Many futurologists in the sixties thought science and technolo gywould offer man unprecedented possibilities for solving hls problems. The fall of the Iron Curtain and the implosion of the Eastern Block also created, just a, few years ago, grand expectations. The dream did not come true, however. Rather than ending up in a technological paradise and a peace-Ioving world, we woke up in a torn world with virtually unsolvable environmental problems and agonising social conditions. Although the level of prosperity in the West has increased greatly, the side effects of technological and economic developments can no longer be ignored and the lirnits to growth are becoming dear. The old dividing lines between the nations, and the suppressed antitheses among ideolo gies, have reappeared on the surface and are causing extreme ten sion and conflicts. The general faith in progress has disappeared and important current problems seem insoluble. Fast-paced developments, increased mobility and the growing impact of the mass media have also disoriented many people. The world around them has changed so fast that they have become alienated from it and can no longer find their way. They no long er find anything to hold onto in the traditional ideologieal, social and political systems, which have lost much of their naturalness, credibility, attractiveness and influence. Even science do not offer intellectuals a satisfactory final answer. The large amount of information that has been collected through specialistic science does not form a coherent whole and leaves the fundament al questions unanswered. We are experiencing the end of the big dreams and the 'great narratives'. It seems that there are no longer clear and generally accepted views about the nature of reality and about man's task in the world. A pluriform society is not succeeding in formulating universally agreed and powerfull answer to the pressing and worldwide problems with which it is being confronted. Many young people can no longer find a place for themselves, lack a project to which l C--C-" '--,-, - Intraductian Intraductian they can dedicate themselves and see no goal for which to live. Based on the Belgian animated cult TV series (which was released by Wallace & Gromit’s Aardman Studios), Panic stars three plastic toys named Cowboy, Indian and Horse who share a rambling house in a rural town that never fails to attract the weirdest events. Cowboy and Indian’s plan to gift Horse with a homemade barbeque backfires when they accidentally buy 50 million bricks. Whoops! This sets off a perilously wacky chain of events as the trio travel to the center of the earth, trek across frozen tundra and discover a parallel underwater universe of pointy-headed (and dishonest!) creatures. Each speedy char- acter is voiced—and animated—as if they are filled with laughing gas. With panic a permanent feature of life in this papier-mâché burg, will Horse and his equine paramour—flame-tressed music teacher Madame Longray (Jeanne Balibar)—ever find a quiet moment alone? A sort of Gallic Monty Python crossed with Art Clokey on acid, A Town Called Panic is zany, brainy and altogether insane-y! INTRODUCTION A Town Called Panic is one of the rare full-length animated films ever to secure the honor of a coveted slot in the Official Selection (in this case, Out of Competition) at Cannes.

Abandoned Cars is Tim Lane’s first collection of graphic short stories, noir- ish narratives that are united by their exploration of the great American mytho- logical drama by way of the desperate and haunted characters that populate its pages. Lane’s characters exist on the margins of society—alienated, floating in the void between hope and despair, confused but introspective. The writing is straightforward, the stories mainstream but told in a pulpy idiom with an existential edge, often in the first person, reminiscent of David Goodis’s or Jim Thompson’s prose, or of films like Pick-Up on South Street or Out of the Past. Visually, Lane’s drawing is in a realistic mode, reminiscent of Charles Burns, that heightens the tension in stories that veer between naturalism on the one hand and the comical, nightmarish, and hallucinatory on the other. Here, American culture is a thrift store and the characters are thrift store junkies living among the clutter. It’s an America depicted as a subdued and haunted Coney Island, made up of lost characters—boozing, brawling, haplessly shooting themselves in the face, and hopping freight trains in search of Elvis.
