Walking is a fairly complicated affair! Hardly does one ever consider how complex taking one step is until one watches a child take her first steps. As it turns out, the art of walking, taking more than one step while remaining upright requires that one foot is forever implanted on the ground, keeping us grounded in the familiar, while the other takes a leap, into the unknown, all the while maintaining balance to keep upright! For End Child Poverty, this last year presents precisely such endeavor, taking accelerated steps, pushing our boundaries and comfort zones while making sure to remain grounded and focused on our founding objective to end child poverty. -
A Film by Jeremy Gilley (2008)
UNRIC Brussels would like to welcome you to a Special Edition of CINE ONU celebrating UN Day A film by Jeremy Gilley (2008) Synopsis Jeremy Gilley was an actor before he founded Peace One Day in 1999. He had become disillusioned with his work, but understood the potential of film to positively affect people and create change in the world. So when he set out on his near impossible mission in 1999, he took a camera with him. Every journey made, every country visited and every person met – he got it all on camera. Ten years on, The Day After Peace is his story – the story of Peace One Day. © PeaceOneDay The Day After Peace charts the remarkable 10- year journey of award-winning filmmaker Jeremy Gilley to establish an annual Peace Day on 21 September. The camera follows Jeremy as he galvanises the countries of the world to recognise an official day of ceasefire and non-violence. But even after the member states of the UN unanimously adopt Peace Day, the struggle isn’t over. As the years pass, there’s not a single ceasefire. The voices of the cynics are growing louder, but Jeremy can’t let it fail. The film’s breathtaking conclusion finds Gilley joined by Jude Law in Afghanistan attempting to spearhead a massive vaccination against polio on Peace Day. Will peace prevail? Will lives be saved? Or were the cynics right? The Day After Peace is a moving testament to the power of the individual and the perseverance of the human spirit. "We must make every effort for the promotion of peace and inner values. -

Top Pick Wednesday 21 March 9.00Pm
1 Top Pick Wednesday 21 March 9.00pm Sando Victoria ‘Sando’ Sandringham (Sasha Horler) is the charismatic loose cannon CEO, and public face of, beloved department store chain ‘Sando’s Warehouse’. Australia knows Sando as the larrikin ‘Package Deal Queen’, a born performer who for decades starred alongside her young family in their own furniture commercials. But things began to unravel for Sando the day of her daughter Susie’s wedding, when it is revealed that following a drunken night at a family weekend away, she became pregnant to Susie’s fiancé, Kevin (Firass Dirani), and was excommunicated from the family. Ten years later we catch up with Sando, freshly removed from her own company by her nemesis company CFO Tony (Rob Carlton), following one too many all-night benders. Her assets frozen and with nowhere else to go, Sando realises she must reconnect with her family if she’s to have any chance of rekindling the halcyon days. While granddaughter Rian (Sierra Lewis) is easily won over – as is son Eric (Dylan Hesp) for whom the parental flame was never extinguished - daughter Susie (Krew Boylan) has a much larger axe to grind. Even though she’s now happily married to dependable Gary (Uli Latukefu), Susie has never forgiven Sando and doesn’t intend to now that she’s back. Fearing another banishment, Sando fakes a stroke in order to buy a few crucial days to convalesce in the family’s pool house. Then, by blackmailing her ex-husband Don (Phil Lloyd) and Susie’s best friend and live-in life coach Nicky (Adele Vuko), Sando manages to further extend her stay. -

Program Peace Week 2009 The Organization of American States The Organization of American States (OAS) brings together the 35 nations of the Western Hemisphere to strengthen peace and security, enhance cooperation on democratic values, defend common interests and debate the major issues facing the region and the world. The OAS is the region’s principal multilateral forum for strengthening democracy, promoting human rights, and confronting shared problems such as poverty, terrorism, illegal drugs and corruption. It plays a leading role in carrying out mandates established by the hemisphere’s leaders through the Summits of the Americas. Peace Fund Strengthening peace and security, preventing conflicts, and resolving disputes are among the essential purposes of the OAS, as established in its founding Charter. The Fund for Peace in the Secretariat for Political Affairs – Department of Democratic Sustainability and Special Missions – is an essential tool available to the OAS Member States for these purposes. Vlaho Bukovac and My Search for His Paintings in England
VLAHO BUKOVAC AND MY SEARCH FOR HIS PAINTINGS IN ENGLAND It was in the late 1980s, after I had read the delightful autobiography by the painter Vlaho Bukovac, 1855 – 1922, published in Zagreb in 1918, that I realised that this important Croatian artist had found “home from home” in North Yorkshire, just as I had done in the small town of Bedale, my late husband's family home. Harrogate, where Samson Fox, 1838 – 1903, one of Vlaho's most important collectors in England lived, was only a matter of miles away from Bedale, a drive of less than an hour. Harrogate was then, and still is today, a lively spa town, where people came to drink sulphur waters for their health, to spend a holiday, to enjoy themselves, to make friends, to see exhibitions and to go to the theatre. The famous Royal Pump Room, now a museum, was a place to meet. Samson Fox, the ancestor of the present day well known acting family, Edward, Robert, James, Emilia Fox, to mention just a few, was a self-made engineer and a clever business man, who had invented an important part for the engines of steamships and had thus become very wealthy himself. He had been elected three times the Mayor of Harrogate, never repeated since, owing to his good works and generosity to many causes. His bust, by Prince Victor von Hohenlohe-Langenborg, still graces the corridors of the Royal College of Music in London. Fox had donated £45,000, a very large amount at the time, for the building of the College in 1894. -
