(Esther) Jones of East Liverpool. The Shone history was supplemented by information provided by Mrs. Joan Kelsall of Buckley and Steven Shone, formerly of Buckley. The history of the Bloors in East Liverpool was supplemented by information from Mrs. Dolores Wheatley David of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Margaret Schneider of Vacaville, California; Allan Bloor of Collierville, Tennessee; and Cathy Platt. Mr. W. Spencer Bloor late of Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania provided his considerable knowledge of the Bloors of Trenton and his great grandfather, Enoch Bloor. Mrs. Kath Barker and Ian Bloor of the Bloor Society provided parish register transcripts that proved that this Enoch was the son of Enoch Bloor and Elizabeth Pool. Ian Bloor and Joyce Settle have done much to try to connect various Bloor trees. She was born September 22, 1821 in Hanley, Staffordshire in the English Potteries district and baptized at St. John's, Hanley October 24, 1841. Her parents were Enoch Bloor and Elizabeth Pool and I know of nine siblings. Esther married Samuel Shone from Buckley, Flintshire on December 15, 1839 in Hanley. Sometime between 1847 and 1850 Samuel and Esther returned to Buckley. They had eight children including my great-grandfather, William Shone, born in Fenton in 1845. Esther died January 2, 1899 in Buckley. Esther Bloor married Samuel Shone on December 15, 1839 in Hanley. They subsequently lived in Buckley, Flintshire and had eight children. Their second son, William Shone, was my great grandfather. William married Fanny Peters in Buckley and they had 12 children. Their seventh child, Lily Shone was my grandmother. She married John Iredale and they were bakers and confectioners, owning a shop in the Lane End area of Buckley until the mid 1950’s. Lily and John had two daughters, Olwen who now lives in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, and my mother, Joan, who lived in Buckley before passing away in 2005. Olwen has one son, Ian Wilson, who lives in Hatherton, Cheshire and teaches at Staffordshire University in Stoke. I grew up in Buckley, attended Imperial College, London, and have lived in the United States since 1977. In the 1841 census, Samuel and Esther, with daughter Emma 8 months old were living in the Lane End district of Stoke-on-Trent now part of Longton. Samuel is listed as a coal miner and Esther as a pot painter. They were living in Wood St., which is in the centre of modern Longton, off King Street, opposite Longton Station. Thomas Shone is also listed in Wood St., with wife Martha and children, Edward, Thomas and Charlotte. Based on age and his mother’s name, Charlotte, Thomas is identified as Samuel’s brother born in 1813. (Thomas is probably the same Thomas found in Tranmere in 1881.) William Shone was listed in Church St., living with Charles and Sarah Jones. This is in the centre of Stoke near the Spode Museum. Thomas and William are listed as coal miners like Samuel. In 1845, Samuel and Esther were living in China St., Fenton, as listed on the birth certificate of their second son, William, my great grandfather. China St. is in the centre of Fenton about one mile from Wood St. in Longton. C:\Users\peter.kelsall\Documents\Personal\Bloor\Bloor_History.doc 2 Created by Peter Kelsall, 2016© Enoch Bloor and Elizabeth Pool Enoch Bloor and Elizabeth Pool were the parents of Esther Bloor (Peter Kelsall’s 3x great grandparents). They were married at St. Peter's1, Stoke, Staffordshire on January 12, 18082. Joseph Bloore, likely Enoch's brother, was a witness. Enoch Bloor was born in about 1785. He was identified in the parish registers at the time of his marriage and most of his children’s baptisms as a potter, and on Elizabeth's death certificate as a pot presser. However, at the time of daughter Edney’s birth in 1814 he was listed as a soldier3. Enoch died 20 January, 1842 in Fenton aged 56. The certificate lists asthma as the cause. Daughter Esther was present at the death. Elizabeth Pool is identified in the parish register records of her children’s christenings as the daughter of Hanley Pool (or Poole) of Hanley. From the records of St. John’s Church, Hanley, Elizabeth Poole daughter of Hanley and Hannah Poole of Hanley was born December 6, 1790. Hanley Poole of Stoke Parish married Hannah Tams also of Stoke parish at Norton-le-Moors Church on October 11, 1789. Elizabeth died 10 January, 1859 at Gate St., Fenton aged 68. The certificate lists disease of the stomach as the cause. Her daughter, Martha Copestack was present at the death. In the 1841 census, the Bloor family was living in the Terrace Building4 in Fenton. Children living with Enoch and Elizabeth were James, Edwin, Enoch, Joseph, Jesse and Mary Ann. The complete family can be traced through the parish registers5, and census records. • Harriett. Baptised March 1, 18126. Not found in census and no likely marriage in IGI. • Edney. Baptised August 10, 1814 at St. John's Hanley. Not found in census and no likely marriage in IGI. 1 The present St. Peter's was built in 1826. The original churchyard contains the tombs of Josiah Wedgwood, Josiah Spode and Thomas Minton 2 Copy of original parish register provided by Kath Barker. Name spelled Bloore. 3 This was the time of the Napoleonic Wars, ended at Waterloo 18 June 1815. 4 The Terrace Buildings were still in existence in the 1881, the census listing 23 separate residences. The location is identified on the C19 Ordnance Survey map near the center of Fenton approximately in the location of the present-day north-south spur of the A50 adjacent to Glebedale Park. This was within a few hundred feet of China St. where Samuel and Esther Shone were living in 1845. The location was near Glebe and Oldfield Collieries and many china works including Minerva, Lane Delph and Park. Other families present in 1841 included that of Thomas Ball, an ancestor of Donald Massey. Thomas was born in Hawarden Parish but married his wife in Stoke, just like Samuel Shone. 5 From registers provided by Kath Barker, except as noted. The registers identify Joseph as the seventh child, Jesse as the fifth son, and Elizabeth and Mary Ann as the fifth and sixth daughters. This indicates no missing children before Jesse but a daughter missing between Jesse and Elizabeth; this does not seem to be correct after daughter Martha was identified. 6 IGI C:\Users\peter.kelsall\Documents\Personal\Bloor\Bloor_History.doc 3 Created by Peter Kelsall, 2016© • Martha: Baptised 6 Oct 1816 at Hanley, daughter of Enoch Bloar (sic) and Elizabeth, married George Copstake 10 Aug 1835 Stoke7. Present at mother’s death. • James. Born about 18198. James married Mary Brandred at Hanley December 7, 18459. In 1861 and 1871 James and Mary are living at 36 Gate St with children Harriet and Ann (later called Annie E. and Elizabeth in the census). Mary and daughter Elizabeth, 37, were still living at 36 Gate St. in 1881.10 Elizabeth may be the Annie living at 24 Gate Street in 1891 (correct age but noted as a widow). • Esther. My great-great-grandmother, born September 22, 1821 baptised at St. John's, Hanley October 24, 1841. • Edwin. Baptised February 15, 1824 at St. John's Hanley. Living at the Terrace Building in 1851 with wife Margaret11 and children John, Jesse and Emily. I have not found this Edwin in any later census. In the 1871 census Margaret has remarried to George Hughes and is living at Fenton Park with children Marronya (sic12) and Mary. In the 1881 census Margaret and George Hughes were living at 55 Victoria Rd. with children Emily (30) and William (9)13. William is living at the Terrace Buildings in 1901, unmarried living with housekeeper Annie Cox. George and Annie are living at China St. Fenton in 1911 with children William, Ethel, Thomas, Sarah, Richard14 and Annie. • Enoch.
