This prestigious scholarship and unique experience invites young people who are actively involved in promoting social cohesion in their communities to share ideas on how communities in the US and UK promote hope and inclusion. As the A Level results went live in the UK, Jess was exploring programmes that promote tolerance and inclusion in communities and schools in the US, whilst being exposed to diverse and vibrant urban communities that are struggling with the loss of employment. Jess achieved an A* in English Literature, alongside a grade A in Biology and grade A in History and has been offered a place at Robinson College, University of Cambridge to study Human, Social and Political Sciences. Jess’s passion for politics and social sciences was cultivated when she was elected as Member of the UK Youth Parliament in 2015, representing her home borough of Blackburn with Darwen. She was appointed to a position offering experience of the workings of government, regularly meeting with Councillors and MPs on boards and committees and taking part in the UK Youth Parliament’s Annual Debate televised live in the House of Commons. “The support you receive from St Mary’s is invaluable in the university application process.” Jess Henderson BE THE BEST www.stmarysblackburn.ac.uk HIGH FLYERS These top students scored 7 A*s and 7 As between them. “I have never experienced such a friendly, academic institution that provides the perfect Rachel Hulme (above), previously Chris Olive (above), ex- St Hania Buttar (above), a former environment in from St Bede’s, attained two A* Wilfrid’s, gained an A* in Pleckgate student, achieved an grades in Biology and Chemistry Business Studies, an A in A* in Geography and a grade A which one can and an A in Mathematics. • Ribblesdale High School Is a Mixed, Local Authority Maintained 11-16 Comprehensive School
Ribblesdale High School is a mixed, local authority maintained 11-16 comprehensive school. We are situated in the market town of Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley. Preston, Burnley, Blackburn, Colne, Manchester and North Yorkshire are within a 30-45 minute car journey. A large part of the Ribble Valley lies in The Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the school has views of Pendle Hill and Longridge Fell as well as the town’s Norman castle. Our pupils come from Clitheroe and from the surrounding areas (about one third use school transport). We are a popular school in the local community and have 1304 pupils on roll, aged 11-16. There are 76 teachers and 48 support staff. The Senior Leadership Team is substantively the Headteacher, two Deputy Headteachers, the School Business Manager, a Senior Assistant Headteacher and two Assistant Headteachers. The school’s last Ofsted inspection took place in January 2019. Inspectors recognised that the school has maintained high standards and were judged ‘Good’ in all areas of the inspection. However, our ambition is to become an outstanding institution in all that we do. The school has a long tradition of harnessing new technologies to enhance learning. We are one of only a handful of schools globally to become a Microsoft Training Academy. This involves working closely with Microsoft to promote and develop new technologies to improve the quality of teaching and learning. The Curriculum At Ribblesdale we offer a broad and balanced curriculum in a range of subjects to all year groups. Both English Literature and Religious Education benefit from early entry in Year 10.

Definitions For Voluntary Aided, Foundation, Free Schools and Academies for Admission Purposes The following terms used throughout this booklet are defined as below, except where individual arrangements spell out a different definition. Distance The 'straight line' method of measurement only applies for admission purposes. For transport 'walking routes' are used to determine distance. Explanations of these terms can be found in the main booklet. Parents/Family Members A parent is any person who has parental responsibility or care of the child. Where admission arrangements refer to 'parent's attendance at church' it is sufficient for just one parent to attend. 'Family members' include only parents and siblings. Medical/Social/Welfare Where schools have a medical/social/welfare admission criterion then this should take into account the circumstances of the child and the family. Please note the Local Authority information in the accompanying admissions booklet. Looked After and Previously Looked After Children The School Admissions Code [December 2014] states that within the oversubscription criteria, the highest priority must be given to looked after children and children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order). A ' looked after child' ( 1 ) or a child who was previously looked after but immediately after being looked after became subject to an adoption ( 2 ) child arrangements order (residency order) ( 3 ) or special guardianship order ( 4) . (1) A 'looked after child' is a child who is (a) in the care of a local authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (see the definition in Section 22(1) of the Children Act 1989) at the time of making an application to a school (2) This includes children who were adopted under the Adoption Act 1976 (see section 12 adoption orders) and children who were adopted under the Adoption and Childrens Act 2002 (see section 46 adoption orders).
