The Spirit of Pong by Larry Hodges Copyright 2015 v07-03-15 Cover Illustration by Mike Mezyan of Mezyantt.com Bonus Short Story at End Ping-Pong Ambition The Spirit of Pong Dedication To table tennis players everywhere. Especially the spirited ones. 2 The Spirit of Pong Introduction This story was many years in the almost-making. I’m a professional table tennis coach & writer, and a professional science fiction & fantasy writer. What could be more natural than combining these two? Just about anything else. Let’s face it. Most stories about table tennis use the sport as a punch line. How could anyone take ping-pong seriously? But how about the Olympic Sport of Table Tennis? They really are the same thing, and you can call it either one. I actually like the stories that make fun of the sport! Those who know our sport know better. Those who don’t—well, why not take a quick trip to www.youtube.com, search for “Olympic Table Tennis,” and see what comes up? I’ve always wanted to combine the two, but it’s not easy finding a mix. I did write and sell “Ping-Pong Ambition,” the bonus short story at the end of this book. But I wanted something more serious. And then, one day, I mused over the idea of an American going to China to learn the secrets of table tennis . and this story was the result. This is not a conventional story, this is a fantasy. You will meet the spirits of a number of the past greats of our sport, and even the spirits of “what made them great” for some current and living players.

  • Table Tennis Times Report
13/04/2021 Dear Councillors As you know, I had prepared a document for you for consideration at the last meeting on the ITTF/WTT matter. Due to the length of the meeting we did not have an opportunity to discuss it at that time. Since then matters have moved on considerably. Diane Webb asked me to prepare an article for publication in the Table Tennis Times magazine which I have done and this has been published. This article gives you an update on the current position, however, this may move further before our meeting. For me, this is very concerning and I do believe Councillors should be aware of it and the ramifications, not just on sport around the world, but in particular, this country. TABLE TENNIS TIMES MAGAZINE ARTICLE Worrying Times at International Level I have had some concern for some time that the ITTF appear to be taking decisions that are reducing the benefits to most of its affiliated members, the 200 plus national associations, by weakening the structure that enables them to grow and prosper also the direction that the ITTF are taking at the moment, driven by WTT, would only boost a small number of the top associations and the leading 50 world ranked senior players. This concern has been accelerated by the formation of WTT (World Table Tennis) which is hugely controversial. WTT is a company which has acquired the lucrative ITTF marketing rights. Its Chair is Liu Guoliang, who is also President of the Chinese Table Tennis Association. Its Directors include ITTF Chief Executive, Steve Dainton, Marketing Director Matthew Pound and Khalil Al-Mohannadi from Qatar, who is also a member of the ITTF Executive Committee.

WE’RE BACK AND READY TO GO After our enforced mid-year hiatus, the Winter season has resumed. While there were a few rusty players and many creaking joints, the hall was full of people enjoying being back at the table. With only 2 weeks left in the Winter season, we will soon be battling it out in the finals. After that, we have the 3 weeks that everyone looks forward to. 2018 MTTA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Our thoughts should now turn to the annual Club Championships coming up in August. Some players choose not to attend these nights, thinking that they’re not good enough to challenge for the honours. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Club Championships are designed to provide a level playing field for all club members. Week 1 on the 2nd of August is the Handicap Championship. Every player has a chance of winning this, regardless of your standing in the club. Each player is given a handicap ranking and matches are played up to 31 points. Some top players may start on 0 or even a negative points score, while the lower rated players may start on up to 25 points.
