Walking is a fairly complicated affair! Hardly does one ever consider how complex taking one step is until one watches a child take her first steps. As it turns out, the art of walking, taking more than one step while remaining upright requires that one foot is forever implanted on the ground, keeping us grounded in the familiar, while the other takes a leap, into the unknown, all the while maintaining balance to keep upright! For End Child Poverty, this last year presents precisely such endeavor, taking accelerated steps, pushing our boundaries and comfort zones while making sure to remain grounded and focused on our founding objective to end child poverty.

  • A Film by Jeremy Gilley (2008)
UNRIC Brussels would like to welcome you to a Special Edition of CINE ONU celebrating UN Day A film by Jeremy Gilley (2008) Synopsis Jeremy Gilley was an actor before he founded Peace One Day in 1999. He had become disillusioned with his work, but understood the potential of film to positively affect people and create change in the world. So when he set out on his near impossible mission in 1999, he took a camera with him. Every journey made, every country visited and every person met – he got it all on camera. Ten years on, The Day After Peace is his story – the story of Peace One Day. © PeaceOneDay The Day After Peace charts the remarkable 10- year journey of award-winning filmmaker Jeremy Gilley to establish an annual Peace Day on 21 September. The camera follows Jeremy as he galvanises the countries of the world to recognise an official day of ceasefire and non-violence. But even after the member states of the UN unanimously adopt Peace Day, the struggle isn’t over. As the years pass, there’s not a single ceasefire. The voices of the cynics are growing louder, but Jeremy can’t let it fail. The film’s breathtaking conclusion finds Gilley joined by Jude Law in Afghanistan attempting to spearhead a massive vaccination against polio on Peace Day. Will peace prevail? Will lives be saved? Or were the cynics right? The Day After Peace is a moving testament to the power of the individual and the perseverance of the human spirit. "We must make every effort for the promotion of peace and inner values.

Peace One Day, Promethean and British Council Introduce “The Peace Conversation” to Educate Pupils about Peace Historic collaboration aims to educate pupils about peace and sustainability through new classroom activities, debate and international dialogue. 10 September 2013 – London, UK – An announcement by three leading UK education leaders – British Council, Peace One Day and Promethean – will set the stage for Peace Day, which is scheduled for 21 September 2013. This joint effort seeks to advance the mission of Peace One Day to create a more peaceful and sustainable world. The collaboration joins Promethean Planet’s 1.7 million educators and the British Council’s international network of 40,000 schools with Peace One Day efforts to launch the largest worldwide peace conversation. Jeremy Gilley, founder of Peace One Day, acknowledges this incredible opportunity by stressing, “We want young people to truly become the driving force behind the vision of a united and sustainable world. Joining forces with Promethean and the British Council throws the doors wide open for a much larger conversation. We are thrilled by the opportunity to make this September 21st the biggest Peace Day in history.” In order to achieve this, an international class activity for ages 11-18 has been developed that combines technology, purpose and connectivity. The activity will kick off with a 21-question survey seeking opinions from young people; their responses will support “The Peace Conversation” in classrooms. The activity will be promoted internationally through the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms project, a global education programme, which offers funding and resources for institutions, teachers and students, and connects the UK to schools in more than fifty countries around the world.

10th Lesson READ THIS ARTICLE ON PEACE, THEN DO ACTIVITIES. PEACE ONE DAY: ONE MAN'S DREAM Can one ordinary person persuade world leaders to stop war ? That was the dream of the young British film-maker , Jeremy Gilley. He wanted the United Nations (UN) to create an annual international day of peace. For one day he wanted to stop all the guns in the world-a global ceasefire. What did he do? It wasn't easy- he spent all his time campaigning. In 1999 he created the organization Peace One Day(POD). At first no one wanted to listen, but Gilley is a great communicator. He travelled all over the world and went to war zones, including the Middle East. He made a short film about his idea and showed it to the world leaders. Eventually he got the support of many people including Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama and organizations such as the Arab League . And celebrities such as David Beckham, Angelina Jolie, Jade Law and Mohanned Alì. It was a difficult two years .Jeremy had lots of problems, but in 2001,after many meetings ,he won the support of the UN. They decided to make 21st September an International Day of Peace- a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. He also wanted to communicate his message to ordinary people all over the world. On his journey he met thousands of school children ,students and victims of war. He showed them his first documentary, Peace One Day, and gave talks. People fall ill in war zones because it's too dangerous for doctors and nurses to go there.

  • Peace One Day Overview
Peace One Day Overview Jeremy Gilley is an actor turned filmmaker, who in the late 1990’s became preoccupied with questions about the fundamental nature of humanity and the issue of peace. He decided to explore these through the medium of film, and specifically, to create a documentary following his campaign to establish an annual day of ceasefire and non-violence. In 1999, Jeremy founded Peace One Day, a non-profit organisation, and in 2001 Peace One Day’s efforts were rewarded when the member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the first ever day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September annually – Peace Day. In 2009, millions of people were active on Peace Day, in all 192 UN member states. There were life-saving activities focused on Peace Day in 18 countries and in Afghanistan, a drive to immunize some of the countries hardest to reach areas such as Kandahar, Uruzgan and Helmand against polio, vaccinated almost 1.2 million children. Peace One Day has been instrumental in helping to secure the conditions in which safe polio vaccinations could take place in Afghanistan. As a result, over 4 million children have been vaccinated in the region following Peace Day agreements in 2007/8/9. Peace One Day is working to manifest an annual day of global unity; a day of intercultural cooperation on a scale that humanity has never known. The next stepping stone on this journey is to reach 3 billion people with the message of Peace Day by 2012; this will be achieved by working in the following areas: Documentary Films: The first Peace One Day documentary has become a key tool in raising awareness of Peace Day, having played all over the world to millions of people.
