Dr. Phramaha Somboon Vuddhikaro : Prof. Udaya Meddegama Date of Graduation : March 11, 2019 Abstract Throughout the history, people have tried to understand the world to reduce suffering and increase human happiness. Scientists and many others try to put their best effort to increase the way of satisfying the human senses, as they believed that it is the way to end suffering and gain ultimate happiness. However, Buddhist perspective of world in relation to human happiness and suffering is slightly different from this approach. Buddha has clearly mentioned that one cannot gain ultimate happiness from the external world just by trying to satisfy senses and also craving for that leads to more and more suffering. According to Buddhism, one has to understand the reality of what suffering is, causes of it, cessation of suffering, and the path leading to that in order to gain ultimate happiness. Buddha has also mentioned that this world lies on suffering, and to understand the reality of the world, causes of it, its cessation, and the path leading to that cannot be found externally, but within this fathom long body. The question arises here is, whether the world can give real human happiness with no suffering, as many people including scientists are trying to gain happiness by improving material world in order to satisfy senses, or is there any other path shown by the Buddha. This research investigates the above question in detail with reference to Theravāda Buddhism. Therefore, it is important to investigate the relevant sections of the Tipiṭaka and interpretations of it as the primary source. In this research data collection is based on accessing those resources by using books, publications, meeting or listening to sermons of practioners, and also by using internet resources. The methodology applied here is not just based on referring to scholarly work, but also to use practical experience to ii critically analyze, with the aim of revealing the Buddha’s intention of teachings with respect to gain ultimate happiness. Initial parts of the research try to understand how philosophers, scientists, and other non-Theravāda teachings tried to gain the happiness from the world and to see whether they have achieved ultimate happiness. Then the Buddhist perspective about the material world, mental world, and suffering and happiness is investigated. Findings of this research show that the Buddhist perspective of the world is different from others in relation to human happiness and suffering. According to Buddhism one cannot gain ultimate happiness just by trying to increase the happiness gained through by satisfying the senses with material world. One can achieve ultimate happiness within this life by following the Noble Eight Fold Path, as shown by the Buddha; in order to understand the reality of world by developing one’s own wisdom. iii Acknowledgement First of all I would like to express my sincere thanks to Dr. Upali Sedere, Rector, Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (SIBA), for accepting me as a Ph.D. student and giving this opportunity.     ABOUT THE BOOK Kensho is the Zen experience of waking up to one’s own true nature—of understanding oneself to be not different from the Buddha-nature that pervades all existence. The Japanese Zen Master Hakuin (1689–1769) considered the experience to be essential. In his autobiography he says: “Anyone who would call himself a member of the Zen family must first achieve kensho- realization of the Buddha’s way. If a person who has not achieved kensho says he is a follower of Zen, he is an outrageous fraud. A swindler pure and simple.” Hakuin’s short text on kensho, “Four Ways of Knowing of an Awakened Person,” is a little-known Zen classic. The “four ways” he describes include the way of knowing of the Great Perfect Mirror, the way of knowing equality, the way of knowing by differentiation, and the way of the perfection of action. Rather than simply being methods for “checking” for enlightenment in oneself, these ways ultimately exemplify Zen practice. Albert Low has provided careful, line-by-line commentary for the text that illuminates its profound wisdom and makes it an inspiration for deeper spiritual practice. ALBERT LOW holds degrees in philosophy and psychology, and was for many years a management consultant, lecturing widely on organizational dynamics. He studied Zen under Roshi Philip Kapleau, author of The Three Pillars of Zen, receiving transmission as a teacher in 1986. He is currently director and guiding teacher of the Montreal Zen Centre. He is the author of several books, including Zen and Creative Management and The Iron Cow of Zen.

    Buddhist teachings and racial and social justice: similar paths to peace Gomez MB Buddhist teachings and racial and social justice: similar paths to peace This discussion will summarize the direct ways Buddhist teachings, like social justice work, seek to investigate the way we construct and perceive the world in order to relieve the suffering of the world or achieve peace. It will review the teachings of the four noble truths, dependent origination, fabrications, and mindfulness as paths that can be used not only for relieving individual suffering but provide a framework for the path away from social injustice. Various non-Buddhist activists’ actions of love, non-harming, and non-violence-major Buddhist teachings- are presented as an example of how Buddhist teachings have been informing social justice work for years. This review brings together these concepts and practices in one short and summary reading to remind us how Buddhist teachings and social justice provide us the tools to understand injustices so as to arrive at peace in ourselves and the world. Brooke Schedneck PhD Candidate, Arizona State University SCHOLARSHIP CONCERNING BUDDHISM in America, since the late 1970s, has produced a series of monographs and edited volumes. Buddhist studies scholarship from other non-Buddhist regions has emerged in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and England, each generat- ing one to a handful of scholarly works. Canadian Buddhist scholarship is now poised to take the lead in conversations about global Buddhism. Scholars of Buddhism in Canada are aware of the newness of their work and have taken steps to continue their efforts through a number of venues. One of these steps is the recent edited volume, Wild Geese: Buddhism in Canada. This book makes a significant contribution toward creating and developing ideas on Buddhism in Canada and is related to other efforts such as national conferences and panels dedicated to the topic. Indeed, ideas for this book sprang from two sessions on Buddhism in Canada at the Canadian Asian Studies Association annual conference (CASA) in 2006. Thus this book is part of a larger effort to increase awareness of this sub-field of Buddhist studies as it has devel- oped and continues to develop in this multicultural land. But the edi- tors are only beginning in their creation of this scholarly niche—they have more conferences and volumes planned.
