1 Although placed in synonymy with P. gra!1_ulatum by several authors, these two species are nevertheless distinct and have a completely different geographic and ecologic range in the Recent. This distribution will be the subject of n forth eo ming paper by E. \V. Andrews (E. H. Vokes).

~ \ i\ihen this was originally named as a subspecies of M. anniae Smith there were no more than three specimens of L\l. anniae known to science, and the limit of variMion was uncertain. Since that time new dreclgings on the "Caloosabatchee Canal" west of Ortona Lock exposed thousands of specimens of true M. mliliae ancl it is now evident that M. bellegladeensis is a valid species. M. bellegladeensis also occurs in the Hecent fauna of the Gulf of Mexico from off Savannah, Geor gia, to Galveston, Texas, in water of about 25 to 40 fathoms depth. (E. H.
