Accommodating ten comfortably, there is plenty of space for families and groups to relax by the pool and watch the days fly by. The walk-in wardrobe has more than enough room for luggage, so there is no need to pack light. Also upstairs are the twin and double rooms, each with large wardrobes and a shared balcony to enjoy the view. Finally, a family bathroom with a bath and shower is perfect for a relaxing. Chania International Airport is conveniently situated just thirty-five minutes away.     CRETE RE-VISITED 2012 ANDREW AND BRIAN RETURN AT LAST! Well after 4 years we finally made the decision to have a holiday back on our wonderful dream Island. Was it all that we had hoped for? OH YES! Flying Easy Jet from Gatwick (and they were brilliant) we were met at Chania by Natasha. Familiar roads and corners. Terrible Greek driving, Traffic Lights that are phased wrongly. Confusion at Souda. Yes we were back. Nothing had changed, apart, that is, from the number of shops that were boarded up. Now that was a shock! We had heard and seen the problems Greece was going through but reality is another thing. Chania, as we found out later in the week, is prosperous and full of life. We both remembered Cretans saying they were “self sufficient:” and Tourism was the icing on the cake” Well it seems to be true, we both really hope it is. Crete is so very different from the rest of Greece and long may it stay so. Anyway………………………… Our first day was spent on our favourite beach in Georgiopoli. Peace and tranquillity and a very enticing sea. The owner recognised us as did the Taverna Manager. It was as though time had stood still. We hired a car at an incredible rate for the whole week and that night went to Almyrida for a meal, again in one of our favourites Eroticrito. Having met up with Clare, a life long friend from our Canal days, we had a really great evening. It was amazing that so many locals came over to speak, many thinking we were both back for good.

This change in climate is expected to increase flood wave speed and its flood wave area extent. A case study of a small basin in the island of Crete was conducted to examine this effect, following the calibration and validation of the flow hydrograph of a flash flood event, in order to achieve model verification with the post-flood data. It was found that the most important parameters that affect the timing and magnitude of the peak discharge are the storage coefficient, the impervious rate and the curve number, as well as the time of concentration. Rainfall distribution was examined in different time intervals in order to study the effect of the intensity of precipitation on the peak hydrograph. From the precipitation records and according to the size of the watershed, the time step of the precipitation in the simulation model is recommended to be less than an hour. In other areas around the basin of interest, severe storms known as Medicanes that pass over Crete can produce higher precipitation in shorter time intervals. The impact of climate change scenarios results in an increase on the peak discharge by creating precipitation of higher intensity.

    CRETE – AGII APOSTOLI While we were waiting for cataract surgery for Anne Berit, we found out that we would shorten the waiting time by 'jumping' on a trip to the South of Europe. She has a very bad eye sight, so I had to lead her down and up the stairs and read the menus at the restaurants, but we wanted to travel anyway. We found a trip that went from Thursday 3 May to Thursday 10 May. We booked it a couple of days before the trip went, so we got it for half the normal price. The trip we chose was with Apollo, one of the Nordic region's leading tour operators with around 500 employees and one million travelers a year. We flew with Novair, which is Apollos own airline. It was founded in 1997. Due to the fact that the plane from Gardermoen had a departure time at 07.20, we chose to stay overnight at a hotel near the airport so that we did not need to get up at the middle of the night at Kongsvinger to drive to the airport. In such cases, we have usually stayed at the Radisson Blu Hotel, which is within walking distance of the airport terminal. We think it is convenient to walk from the hotel in the morning, directly to the departure terminal. When we tried to book there, it was fully booked. We also tried the Park Inn Hotel, which is also within walking distance, but it was also fully booked. The choice finally ended at Clarion Hotel® & Congress Oslo Airport.

It's getting chilly in the evenings and here there is fire in an open fireplace. The restaurant is called Psaros. Link 1 link 2 link 3. They have decent food and locals go here. Most other restaurants here are closed and it seems that it is just this which is open all winter. In addition, only a cafe and a bar is open. Anne Berit had chicken in sweet and sour sauce. I had lamb chops. On December the 24th, we went for a little walk to look at a house that someone we know on Roa has built up in the hills above of Almyrida. There was also a Christmas tree. Nice house with pool. They call it Villa Methea. Nice view of Almyrida. On the way back we passed this garden where it was flowering like the middle of summer in Norway. On December the 25th, we went for a walk on the little headland north of Plaka. It looks like there are some building remains down there. The next day we went for a slightly different round where we came down to the formation that we saw the day before. Results of the climate change model’s precipitation data for the period 1970–2100 show a decreasing trend of daily precipitation but of higher intensity. Post-flood field investigation from a severe rainfall event in a small ungauged basin located in northwest Crete produced a validated flow hydrograph, and in combination with two high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs), were used in the 1D/2D HEC-RAS (Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System model), in order to determine the flooded area extent. Lateral structures were designed along the stream’s overbanks, hydraulically connecting the 1D streamflow with the 2D flow areas behind levees. Manning’s roughness coefficient and the weir coefficient were the most crucial parameters in the estimation of floodplain extent. The combined 1D/2D hydraulic model provides more detailed results than the 1D model with regards to the floodplain extent at the peak outflow, maximum flood depths, and wave velocities.
