THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hi everyone, firstly, let me pass on my sincere thanks to all who attended and contributed to the magnificent evening at the special February Social Breast Cancer fundraiser. In my time at the club I have never seen our Social crowd that big; over 200 people. Events like this don’t just come together on their own, and so many of our dedicated members worked tirelessly both on the night and in the preparation, to ensure the event was a great success. I felt proud and privileged to be able to hand over the cheque for $2,000 to the Redlands Breast Cancer Support Group.

I spoke to a number of people throughout the night who were attending the club for the first time and without exception they asked “how long has this been going on?” One man told me he’d lived in Cleveland for over 20 years and drove past the Pinklands Reserve twice a week but didn’t realise we existed. I suppose we managed to not only raise awareness for the Redlands Cancer Support Group but also to advertise our club at the same time.

The size of February’s crowd also bought home a few hard truths regarding our facilities when tested by a large crowd. It was a timely reminder as we progress with the development of a club strategic plan, that to continue to prosper we need to be on top of such issues.

I’m sure many good deeds went unnoticed on the night however; it would be remiss of me not to mention two generous acts that I’m aware of. Firstly, our guest artist, Jim Harding, donated three CD’s to the club raffles as well as contributing $5 for every CD sold on the night to the fundraiser; thanks very much Jim. And secondly, Jack Files generously gave up his walk-up spot to allow time for Karen Williams to perform. A terrific effort Jack! However, Jack did manage to appear on stage to join in the backing vocals for Greg O’Grady during the final act of the night.

We’re all very proud of the performance of one of our youngest members, Kiara Rodrigues, on Channel 10’s Young Talent Time recently. For those who may have missed the show, Kiara was participating in a talent quest segment. She performed an original composition and accompanied herself on guitar. Like a seasoned professional she had the crowd enthralled (particularly Jude and Mel). Kiara obviously impressed the judges as well, receiving some very complimentary feedback.

Just recently, Rod Bickford, presented a Club Sound Equipment Workshop at the clubhouse. The workshop was open to all members and those who attended were treated to a pleasant, informative, professional presentation on the basics of the club

Redlands Modern Country Music Club 4

MARCH NEWSLETTER 2012 sound equipment. Producing the best possible quality of sound should always be a key objective of the club and the more members that are skilled in this area the easier that should be to achieve. I take this opportunity to thank Rod for donating his time to assist the club in this way and to commend Rod and Des Boughen for the enthusiastic manner in which they have responded to this identified need within the club.

Late news hot off the presses - our club members once again did us proud at the Warwick Country Music Festival/Talent Quest held over the last weekend in February. The list of event winners and place-getters reads like a “who’s who” of the RMCMC. Congratulations to all our members who competed and a special well done to our very own secretary and pikelet maker Bill Healey who was judged the overall competition winner. Well done Bill; that makes it two years in a row for the Redlands with Pat Sailor taking the prize last year. Go RMCMC! ....full report in the next newsletter.

PLAYING BASIC PICKING PATTERNS

The words fingerstyle and fingerpicking describe a style of guitar playing in which you literally pick the strings with your individual fingers and your thumb rather than with a pick. Start by assigning the thumb and fingers to particular strings and use this idea to learn some basic patterns. This idea is called pattern picking.

Let’s start with a D chord. For our first pattern, we’re going to use the index, middle, and ring fingers along with the thumb. Here’s how these fingers are indicated in the notation (see example below): p = thumb i = index m = middle a = ring

This custom comes from classical guitar notation, where p stands for pulgar, i stands for indice, m stands for medio, and a stands for anular (the Spanish words for thumb, index finger, middle finger, and ring finger). It takes a little getting used to, but this is how picking-hand fingerings are often indicated.

To start, rest your thumb on the fourth string, your index finger on the third string, your middle finger on the second string, and your ring finger on the first string. For now, your fingers are assigned to these strings: you’re always going to use your thumb for the fourth string, index for the third, middle for the second string, and ring for the first string.

To play Ex 1 below, just go up the strings, picking each string once with the assigned finger. Just think of it as rolling up the strings: thumb, index, middle, then ring. When that feels comfortable, try doing it two times in a row (Ex 2 below). This is one of those things that basically just gets better with simple and constant repetition. Do it slowly enough to get every note sounding even and clear.

JUST MARRIED

Well we have finally married off our 2nd daughter, Sarah.

Sarah married Arthur (Artie) Hanna in Kurrie Kurrie near Newcastle on Saturday 18 February. They have bought a chook farm there together and now look forward to married bliss on their 40 acres with Artie’s 11 year old son Mason, and 60 thousand chooks.

We had to plan ahead. Travelling to Newcastle with the family would be an issue, where to stay, how to get around then how to help organise the From Left: 1Emma, Artie, Sarah, Laura wedding and reception.

Finally we decided that Loretta and myself with daughters Emma and Laura, our grandchildren 2 year old toddler Abbie and 3 month old Hayden would travel down four days before the wedding. The husbands Kyle and Bryn and our son Robert would travel down later, the day before the wedding.

We finally decided to fly to Newcastle and scored some discount airfares; Emma found a house in Cessnock where we all could stay together. We hired a car and borrowed Sarah’s car, it was complex travelling allowing for parking at Brisbane, arranging baby seats and excess baggage.

Preparation was full on as the wedding reception was to be on the farm, with a marquee and dance floor and spit roast caterer. Lots of clearing & mowing of the site happened. Meanwhile the ladies worked on their clothing issues, marquee decorations and catering issues.

The wedding day quickly arrived, flowers, clothing, hairstyles and makeup and all that stuff had to be arranged.

The boys travelling from Brisbane on Friday night had their flight cancelled. Jetstar!!! arragh. They managed to get on a flight at 12 noon Saturday, but the wedding is set for 3pm in NSW. The flight landed at 2pm NSW time, they made it to the church at 10

Redlands Modern Country Music Club 10

MARCH NEWSLETTER 2012 to 3. But then had to find their clothes & get dressed for the ceremony. It was a close run thing.

So I finally walked Sarah down the aisle at 3:30pm. Sarah looked beautiful, Laura and Emma were the bridesmaids with lots of pageboys and flower girls, and the ceremony went off without a hitch. Rose Carleo sang Amazing Grace (a’capella), Lisa Bye took the photos. Bride & groom were spoiled with the drive to the church in BMW and back to the farm in a convertible Mercedes Benz.

The reception was a big show with lovely food and wine and lots of music. Arthur’s family are from Lebanon so there were lots of Lebanese things happening including money sprinkled on the bride. There were about 150 people mostly from NSW but some of our extended family came down from Queensland. So we had a few Queensland and NSW jokes, I couldn’t think of any Lebanese jokes, so I didn’t. The Hannas are a beautiful family and were very gracious in welcoming Sarah to their community. Loretta and I have been invited to come & stay with them in anytime we are in the neighbourhood.

The return trip home was just as much fun as going down, with babies, strollers and luggage but we made it safely. The flight from Newcastle left at 11am NSW time and arrived in Queensland at 11:10am Queensland time. Picked up the car from the car park without a hitch and got home to have a rest, I had to get up at 6 the next morning to do a program on BayFM but that’s another story…..

Congratulations Sarah & Artie (ole married chooks!!)

Best wishes always from all at RMCMC

THIS MONTH’S GUEST ARTIST Jeff Brown

Traditional country music artist Jeff Brown believes that a good Bush Ballad tells a story that touches the heart of everyday Aussies. Jeff delivers these stories with quality and sincerity.

Jeff grew up on the family property on the Darling Downs in Qld in a household where only country music was played. It was the foundation for his passion for Bush Ballads which he still holds today.

Jeff recorded and released his first album “I Remember Gordon Parsons” as a tribute to Gordon in 1997.

His talents were recognised and he was privileged to tour with the Brian Young Show for 4 months in 1998, an experience which helped mould him into the successful entertainer he is today. Jeff now has 5 albums under his belt and has been nominated in the finals of the Golden Guitar awards in Tamworth 4 times. Jeff won the coveted award in 2005 with the track “Where the Yellow Kapocks Bloom” from the “Mate I’m Feelin Lucky” album.

In 2000 he bought an old Value Liner Mack Truck and when he isn’t singing, he is usually carting cotton or grain.

With farming held close to his heart and personal involvement with the transport industry, Jeff relates to the songs that he sings.

Sit back and enjoy being entertained by Jeff Brown. Grab a Jeff Brown cd afterwards and perhaps have him sign it for you.

FEB SOCIAL ROUNDUP All the signs were favourable; a warm February evening beckoned and the crowd began streaming in soon after 5.00pm. And as they arrived they were greeted by a sea of pink representing our Brest Cancer Fundraiser. Table clothes and decorations; women’s and even men’s clothes were pink (although Steve Wootton insists his shirt was salmon); it was a wonderful sight. The crowd quickly filled the main

under-cover area and spread out onto the grass perimeter. Every available chair was in use. Some patrons even returned to their cars to retrieve deck chairs from the boot. The heartening crowd of around 200 stretched our resources to the limit. Thankfully, our usual team of club volunteers was bolstered by Lex Kline, Robyn Boult, Col and Carolyn McCann as well as Wendy and Arthur King and Dawn Tuche. With club stalwarts Bill and Dawn away touring Tasmania, Loretta and Allen McMonagle put in a huge effort to fill in as Providore in addition to their various other duties on the night. But alas, there were to be no pikelets tonight. The big crowd and the warm night nearly threatened to overwhelm Paddy behind the bar, but thankfully he received some welcome assistance from Karen and Steve Wootton. Our kick- start artist this month was that man in the big white hat and the “porn star” moustache – Kevin Brown. With a couple of Eagles songs and some welcome assistance from Dehlia, Allen, Neil and Tom and of course Dennis on drums, our night got off to a fabulous start. It was really pleasing from, a club perspective, to welcome so many Members of State Parliament and local Councillors to the club in support

of this worthy cause. And while her upcoming mayoral opponent may have managed a yodelling gig on stage, Redlands Mayor Melva Hobson responded by winning one of the raffle prizes. This special night also saw a welcome return to the club stage for local councillor and mayoral candidate Karen Williams. Karen reunited with the Blue Grass Boys for a brief but exciting set

that included a magnificent display of her trademark yodelling prowess.

Inevitably as the crowd numbers grew, so did the list of potential walk-up artists. In fact, with the additional activities associated with this special event, we were looking down the barrel of a very late finish. But thanks to Jack Files and Allen Mac selflessly volunteering to forgo their walk-up spots and the final half dozen acts graciously agreeing to one song each, Jim Harding we managed to conclude at a reasonable hour. But on a night full of the memorable moments, which included a stand-out performance from guest artist Big Jim Harding, the biggest thrill was surely the generosity of our members and enabling us to raise a staggering $1850. The club rounded this amount up, resulting in a $2000 donation to the Redlands Breast John, Pam, Wendy, Dehlia Cancer Support Group.
