Fisher Copyright by John Jurica 2014 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT PERSONAL GROWTH INITIATIVE AND CALLING: INTRINSIC MOTIVATION AT WORK This study examined relationships between personal growth initiative, which is a desire to actively engage in conscious self-improvement, and the vocational construct of calling, which is defined as a sense of meaning derived from work that is pro-social and emanates from a transcendent summons. The study also examined how personal growth initiative and calling variables were related to positive well-being variables and career development variables. The participants (N = 297) were undergraduate students enrolled in a psychology course at a large public university in the western United States. The results suggested that personal growth initiative can be incorporated into the prevailing model of calling in multiple ways. First, evidence suggested that it may function as a predictor of presence of calling. Second, personal growth initiative may function as a moderator between presence of calling and living a calling. Finally, there was evidence that personal growth initiative may be a mediator between presence of calling and positive criterion variables, including life satisfaction and work hope. The results also suggested that living a calling may not be an important goal for college students, which provides evidence for the possibility that a sense of calling has different effects for individuals in different stages of career development. -

Levels of Homophobia Negative Positive Repulsion Pity Tolerance Acceptance Support Admiration Appreciation Nurturance Negative Levels: Repulsion: Homosexuality is seen as “a crime against nature.” Homosexual people are sick, crazy, sinful, immoral, wicket, etc. Anything is justified to change them, it: prison, hospitalization, from behavior therapy to shock treatment. Pity: Heterosexual chauvinism. Heterosexuality is more mature and certainly to be preferred. Any possibility of being straight should be reinforced and those who seem to be “born that way” should be pitied. Tolerance: Homosexuality is just a phase of adolescent development that many people go through and ‘grow out of’. Thus lesbians, gays and bisexuals are less mature than heterosexual people and should not be put in positions of authority because they are still working on adolescent behaviors. Acceptance: Still implies that there is something that must be accepted. Characterized by such statements as ‘you’re not gay to me, you’re just a person’. Denies the social and legal realities, while ignoring the pain of invisibility and the stress of closeted behavior. Positive Levels: Support: Work to safeguard the rights of LGBT people. May be uncomfortable themselves, but are aware of the social climate and irrational unfairness. Admiration: Acknowledges that being LGBT in our society takes strength. Such people are willing to truly look at themselves and work on their own homophobic attitudes. Appreciation: Values the diversity of people and sees LGBT people as a valid part of diversity. These people are willing to combat homophobia in themselves and others. Nurturance: Assumes that LGBT people are indispensable to society. They view all homosexual people with genuine affection and delight and are willing to be open and public advocates. -
