Nation to make it happen. Chief among my goals are to initiate a record number of law, pre-law and alumni members this year. In particular, I have set 6,000 as the goal for law school initiates this upcoming academic year, a number which has never been achieved in one year. In targeting that goal, I have set some goals within each District which I will be sharing and discussing with the District Justices and the Executive Office. Most significantly, however, I need the delegates to our Convention to return home with the same passion and dedication to P.A.D. that they demonstrated over our 4-day meeting in Arizona. That emotion and drive will take us to new heights this year, but it won’t be easy. We need to motivate and mobilize the membership, a phrase that I hope to not only repeat often during my tenure as your IJ, but put into action. I am reaching back in my P.A.D. history to friends who have been less active in recent years and challenging them to join me in making this a year for the ages. 4 The Reporter — Summer 2012 Clerk’s Corner By Kathleen “Kitty” Maloney (Kennedy), International Secretary The reins of the Clerk’s Corner have been passed from Stephen King to me as a result of my election to the position of International Secretary (I have big shoes to fill!). A huge “Thank you” to the attendees of the 59th Biennial Convention—you made it one of the best Conventions I have attended in the 16 years I have been a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International. On the Sunday after Convention, the newly-elected International Executive Board convenes for a day-long meeting. New and reelected board members pick up where the previous board left off, and the learning curve can be steep. One thing is certain, it is a fast transition. During lunch on that Sunday, I sat across from Stephen as he outlined the role of International Secretary. This overview, although quick, truly helped me assimilate into my new role. Most importantly he said, “do not hesitate to ask questions of me!” Those eight little words meant a lot. We all need help sometime, even when we think we understand what is expected of us. I am lucky. I have two past International Secretaries serving on the board with me who I can turn to for guidance when needed. What may seem like a short, casual lunchtime conversation, was really a brief but important transition discussion between officers. Did your Chapter have an Officer’s Transition meeting last spring? While spring is traditionally the time for such meetings, there are times that they just do not happen. So if your answer to the question above is: “No,” do not worry! It is not the end of the world! As the fall semester is just beginning, there is still time to sit down with the officers from the previous year’s executive board to discuss your Chapter, the roles and responsibilities of the officers and events or processes that are unique to each individual school and Chapter. This will help get the new Chapter officers off to a good running start and provide a good foundation for planning out the Chapter calendar for the semester. What if you cannot get in touch with the past officers or the scheduling of a meeting is impossible? This is where an Alumni Advisor, Faculty Advisor, District Justice, Assistant District Justice, local alumni and the Executive Office can be very helpful. All mentioned are valuable resources to a Chapter, and the officers and members should not hesitate to ask questions or ask for guidance. Another valuable resource for Chapter officers and members is the District Conference. Throughout September and October, each District in the Fraternity holds a District Conference. Typically these conferences are one day (usually a Saturday) and provide student and alumni attendees with a wealth of information that can be brought back and applied at the Chapter level. Topics covered typically include: Chapter Operations, Programming, Membership Recruitment and Retention, Alumni Relations and often special topics that are specific to the District. While District Conferences are mandatory for Chapter officers, I encourage all members to attend one this fall. For it is at these conferences that the seeds of fraternalism are cultivated. I, like the rest of the International Executive Board members, will be attending various District Conferences over the next few months and I look forward to meeting and working with the students and alumni attendees.

Summer 2012 — The Reporter 5 2012 Biennial Convention Wrap-Up By Leslie Plummer, Editor, The Reporter Another Convention has come to a close, and it was a tremendous success! More than 100 Law School and Alumni Chapters were in attendance to help steer the Fraternity into the new biennium. Convention activities kicked off on Tuesday evening with the Key Volunteers Reception. International Vice Justice Ron Winter emceed the event with his signature dry humor. Among those sharing their stories of working with Rhonda Hill over the years were Past International Justice John Weitkamp, Chief Tribune Melissa Dewey, and International Board Member-at-Large Kim Gallant, who brought down the house with her declaration to become the “new Rhonda” while in a “Rhonda” costume. Wednesday morning saw the Executive Office staff and vendors busily setting up the registration area and preparing for the attendees arrivals. That evening, the Convention officially began with the procession of the International Officers and District Justices and the opening session. The Hon. Loretta Preska was on hand to accept the 2012 Barbara C. Jordan Award and to give the Convention's Keynote Speech. Later, attendees and guests gathered for the Stanley H. Kohn Memorial Reception to exchange stickers and pins representing their home cities and states, a Convention tradition. Convention activities began bright and early on Thursday with an early breakfast followed by committee meetings. After a luncheon honoring the International Advisory Board and Distinguished Service Chapter, the second general session was called to order. This session introduced a big change to how Convention business is handled—electronic voting cards! The evening ended poolside with The Frank McCown Purple and Gold Party. Members and guests enjoyed fraternizing with their brothers and sisters under the glow of the “moon light.” During the third general session on Friday morning, the Nominations Committee was selected and sequestered for the day while they interviewed potential candidates for International office and made their recommendations. After the session, members attended workshops on Chapter operations and “Free Publicity” hosted by Jeff Crilley. A highlight of the afternoon’s session was the presentation of the John J. McAulay Legal Educator Award to Dean Penny Willrich of the Phoenix School of

That evening's community service event—making cards for veterans at a nearby VA hospital, was well attended by members who were eager to show P.A.D.'s commitment to serving the community. The final day of Convention is always an exciting one, as it is election day for International Officers. The new officers for the 2012-2014 biennium are: International Justice Ronald J. Winter (Alden), International Vice Justice Stephen T. King (Wythe), International Secretary Kathleen Maloney (Kennedy), International Treasurer Daniel McDowell (Watson), International Marshal John Miquel (Mentschikoff), International Board Member- at-Large Arnold Hirsch (Coke), International Board Member-at-Large B.J. Maley (Webster), International Board Member-at-Large Araj Ahmed (Brandeis), and International Board Member-at-Large Jay Ross (Paterson). The newly- elected International Tribune is Chief Tribune Philip A. Greenberg (Rapallo), Associate Tribune John Karasek (Robert E. Redding Alumni), and Tad Bistor (W. Douglas). P.A.D. also presented the Tom C. Clark Equal Justice Under Law award to Kimberly Motley, who spoke at length about her storied career fighting for justice and her clients’ rights in Afghanistan. The Convention ended with the International Awards Banquet (see pages 8-9 for a list of all Chapter and District award winners), and the induction of Past International Justice Jack L. Miller (Benton) into the Distinguished Service Chapter—Phi Alpha Delta’s highest honor. The Distinguished Service Chapter is composed of members of the Fraternity who have been selected in recognition of unusual and outstanding service to the Fraternity. Membership is determined by unanimous election by the International Executive Board. We would like to thank all of our attendees, our speakers and, of course, the Convention Host Committee for helping us make this Convention so successful!

P.A.D.’s Historic Landmarks By Emma Yancey, P.A.D. Intern, Spring 2012 Phi Alpha Delta has a somewhat parallel relationship with the historical progression of the United States. P.A.D.’s close association with this history has ultimately led to its present character. War has previously been a threat to the Fraternity’s stability. However, fraternal bonding around the common interest of law allowed its brothers and sisters to answer the cries of war’s victims and return to more peaceable pursuits. World War I left P.A.D. with depleted roll calls and treasuries, but President Warren G. Harding’s 1921 initiation marked the recovery felt by both the U.S. and the Fraternity. Even the varied styles of The Reporter have reflected the happenings of the nation as the Fraternity participated in wartime conservation efforts. Additionally, national social movements nurtured the progressive nature of the legal profession and P.A.D. Without the right to vote, a group of dedicated women in 1911 created Phi Delta Delta, a legal fraternity which would witness the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution and the admittance of women to all law schools. The sisters of Phi Delta Delta observed and contributed to the infusion of women into the legal profession and P.A.D. recognized it with a merger in 1972. The merger was humorously described in a poem written by two members of Phi Delta Delta and titled “Resume of Past Events.” Marriage was utilized as an allegory for the monumental merger, and the groundbreaking consequences of the newfound unity were entertainingly simplified by asking “…are we brothers, or sisters, or actually ‘bristers’? Is it a fraternity, a sorority, or just a ‘fratority’?” P.A.D. has exemplified the progression of U.S. international policy as well. The President of the Republic of Mexico, Miguel Alemán Valdes, was the first international member of P.A.D. Not only a noteworthy occasion in P.A.D.’s history, this initiation began the trend of fraternal international expansion culminating in the first chapter chartered outside the United States in 1969. Since its formal establishment in 1902, P.A.D. has thus monumentally progressed to surpass the needs of its brothers and sisters along with the public they serve.

Summer 2012 — The Reporter 13 2012 Pre-Law Conference Dates Announced By Byron Rupp (Benson), Director of Pre-Law Operations The Pre-Law Conference will be held November 8-10 in Alexandria, VA at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center. Room rates have been negotiated for $124/night and the Conference registration fee for members will remain the same. This year’s conference will again include the Pre-Law Mock Trial Competition and the Pre-Law Law Expo. One of our Key Note Speaker for the Conference this year will be Adam Carroll who will be presenting two seminars. The first, Winning the Money Game, talks about a game that we all play with money, and at any given point in time in our lives, we’re either winning or losing. The problem is, most Americans were never taught the rules of how to play the game. Play by the rules, and it’s entirely possible to be completely financially free by your early 30’s. Make the rules up as you go and you’re bound to be relying on someone else for your financial well- being well into old age. You CAN have everything you want in life. Adam’s second seminar is about finding your dream job. Most college students don’t realize that their dream job is hidden somewhere in their own network, and with a little help, can be found prior to graduation. Adam’s description of the new “social capital” movement will have students on the edge of their seats as they come to grips with what they’ve been missing all along. In this “everybody wins” environment, your campus will be buzzing with Super Connectors long after the program is done. The conference will also feature seminars by The Princeton Review (the Premier Sponsor and Underwriter of the Pre-Law Program this year) Adam Carroll discussing the LSAT and ways to succeed. We’re also very excited to have Dean Michelle Rahman, the Associate Dean of Admissions from the University of Richmond and a panel of other admissions officers leading a discussion on the dos and don’ts of the law school application process. Begin planning for the 2012 Pre-Law Conference, Mock Trial Competition and Law Expo now by putting together fundraising programs to minimize the individual expense to your Chapters’ attendees. Please remember that each Chapter is expected to be represented. We look forward to seeing you there!

Summer 2012 — The Reporter 15 Chapter News – Pre-Law Chapters Two Pre-Law Chapters Branch Out and Find New Recruitment Success

Robert A. Gammage Pre-Law Chapter By Anna Thomas, President The Robert A. Gammage Pre-Law Chapter at Sam Houston State University continued its recruiting efforts in full-force this summer, as we participated in a University-held informational event every Thursday. SHSU hosts around 300 students and parents who have come to Huntsville to tour the campus during a two-day, fun-filled informational event. Our Chapter was given the chance to speak to incoming students about all the perks a lifelong Phi Alpha Delta member holds. It was a great opportunity to answer their questions regarding meetings, community involvement, and the ultimate gift of new friends and lasting connections. It also gave our members a chance to get our name out to the University. We were able to interest both alumni and Georgia Southern Pre-Law Chapter returning SHSU students in our meetings and events By Brittany Moore, President for the upcoming Fall semester. The Georgia Southern University Pre-Law Chapter began a new initiative in regards to increasing membership. Our new executive board— President Brittany Moore, Vice President Daniel Spruill, Secretary Kirsten Robinson, and Treasurer Jordan Bone— brainstormed about how we could help our Chapter grow. We decided to participate in a school-wide event called SOAR (Student Orientation and Registration) in order to recruit incoming freshman and transfer students. In preparation for SOAR, we created an eye catching display and became knowledgeable about all the opportunities P.A.D. Pre-Law offers to students. For five weeks we attended the SOAR sessions in hopes of gaining enthusiastic and dedicated recruits. All of our hard work was rewarded; the P.A.D. Pre-Law Chapter gained an unprecedented number of interested students compared to previous years. The new interest that was generated from SOAR makes us very excited to begin the 2012-2013 school year. We plan to participate in other school wide events. In addition to our new membership recruiting technique, we have also revamped our approach to delegation within our Pre- Law Chapter. We are focused on making our P.A.D. Pre- Law Chapter more like a family, an organization built on communication, support, and commitment.

16 The Reporter — Summer 2012 Chapter News – Pre-Law Chapters UF Pre-Law Chapter Takes First Place in Mock Trial Tournament for Charity By Maya Vaidya, Publicity Director Over the weekend of April 21st–22nd, the University of Florida held its Second Annual Mock Trial Charity Tournament. The UF Pre-Law Chapter and other pre-law organizations on campus competed to raise money for their charity of choice. Our team spent many long evenings practicing and perfecting their arguments, directs, and crosses. Their hard work was fueled by a desire to win, but, more importantly, by the desire to help a sick child. All of the proceeds from the event were donated to Devotions to Dalton, a charity started to raise money for treatments given to a baby boy born with the genetic disorder Trisomy 13. After several grueling rounds of competition, the UF Pre-Law Chapter’s Charity Team was declared the winner. While the team was thrilled to win first place, they found that having the opportunity to help Dalton and his family was even more rewarding. The UF Chapter was proud to have been a part of the Charity Tournament and looks forward to participating in similar events in the future.

Meet P.A.D.’s New Director of Law Operations We are pleased to introduce our newest staff member, Jim Lewis (Read). Jim hit the ground running, starting his career at P.A.D. during the 2012 Biennial Convention this past August. Jim hails from Owings, MD and attended the University of Delaware where he double majored in finance and busines management. He moved on to Widener Law where he joined the Read Chapter, serving as Vice Justice during the 2010–2011 academic year. When asked about his P.A.D. experience, Jim said, “I love Phi Alpha Delta because it offered me an opportunity to showcase a skill set that lawyers need, but are not reflected by success in the classroom. I was able to show leadership, organization, management, etc. while at the same time, I was growing as a professional from the programming opportunities that P.A.D. provided to the student body at Widener.” Feel free to email Jim at [email protected] with any questions regarding Law School Chapter operations, or just to welcome him aboard!

Summer 2012 — The Reporter 19 Chapter News – Alumni Chapters Chicago Alumni Chapter Going Strong In Its 101st Year By Pierre W. Priestley, Justice and Julie-April Montgomery, Chapter Executive Board Member Phi Alpha Delta’s oldest Alumni Chapter, The Chicago Alumni Chapter (CAC) began its 101st year of continual active operation with a group of outstanding programs that exemplify the Fraternity’s mission. On March 25th the Chapter held its annual St. PADdy’s Day luncheon at the Misericordia-Heart of Mercy Home, a residential facility for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities, many of whom are physically challenged as well. Misericoridia was chosen as the location of our luncheon to bring attention to the tremendous work being done on behalf of our most vulnerable citizens. The Chapter donated a portion of the luncheon’s proceeds to Misericordia. At the St. PADdy’s Luncheon, the CAC honored six of its members with the Chapter’s Centennial Award for exceptional long-term service to the Fraternity and the Chapter. Royal F. Berg, John Peter Curielli, Gene K. Edlin, James Erwin, Sharon Hunt Muryn, and Michele M. Jochner joined five other living Centennial Awardees named in 2011 whose contributions and service were recognized as being an indispensable and integral part of the history of the Chicago Alumni Chapter. In April the CAC participated in the annual March of Dimes “Walk for Babies” for the 15th year in a row. Our walkers and donors raised $10,616 this year. The Chapter’s relationship with the March of Dimes goes back to 1998 when at the urging of former Chapter Justice, Julie-April Montgomery, the CAC fielded a team to walk in the March of Dimes Walkathon. Since then, our walkers and donors have contributed a remarkable $120,629 to the March of Dimes. In five of our first six years of participation, the CAC won a “Silver Award” for raising in excess of $2,500 for the Walkathon. For the last nine years we have been recognized with the “Platinum Award” signifying a contribution in excess of $10,000. On May 10th our Chapter hosted a book signing by Chapter member, Judge Sam Amirante (Ret.), for his book: “John Wayne Gacy: Defending a Monster.” Sam Amirante, a relatively young defense attorney at the time saw his life change when he got a phone call from Gacy, one of America’s most notorious serial killers, and heard the words “Sam, could you do me a favor?” Sam and his co-author, Danny Broderick, provided the audience with riveting details of the investigation and eventual conviction of the man known as the “killer clown.” As the lead defense attorney for a nationally known and reviled defendant, Sam detailed why he undertook such an unpopular and personally dangerous cause. Judge Amirante was initiated into the Daniel Webster Law School Chapter and has been a long time member of the Chicago Alumni Chapter. We are proud to count among our brethren one who is committed to ensuring that representation is extended to those charged with even the most heinous of crimes. The Chicago Alumni Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta has a long tradition of service to our law schools, students, the profession and our community. The above activities are just a few of the ways that we express our commitment to help our fraternity, profession, and community.

20 The Reporter — Summer 2012 Chapter News – Alumni Chapters Chicago Area Alumni Chapter Member Honored by Court By Pierre W. Priestley, Justice On June 29, 2012 many members of our Chapter were happy to participate in the honoring of a true legal legend, our brother, Hon. George N. Leighton (Ret.). On that date the Cook County Board of Commissioners and Circuit Court renamed the county’s Criminal Court Building after our distinguished brother. The old court building, previously known by the nickname “26th & Cal” is now known as the Honorable George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Chief Judge Timothy Evans appointed CAC executive board member Hon. William H. Hooks as the general chairman of the renaming committee. Judge Hooks appointed immediate past CAC Justice Michele Jochner as his co-chair for this memorable event. Judge Hooks and Ms Jochner planned an extraordinary ceremony that drew local, state, and federal elected officials and members of the bench and bar. As a result of Judge Hooks’ leadership Phi Alpha Delta members played a prominent role in all aspects of the renaming ceremony and were singled out for their contribution to the event. George N. Leighton was born in October, 1912 in New Bedford, MA to immigrant parents from Cape Verde, Africa. His early life was working in the cranberry bogs of his native Massachusetts. Committed to bettering his life, he won a scholarship to Howard University where he graduated magna cum laude. From Howard he attended Harvard University’s law school and graduated in 1946 after a stint as a Captain in the U.S. Army. After moving to Chicago to practice law, Judge Leighton began a distinguished career as a civil rights attorney, activist, law professor, and assistant attorney general. Judge Leighton’s legal career progressed with positions on the Cook County Circuit Court, Illinois Appellate Court, and finally a lifetime appointment to the U.S. District Court (ND, IL). The Chicago Alumni Chapter was pleased to initiate Judge Leighton on October 21, 2009, one day before his 97th birthday. We are proud to count such a distinguished and important figure in American legal history as one of our own.

In Memoriam: Peter M. Sikora (Chapter), 1951–2012 Peter M. Sikora, a judge at Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, died on April 19 following a five-month battle with pneumonia. A Cleveland, OH native, Judge Sikora suffered a crippling sporting accident at 17 which cost him the use of his legs. Sikora earned his undergraduate degree from Baldin-Wallace College where he graduated with honors. He then attended Case Western Reserve University School of Law where he joined the Hay Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta, and served as associate editor of the law review. Brother Sikora held many public offices during his career, including Deputy Legal Counsel to Governor Richard Celeste from 1983-1986, Deputy Director and General Counsel to the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, and Administrative Judge of the Cuyahoga Juvenile Court. He was active in the community, and the recipient of multiple awards including the Outstanding Citizen Award of the National Council on Disabilities. Bill O'Neill, a former Ohio appeals judge said of Sikora, “He accomplished more in a wheelchair than most of us do standing tall. The man’s life is the definition of courage.”
