This dissertation uses feminist poststructural theory and Foucauldian discourse analysis to problematize the belief that workplace bullying is the result of individual personality flaws, skill deficits, or psychopathology in the abuser or in the target, and to trouble the individualization of a serious social problem which has resulted in victim blaming, and turning the focus of public attention away from the consequences of gender and race. This dissertation analyzes research texts based on transcriptions of open interviews with five women who have experienced abuse by other women in the workplace, in order to illuminate the cultural discourses and humanist discursive practices that shape the women’s constructions of self and others, and their assumptions about the world. It uses discourse analysis to explain the role of discourse in the production of workplace hierarchy, gender and race; to show the construction of the subject positions made available to women; and to explore the complex configurations of power/knowledge facing women in the workplace. “Woman” is not a natural or an essentialist category. Woman is constituted in discourse. Using concepts from the work of Michel Foucault (biopower, surveillance, power/knowledge, and desire), this dissertation suggests that discourses of the good woman and the good worker offer women subject positions that are both desirable and painful, marked on the body, subject positions that sometimes conflict with each other and become impossible to reconcile. Disrupting the discourses that produce workplace bullying is complex and difficult work, because a woman’s culturally constructed desires i may keep her from resisting the “common sense” of the gendered discourses that surround her, and because she may accept and submit to discursive assumptions in order to survive. Poststructural theory, because it troubles the common sense of a vast research literature that presents bullying as individual pathology, and because it disrupts gender and racial binaries that allow for misogyny and racism, offers a new perspective on workplace bullying that can be used to help generate possibilities for change. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writing of a dissertation can be a lonely and isolating experience, yet it would be impossible without the support of many others. CYBERBULLIES ON CAMPUS Darby Dickerson * I. INTRODUCTION A new challenge facing educators is how to deal with the high-tech incivility that has crept onto our campuses. Technology has changed the way students approach learning, and has spawned new forms of rudeness. Students play computer games, check e-mail, watch DVDs, and participate in chat rooms during class. They answer ringing cell phones and dare to carry on conversations mid-lesson. Dealing with these types of incivilities is difficult enough, but another, more sinister e-culprit-the cyberbully-has also arrived on law school campuses. Cyberbullies exploit technology to control and intimidate others on campus.' They use web sites, blogs, and IMs2 to malign professors and classmates.3 They craft e-mails that are offensive, boorish, and cruel. They blast professors and administrators for grades given and policies passed; and, more often than not, they mix in hateful attacks on our character, motivations, physical attributes, and intellectual abilities.4 They disrupt classes, cause tension on campus, and interfere with our educational mission.

RACHEL MORRISON KENNEY MOBBING IN THE CONTEXT OF A WOMAN’S LIFE1 Trauma in Middle Age My conversations with Gertraud took place in 2009, in the peaceful, refined, so very civilized setting of her apartment in one of the tonier high-rise condos in Waterloo, Ontario. I had just moved into an apartment of my own, where I could scarcely see the floor for all the cardboard boxes still unpacked. This impeccably ordered display of European taste was in sharpest contrast to the half-assembled furnishings from big-box stores strewn about my dwelling. Nothing here hinted at the pain and loss that had marked this ninety-year-old woman’s life, much less the nadir in 1976, that I had come to talk to her about. Nor did her personal appearance. Petite, gracious, with honey-coloured hair and the kind of eyes that smile on their own, she wore a blouse with nary a wrinkle, and over it a delicate brooch. She was a picture of what used to be called “good breeding.” That first day, and all the other times we met, Gertraud carried herself with grace and no inkling of self- pity. Her manners, so I was to learn, were a clue to her deep appreciation for the preciousness of life. Farrington Published online: 16 September 2010 # Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2010 Abstract This article presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effectiveness of anti-bullying programs in schools. Studies were included if they evaluated the effects of an anti-bullying program by comparing an intervention group who received the program with a control group who did not. Four types of research design were included: a) randomized experiments, b) intervention-control comparisons with before-and-after measures of bullying, c) other intervention- control comparisons, and d) age-cohort designs. Both published and unpublished reports were included. All volumes of 35 journals from 1983 up to the end of May 2009 were hand-searched, as were 18 electronic databases. Reports in languages other than English were also included. A total of 622 reports concerned with bullying prevention were found, and 89 of these reports (describing 53 different program evaluations) were included in our review. Of the 53 different program evaluations, 44 provided data that permitted the calculation of an effect size for bullying or victimization. The meta-analysis of these 44 evaluations showed that, overall, school-based anti-bullying programs are effective: on average, bullying decreased by 20–23% and victimization decreased by 17–20%.
