  • Artist Biographies
ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES Richard Gill AO | Artistic Director & Conductor in March 2019 Australian conductor and educator, Richard Gill, one of Australia's best-known and best-loved musical figures, is a significant and vital key member of ARCO. His career has taken him from teaching music in Sydney's western suburbs to Music Director of the Victorian Opera, Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony Education Program, and along the way an involvement with almost every major opera company and orchestra in Australia. He is one of this country's pre-eminent conductors and a passionate advocate of music education. He specialises in opera, music theatre and vocal and choral training and his work in developing young musicians and creating opportunities for them is recognised world-wide. His appearances on the ABC’s “Spicks and Specks” and “Q&A” have made him a household name within and beyond Australia’s musical world. What truly distinguishes Richard is his passion and enthusiasm for spreading not just the joy of music, but its myriad benefits. He is Australia’s greatest musical educator, and many say one of the best in the world. His life's work - alongside his other roles - has been advocating music in our education system, and furthering the development of those who have gone on to choose music as a vocation. He brings music to life, and his knowledge and deep enjoyment of his subject is as inspiring and enlightening to a class of primary school students as it is to the cast of a major opera. The majority of Australia’s young contemporary professional musicians count Richard as a powerful influence on their musical development.

AUTUMN 2015 MUSICAL Wicked CABARET LA SOIRÉE SPECIAL EVENT Brisbane Baroque Celebrating three decades of storytelling Welcome Hello. 2015 is QPAC’s 30th anniversary and we invite you to celebrate this milestone with us. There is much on o er across our stages and outdoor venues, special programs that are the result of a number of wonderful partnerships with artists and companies we enjoyed collaborating with across three decades. One of the most rewarding things about creating art in Queensland is the responsive audiences who are keen to try new things. It goes without saying that you, our audiences, are critical to our work. The conversation that takes place between artists and audiences, in that space between the stage and auditorium is what makes live performance magical. It’s also why it is constantly changing. Feeling the energy in a room shift and respond to what is being played live in front of you is something that you have to be there to share in…there really is no substitute. Over the course of 30 years QPAC has become part of the fabric of the city and a touchstone in the lives of many of you, who saw your fi rst live performance here, graduated from university in the Concert Hall, or simply had an incredible night out here. I hope you feel QPAC belongs to your community and that you are able to join us in celebrating three decades of storytelling. Thank you. • Beethoven: Symphony No 9 “Choral” – Australian World Orchestra Posted on April 16, 2014 by Barry Walmsley
Beethoven: Symphony No 9 “Choral” – Australian World Orchestra Posted on April 16, 2014 by Barry Walmsley Australian World Orchestra Sydney Philharmonia Choir Conductor: Alexander Briger ABC 481 0550 The scale of a work such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is truly staggering. Whilst the work has been overused for civic celebratory events, the concert experience (and this recording, which originates from a live concert in the Sydney Opera House) is something that can touch listeners in profound ways. The complexity of the music is only equalled by its challenging compositional ideas, along with the treatment of text (by Schiller), and the fusion of what, for the most part, are incompatibles, that is, the choral and the symphonic idiom. Structurally, the work is really a set of variations, showing a total connection from beginning to end. These totally new elements (the unconventional symphonic layout and the use of words within a symphony) helped to underline, in the public’s mind, that Beethoven had truly gone mad. This particular recording emanated from one of the most exciting of recent concert events, the inaugural season by the newly created Australian World Orchestra, an initiative to bring together the finest of Australian orchestral musicians from around the country and across the world. Thus, it saw players return from such illustrious orchestras as the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, Chicago and London Symphonies, the Concertgebouw and Gewandhaus, to be part of this concept orchestra. Bringing the whole project together, as its artistic and musical director, was conductor Alexander Briger, who has established himself on the world stage as one of the new dynamic conductors of this era.

  • Project Tosca Overview
PROJECT TOSCA OVERVIEW Project Tosca is a large, ambitious project in which Opera Queensland will work with seven Queensland communities to find and train local performers for a 2020 tour of Tosca. Tosca is an opera by Giacomo Puccini, which premiered 120 years ago in Rome. The story follows the powerful Tosca, a famous opera singer who is devoted to the painter Cavaradossi but Scarpia, the tyrannical Chief of Police, has his own plans for her. What ensues is a gripping tale of lust, betrayal and cold-blooded murder that careens at breakneck pace. The production is set in 1970 Italy and takes a step back into a world of iconic style and lush glamour at a time of dramatic political and social change. Opera Queensland stars Antoinette Halloran, Rosario La Spina and José Carbó shine alongside the Company’s Principal Artists, Community Chorus and Queensland Symphony Orchestra Ensemble, conducted by Dane Lam. Aspiring performers from seven communities – Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Toowoomba and Gold Coast – will have the opportunity to audition for a coveted spot. During Project Tosca, around 400 successful applicants will participate in a program of free professional training in singing, stagecraft and Italian language skills before taking to the stage in their local theatres alongside Queensland’s best singers and with the support of an ensemble of musicians from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Auditions to find 40 adult and 16 children chorus members in each community will occur throughout March, April and May 2020, with Tosca regional tour commencing on Saturday 8 August in Cairns and closing at the Gold Coast on Saturday 29 August.
