As a soil scientist in the Soil Conservation Service, David Gardner had seen the soil survey from the inside while working in scientific and technical positions as well as in administrative ones. Dr. Gardner brought these skills to his historical research and writing on the soil survey program. David Gardner’s doctoral thesis has not been generally available to soil scientists. A few soil scientists in the Service read one of the photographic copies purchased from Harvard University by the Soil Survey Division, but soil scientists in field offices had little access to these scant copies. The purpose of this reprint edition is to make the study available to several audiences. Soil scientists in the Natural Resources Conservation Service will have a better understanding of their heritage through reading it. Since knowl- edge of historical developments can benefit practitioners in their jobs, this edition will be provided to soil scientists in the agency, to cooperators in the soil survey program, and to government depository libraries. The author and Harvard University have permitted the Natural Resources Conserva- tion Service to reprint the volume and to distribute it. This version is not a photographic copy of the original. It has been retyped, and the format and pagination have been altered to create a more compact volume. In a few cases capitalization and punctuation have been standardized. During recent decades this development has been particularly accelerated. Whether or not the impact of science is considered in terms of the popular contemporary symbolic form of the mushroom cloud, the progress of modern science is an awesome thing. Very few Americans have ever seen a mushroom cloud, or wish to. The lives of every- one, however (with the possible exception of certain American Indians of the Southwest who may, indeed, be quite familiar with mushroom clouds), have been profoundly affected by scientific progress. This has come about primarily through the technological application of the principles of fundamental science to the solution of the practical problems of essen- tial human activities. Among

McKenna, Illinois Department of Agriculture Elements of Soil Erosion Soil erosion by water is the detachment of soil particles by the direct action of raindrops and runoff water, and the transport of these particles by splash and very shallow flowing water to small channels or rills. Detachment of soil particles also occurs in these rills due to the force exerted by the flowing water. When rills join together and form larger channels, they may become gullies. These gullies can be either temporary (ephemeral) or permanent (classical). Non-erodible channels might be grassed waterways, or designed channels that limit flow conditions so that channel erosion does not occur. Gross erosion includes sheet, rill, gully and channel erosion, and is the first step in the process of sediment delivery. Because much eroded sediment is deposited in or near the field of origin, only a fraction of the total eroded soil from an area contributes to sediment yield from a watershed. Sediment delivery is affected by a number of factors including soil properties, proximity to the stream, man made structures-including sediment basins, fences, and culverts, channel density, basin characteristics, land use/land cover, and rainfall-runoff factors. Coarse- textured sediment and sediment from sheet and rill erosion are less likely to reach a stream than fine-grained sediment or sediment from channel erosion. In general, the larger the area, the lower the ratio of sediment yield at the watershed outlet or point of interest to gross erosion in the entire watershed, defined as the sediment delivery ratio (SDR).

    Appendix D Soil Series Descriptions Soil Series Descriptions Soil Orders Mollisols — This order covers a considerable land area of western and southern Minnesota and is the basis for the state's productive agricultural base. The formative syllable, oll, is derived from the Latin word mollis, or soft. Its most distinguishing feature is a thick, dark-colored surface layer that is high in nutrients. It occurs throughout the former prairie areas of Minnesota. The Latin term for soft in its name is descriptive in that most of these soils usually have a rather loose, low-density surface. Three suborders of mollisols occur in Minnesota: Aquolls, Udolls, and Ustolls. Alfisols — This order covers a large land area in Minnesota, part of which is now cultivated and part forested. Alf is the formative element and is coined from a soil term, pedalfer. Pedalfers were identified in the 1930s as soils of the eastern part of the United States with an accumulation of aluminum and iron. The alf refers to the chemical symbols for aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe). Alfisols are primarily fertile soils of the forest, formed in loamy or clayey material. The surface layer of soil, usually light gray or brown, has less clay in it than does the subsoil. These soils are usually moist during the summer, although they may dry during occasional droughts. Two suborders of alfisols occur in Minnesota: Aqualfs and Udalfs. Histosols — The formative element in the name is ist and comes from the Greek word histos, which means tissue. This is an appropriate association because these soils are formed from plant remains in wet environments like marshes and bogs.

    SITE - SPECIFIC CHARACTERIZATION, MODELING AND SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF SUB-SOIL COMPACTION (HARDPAN) FOR PRECISION AGRICULTURE ON SOUTHEASTERN US SOILS by MEHARI ZEWDE TEKESTE (Under the Direction of Randy L. Raper and Ernest W. Tollner) ABSTRACT Natural and machinery traffic-induced subsoil compacted layers (soil hardpans) that are found in many southeastern US soils limit root growth with detrimental effects on crop productivity and the environment. Due to the spatial variability of hardpans, tillage management systems that use site-specific depth tillage applications may reduce fuel consumption compared to the conventional uniform depth tillage. The success of site-specific tillage or variable depth tillage depends on an accurate sensing of the hardpan layers, field positioning, and controlling the application of real-time or prescribed tillage. The over arching objective of the work was to understand and advance the art and science of soil compaction analysis and prediction with an eye towards compaction management in precision farming. The specific objectives were (1) To investigate the influences of soil parameters (soil moisture and bulk density), and the soil-cone frictional property on the interpretations of cone penetrometer data in predicting the magnitude and depth of hardpans, (2) To determine spatial variability for creating hardpan maps and (3) To investigate a passive acoustic based real-time soil compaction sensing method. The soil cone penetration problems were also modeled using finite element modeling to investigate the soil deformation patterns and evaluate the capability of the finite element method to predict the magnitude and depth of the hardpan. Laboratory experiments in a soil column study indicated that the soil cone penetration resistances were affected by soil moisture, bulk density and cone material type.

HOW TO IMPROVE SOIL DRAINAGE Charlotte Germane, Nevada County Master Gardener From The Curious Gardener, Summer 2011 Do you suspect you might have a drainage problem in your garden? If your soil does not drain quickly enough, your plants will drown. Soils in the foothills Your soil drainage may not be as bad as you think it is. There’s so much talk in the foothills about clay soil that some gardeners assume they have poorly draining soil, and grumble about it, when they actually have pretty respectable loam. The USDA has mapped soil types and found that in the lower foothills the soil can be sandy loam over heavy sandy loam, or loam over clay loam. Above 2000 feet, it is typically loam over clay loam with cobblestones. An unusual feature of foothills soil is the serpentine outcropping. This combines poor drainage with toxic levels of magnesium. If you need to grow in a serpentine soil area, use raised beds. The serpentine soil under the beds will not provide adequate drainage. Another foothill soil issue that makes for poor drainage is “layered soil”. Soil naturally transitions from one kind to another, but layered soil means soil that changes abruptly, making it hard for water to move through easily. Layered soil occurs naturally (soil on top of rock or a clay pan) and can also be created by digging with rototillers and heavy equipment. Check for poor grading, over-irrigation, and thatched lawns Before you label your soil the culprit, walk your garden and evaluate the grading. It is possible that at the time of your home’s construction, or during a later landscaping project,the soil was graded so the water drained toward an area with no easy outlet.

The concept includes two areas of emphasis—education and assessment—both based soundly on principles of soil science. Soil quality test kits, farmer-based scorecards, visual assessment procedures, fact sheets, and video presentations were developed as educational materials because many people have no basis to recognize, understand or appreciate the complexity of soil resources. Assessment tools for indexing soil quality at various scales were pursued to show the multiple functions (e.g. nutrient and water cycling, filtering and buffering of contaminants, decomposition of crop residues and other organic matter sources, and recycling of essential plant nutrients) that soils provide as the foundation for sustainable land management. Worldwide research and technology transfer efforts have increased awareness that soil resources have both inherent characteristics determined by their basic soil formation factors and dynamic characteristics influenced by human decisions and management practices. Soil quality assessment and education are intended to provide a better understanding and awareness that soil resources are truly living bodies with biological, chemical, and physical properties and processes performing essential ecosystem services.

A feld experiment was conducted to study the efect of tillage [conventional (CT), reduced (RT), and zero (ZT)], rice straw mulch and defcit saline‑water irrigation in wheat (100, 80 and 60% of wheat water requirement, CWR) followed by rainfed sorghum on soil properties and the yields of the cropping system. Yields of both the crops were comparable between RT and CT, but the wheat yield was reduced in ZT. The RT, mulching and defcit saline irrigation in wheat season (60% CWR) increased the sorghum fodder yield. Olsen’s P (8.7–20.6%) and NH4OAc‑K (2.5–7.5%) increased in RT and ZT, respectively, over CT under both the crops. Defcit −1 irrigation reduced soil salinity (ECe) by 0.73–1.19 dS ­m after each crop cycle, while soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN), dehydrogenase, urease and alkaline phosphatase reduced with an increase in ECe. The α‑glucosidase, MBC, ECe, KMnO4oxidizable N, and urease were identifed as major contributors in developing the soil health index.
