The department is responsible for the formation of company’s marketing strategy as well as design of various promotional and advertising materials or activities, including participation in numerous domestic and international trade shows. From the very beginning, Hellenic Homes set as part of its de- velopment strategy the formation of a formidable Design depart- ment within the company. Its activities extend beyond designing and overseeing the company’s projects and extend to the crea- tion of various stand alone design studies for various third party investments, including the Government subsidised ones. The department is manned by architects, civil engineers, de- signers and interior decorators, as well as necessary support personnel.     CRETE RE-VISITED 2012 ANDREW AND BRIAN RETURN AT LAST! Well after 4 years we finally made the decision to have a holiday back on our wonderful dream Island. Was it all that we had hoped for? OH YES! Flying Easy Jet from Gatwick (and they were brilliant) we were met at Chania by Natasha. Familiar roads and corners. Terrible Greek driving, Traffic Lights that are phased wrongly. Confusion at Souda. Yes we were back. Nothing had changed, apart, that is, from the number of shops that were boarded up. Now that was a shock! We had heard and seen the problems Greece was going through but reality is another thing. Chania, as we found out later in the week, is prosperous and full of life. We both remembered Cretans saying they were “self sufficient:” and Tourism was the icing on the cake” Well it seems to be true, we both really hope it is. Crete is so very different from the rest of Greece and long may it stay so. Anyway………………………… Our first day was spent on our favourite beach in Georgiopoli. Peace and tranquillity and a very enticing sea. The owner recognised us as did the Taverna Manager. It was as though time had stood still. We hired a car at an incredible rate for the whole week and that night went to Almyrida for a meal, again in one of our favourites Eroticrito. Having met up with Clare, a life long friend from our Canal days, we had a really great evening. It was amazing that so many locals came over to speak, many thinking we were both back for good.

    3: CANEA AND SUDA CHAPTER 3 CANEA AND SUDA1 Foundation of Canea Canea was founded by the Venetians to keep the Greeks in subjection in the middle of the 13th century. Pashley quotes an interesting passage recording this from the entry for the year 1252 from a manuscript Cronaca Veneziana:i “The Greeks of the island of Candia have always been badly disposed towards the Venetian Government, not content to dwell under it. With this knowledge the Venetian Government planned to found a city between Candia and Retimo2 and in this way the site of Canea was made a city, and many men of noble birth were sent to dwell there on the terms on which the rest of the men of noble birth were sent to Candia.” The error of the chronicler as to the position of Canea is curious. Canea Siege Canea is still surrounded to some extent by its Venetian fortifications, though the gates have disappeared since the Turk left and especially on the south the wall has been sadly diminished and is still more threatened. Their historic charm is antipathetic to the Greek. The best stretch of walls is that to the west of the town, which is in general form an oblong, with the two short sides on the east and west, one long side to the north along the sea and the other to the south where the gate stood; this side has been much destroyed and on the site of a part of the wall a large market erected, doubtless more sanitary than the old bazaars, but of a painful ugliness.3 But it was these walls which sustained the siege of 1645 when the Turks took the town after attacking it for [60] days and thus got their first footing in the island, after the preliminary occupation of the island of Saint Theodore.

This change in climate is expected to increase flood wave speed and its flood wave area extent. A case study of a small basin in the island of Crete was conducted to examine this effect, following the calibration and validation of the flow hydrograph of a flash flood event, in order to achieve model verification with the post-flood data. It was found that the most important parameters that affect the timing and magnitude of the peak discharge are the storage coefficient, the impervious rate and the curve number, as well as the time of concentration. Rainfall distribution was examined in different time intervals in order to study the effect of the intensity of precipitation on the peak hydrograph. From the precipitation records and according to the size of the watershed, the time step of the precipitation in the simulation model is recommended to be less than an hour. In other areas around the basin of interest, severe storms known as Medicanes that pass over Crete can produce higher precipitation in shorter time intervals. The impact of climate change scenarios results in an increase on the peak discharge by creating precipitation of higher intensity.
