The Making of A Writer Brendan Jackson looks into the memories of David Christie Murray (1847-1907) David Christie Murray was born in West Bromwich in 1847. Some 50 years later he described the locale as ‘a rather doleful hybrid of a place - neither town nor country... a compact business- like town now, and its spreading industries have defaced the lovely fringe of country which used to be around it.’ Of his childhood days he fondly recalled a ‘diamond stream’ in which he used to bathe but ‘now running ink, and giving forth vile odours.’ He described long summer afternoons shading into evenings, hearing the clank of pig-iron being loaded into the boats on the canal at Bromford, the thump of a steam hammer at nearby Dawes’s foundry. He remembered seeing half-naked figures sweating and toiling at the puddling furnaces, seeing poor nailmakers at work ‘in their own sordid back kitchens about the Ling or Virgin’s End.’ As a youngster he made the acquaintance of the Tipton Slasher, William Perry (1818-1880), who ran a public house on Spon Lane (which was called ‘The Champion of England.’ He recalled: ‘the Slasher’s house was the last on the right-hand side - a shabby, seedy place enough, smoke-encrusted on the outside and mean within, but a temple of splendour all the same to the young imagination.’ Murray’s way to school led him past this public-house, by the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, the dividing line of the parishes of Smethwick and West Bromwich, and he was witness to several bare-knuckle contests in this locality.

  • Hitchmoughs Black Country Pubs
HITCHMOUGH’S BLACK COUNTRY PUBS WEST BROMWICH (Inc. Golds Green, Greets Green, Hill Top, Lyndon) 3rd. Edition - © 2014 Tony Hitchmough. All Rights Reserved www.longpull.co.uk INTRODUCTION Well over 40 years ago, I began to notice that the English public house was more than just a building in which people drank. The customers talked and played, held trips and meetings, the licensees had their own stories, and the buildings had experienced many changes. These thoughts spurred me on to find out more. Obviously I had to restrict my field; Black Country pubs became my theme, because that is where I lived and worked. Many of the pubs I remembered from the late 1960’s, when I was legally allowed to drink in them, had disappeared or were in the process of doing so. My plan was to collect any information I could from any sources available. Around that time the Black Country Bugle first appeared; I have never missed an issue, and have found the contents and letters invaluable. I then started to visit the archives of the Black Country boroughs. Directories were another invaluable source for licensees’ names, enabling me to build up lists. The censuses, church registers and licensing minutes for some areas, also were consulted. Newspaper articles provided many items of human interest (eg. inquests, crimes, civic matters, industrial relations), which would be of value not only to a pub historian, but to local and social historians and genealogists alike. With the advances in technology in mind, I decided the opportunity of releasing my entire archive digitally, rather than mere selections as magazine articles or as a book, was too good to miss.

  • The Making of a Writer Brendan Jackson Looks Into the Memories Of
The Making of A Writer Brendan Jackson looks into the memories of David Christie Murray (1847-1907) David Christie Murray was born in West Bromwich in 1847.

  • WOLVERHAMPTON CHRONICLE 1850 to 1859 1 16 January 1850
WOLVERHAMPTON CHRONICLE 1850 to 1859 1 16 January 1850 SMETHWICK RAILWAY CHAIR STEALING On Wednesday, police officer Critchlow apprehended, in Wharf Street, Birmingham, a man named Henry Parkes, a boatman, who the same morning between five and six o'clock was observed, with another man not yet in custody, loading a boat with some railway chairs from a large pile which had been deposited on the canal side near the newly erected railway bridge, the property of Mr Pickering, contractor for this portion of the Stour Valley Railway. Information was given to Mr Pickering, who immediately sent one of his foremen in pursuit of the boat and the men. Near to Monument Lane Bridge they were overtaken ; but finding or expecting they were watched, the two men decamped. The value of the chairs is £12, and they were 94 in number. It appears that Parkes and his companion stole away the boat from its anchorage near Tindal Bridge, and took it to Smethwick for the purpose of the robbery. 2 27 February 1850 WOLVERHAMPTON POLICE OFFICE, FRIDAY William Millington, a boatman on the Birmingham Canal at Wolverhampton, was fined 10s and costs for wasting water in the canal. SATURDAY Henry Roden, a boatman, was charged with stealing a quantity of tea from a boat lying at Mr Shipton's wharf some weeks since. Mr H Underhill appeared for the prosecution. Several of the witnesses, who are boatmen, not being in attendance, the prisoner was remanded for a week to afford time for collecting the necessary evidence. Daniel Fulward and William Sharratt, who had been taken into custody on suspicion of receiving a portion of the tea knowing it to have been stolen, were discharged, it being stated that they would be called as witnesses for the prosecution.
