    CRETE RE-VISITED 2012 ANDREW AND BRIAN RETURN AT LAST! Well after 4 years we finally made the decision to have a holiday back on our wonderful dream Island. Was it all that we had hoped for? OH YES! Flying Easy Jet from Gatwick (and they were brilliant) we were met at Chania by Natasha. Familiar roads and corners. Terrible Greek driving, Traffic Lights that are phased wrongly. Confusion at Souda. Yes we were back. Nothing had changed, apart, that is, from the number of shops that were boarded up. Now that was a shock! We had heard and seen the problems Greece was going through but reality is another thing. Chania, as we found out later in the week, is prosperous and full of life. We both remembered Cretans saying they were “self sufficient:” and Tourism was the icing on the cake” Well it seems to be true, we both really hope it is. Crete is so very different from the rest of Greece and long may it stay so. Anyway………………………… Our first day was spent on our favourite beach in Georgiopoli. Peace and tranquillity and a very enticing sea. The owner recognised us as did the Taverna Manager. It was as though time had stood still. We hired a car at an incredible rate for the whole week and that night went to Almyrida for a meal, again in one of our favourites Eroticrito. Having met up with Clare, a life long friend from our Canal days, we had a really great evening. It was amazing that so many locals came over to speak, many thinking we were both back for good.

Welcome in the name of the Risen Christ to the Anglican Church of St Thomas the Apostle, in the village of Kefalas, on the island of Crete. We are a congregation or “chaplaincy” of the Diocese in Europe, a part of the Church of England, one of several in Greece. Through our bishops we are part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, a network of some forty autonomous churches around the world. In this congregation we are a gathering of many nationalities – mostly British, Canadian, American, and Irish, but we are also from across Europe and beyond. We normally celebrate The Lord’s Supper, which is also known as Holy Communion, Holy Eucharist, the Mass, the Breaking of the Bread, and the Holy Liturgy. In it we read scripture and reflect on it, bring our concerns to God in prayer, and celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus just as he commanded his disciples in the Last Supper. The Church of England practices an open table. All who are baptised and take communion in their home church are welcome to receive at this, the Lord’s Table. We offer both the consecrated bread and wine. One may take both, or one or the other. We respectfully ask that you do not intinct (dip) the bread in the wine, as it has been determined that this is not the most hygienic.

This change in climate is expected to increase flood wave speed and its flood wave area extent. A case study of a small basin in the island of Crete was conducted to examine this effect, following the calibration and validation of the flow hydrograph of a flash flood event, in order to achieve model verification with the post-flood data. It was found that the most important parameters that affect the timing and magnitude of the peak discharge are the storage coefficient, the impervious rate and the curve number, as well as the time of concentration. Rainfall distribution was examined in different time intervals in order to study the effect of the intensity of precipitation on the peak hydrograph. From the precipitation records and according to the size of the watershed, the time step of the precipitation in the simulation model is recommended to be less than an hour. In other areas around the basin of interest, severe storms known as Medicanes that pass over Crete can produce higher precipitation in shorter time intervals. The impact of climate change scenarios results in an increase on the peak discharge by creating precipitation of higher intensity.

A list of 291 ant species recorded from Greece are given but approximately 15% of taxa need confirmation due to recent studies on European ants and reinterpretation of several taxa. The following 17 species are recorded from Greece for the first time:Camponotus sannini TOHMÉ & TOHMÉ, Crematogaster jehovae FOREL, Formica bruni KUTTER, Lasius jensi SEIFERT, Lasius nitidigaster SEIFERT, Lepisiota dolabellae (FOREL), Myrmica lonae FINZI, Myrmica tulinae ELMES, RADCHENKO & AKTAÇ, Temnothorax flavicornis (EMERY), Temnothorax sordidulus (MÜLLER), Temnothorax turcicus (SANTSCHI), Tetramorium hungaricum RÖSZLER, and five species not attributed to a named species:Camponotus cf. lateralis sp. 1, Camponotus cf. lateralis sp. 2, Lepisiota cf. melas sp. 1, Lepisiota cf. syriaca sp. 1, and Tetramorium cf. caespitum sp. 1. Camponotus candiotes is recorded as new species to Croatia. New faunistic data for 132 other species are given. Key words: entomology, zoogeography, catalogue, ants, Greece. INTroDUCTIoN The history of knowledge of Greek ants goes back to the early 19th century (BRUllÉ 1833) but due to the complicated history of Greece, for many years the ant fauna of the country was studied less intensively and by foreign entomologists. No regional monograph was published and the first key concerning also Greek fauna and the first checklist were papers by AGOSTI and COLLINGWOOD (1987 a, b).
