A common assertion is that heavy consumption of turkey meat results in drowsiness, due to high levels of tryptophan contained in turkey. However, the amount of tryptophan in turkey is comparable to that contained in most other meats. Furthermore, post-meal drowsiness may have more to do with what else is consumed along with the turkey and, in particular, carbohydrates. It has been demonstrated in both animal models, and humans that ingestion of a meal rich in carbohydrates triggers release of insulin. Insulin in turn stimulates the uptake of large neutral branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), but not tryptophan (an aromatic amino acid) into muscle, increasing the ratio of tryptophan to BCAA in the blood stream. The resulting increased ratio of tryptophan to BCAA in the blood re- duces competition at the large neutral amino acid transporter (which transports both BCAA and aromatic amino acids), resulting in the uptake of tryptophan across the blood–brain barrier into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Once in the CSF, tryptophan is converted into serotonin in the raphe nuclei by the normal enzymatic pathway. The resultant serotonin is further metabolised into melatonin by the pineal gland. Hence, this data suggests that "feast-induced drowsiness"— or postprandial somnolence — may be the result of a heavy meal rich in carbohy- drates, which, via an indirect mechanism, increases the production of sleep-promoting melatonin in the brain. Pictured, from left, are Tim and Bunnie Woodruff, parents; Tori Woodruff; Jay Stiteley, division manager for the Mayor’s Of- fice for People with Disabilities; Annise Parker, Houston mayor; and Zella Woodruff, grandmother. Oct. 29, 2014—City of Houston Mayor Annise Parker presented Jersey Village High School junior Tori Woodruff with the Mayor’s Disability Advocate of the Year Award in the youth category during the city council meeting at Houston City Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Woodruff was recognized for the award after being nominated by Natalie Rodriguez, whose son has benefited from Woodruff’s volun- teer work with The Arc of Greater Houston—a local nonprofit that provides support and services to individuals with disabilities. Woodruff has worked with people with disabilities since the age of 6 in various capacities—annual summer camps, day camps, the an- nual weekend fall camp at Camp For All, monthly Adventure Clubs outings, monthly dances, babysitting, the LIFE Skills Buddy program and weekend community excursions with her family. While at school, she continues to visit and interact with LIFE Skills students be- fore and after school, and assists PPCD, LIFE Skills and at-risk students on the bus and day care vans. Her older brother, Trey Woodruff, a 2009 Jersey Village graduate, won the same award in October 2008. Her mother, Bunnie Woodruff, a 33-year teaching veteran in CFISD, said she and her husband, Tim, have always taught their children to treat everyone as equals. “Everybody is a person and everybody has a heart,” said Bunnie, a Bang Elementary School P.E. teacher. “Everybody wants to be loved, and our kids have always been active in providing that for people with disabilities.” Bunnie said the mayor’s award came as a surprise to Tori, who was only told that she was a finalist while her family traveled to City Hall on Oct. 28. “She was surprised; she said she didn’t realize it until she saw her name on the plaque,” Bunnie said. “It was breathtaking to see her honored for this. She really has a heart of gold, especially for people with disabilities.” Houston Mayor Annise Parker presents Jersey Houston Mayor Annise Parker congratulates Village junior Tori Woodruff with the Mayor’s Jersey Village junior Tori Woodruff Disability Advocate of the Year Award. for wining the annual honor. 2014 SUN MON TUES WED THURS FRI SAT 1 Anya Morrow 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Campbell DEAN Campbell Campbell **DEAN** JR/SR4:45‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 White 4:45‐6:15 White 4:45‐6:15 White 4:45‐6:15 White 4:45‐6:15 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stars 6:00 – 6:30 NO STRIPES Stars 6:00 – 6:30 Stars 6:00 – 6:30 Stars 6:00 – 6:30 6:30 – 7:00 6:30 – 7:00 6:30 – 7:00 6:30 – 7:00 NO STRIPES Coach Amanda Grace Trautwein 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 Campbell DEAN Campbell Campbell Campbell JR/SR4:45‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 LSST hosted meet Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 @ WW Emmons White 4:45‐6:15 White 4:45‐6:15 White 4:45‐6:15 White 4:45‐6:15 Natatorium— Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 10404 Tiger Trail Stars 6:00 – 6:30 NO STRIPES Stars 6:00 – 6:30 Stars 6:00 – 6:30 Stars 6:00 – 6:30 (Spring Woods HS) 6:30 – 7:00 6:30 – 7:00 6:30 – 7:00 6:30 – 7:00 Phi Huynh NO STRIPES Zayne Janoschak Emma Sailors 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 Campbell DEAN Campbell Campbell Campbell JR/SR4:45‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 JR/SR4:45‐7:00 LSST hosted meet Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 @ WW Emmons Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 White 4:45‐6:15 Natatorium — White 4:45‐6:15 White 4:45‐6:15 White 4:45‐6:15 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 10404 Tiger Trail Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stars 6:00 – 6:30 (Spring Woods HS) Stars 6:00 – 6:30 NO STRIPES Stars 6:00 – 6:30 6:30 – 7:00 Stars 6:00 – 6:30 6:30 – 7:00 6:30 – 7:00 NO STRIPES 6:30 – 7:00 Nicholas Nguyen Michael Bui Amber Williams 23 / 30 24 25 26 27 28 29 Campbell DEAN JR/SR4:45‐7:00 JR/SR4:45 ‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Blue 4:45‐7:00 Red 4:45‐6:30 Red 4:45‐6:30 White 4:45‐6:15 Stripes 4:45 – 6:00 Stars 6:00 – 6:30 NO STRIPES 6:30 – 7:00 Joseph Nguyen .
