mission- aries oliver cowdery peter whitmer jr parley P pratt and ziba peterson appeared in mentor ohio and introduced the restored gospel to one of the influential preachers of the western reserve elder sidney rigdon within one week these elders had not only preached in mentor euclid and kirtland but had created the nucleus of a branch of the church by bap- tizing seventeen in kirtland 1 moving from rigdon s home to the farm of isaac morley they continued to declare their faith in the community where they were enjoying their greatest suc- cess and on sunday 31 october the missionaries held another meeting in kirtland which was followed by the confirmation of a dozen newly baptized converts on the ensuing sunday 7 november about thirty additional settlers were confirmed at a meeting held iniriiry mayfield during the subsequent week they preached in warrensvilleWarrensville and other communities located near the small town of cleveland 2 on sunday 14 november sidney rigdon preached in but had also bap- tized approximately 130 settlers and had initiated a theologi- cal flame that was being fanned widely by the newspapers of the western reserve 3 when joseph smith arrived in kirtland on 1 february 1831 to direct the activities of the new con- verts the branch of the church in that community consisted of about one hundred members 4 the relative success of the four latter day saint missionaries in ohio appears most significant when compared to the previous growth of the church six months after the church had been organized membership was reported to be sixty two which was an increase of thirty five from the preceding con- ference held three and a half months earlier 5 although a number of converts baptized by traveling mormon elders were probably not counted in these membership figures the fact remains that about twice as many people were baptized in the kirtland area in one month as had been converted in other parts of the new nation during the first half year of the history of the restored church and the rapid growth continued in ohio after the missionaries resumed their journey to missouri 6 after learning of the significant increase in church mem- bership in ohio during the winter of 183018311830 1831 many ask why the conversions were so numerous in that section of ameri- ca why was the western reserve such a fruitful field ready to harvest at the group sometimes called 11 reformers who were not affiliated with any denomination but were seeking a return to new testament christianity the congregational church of kirtland was constituted in september 1819 after ten members united and endorsed a creed patterned after the westministerWestminister confession of faith which included the five points of calvinism total depravity of man unconditional election or predestination limited atone- ment irresistibility of grace man cannot reject the call and perseverance of the saints man cannot fall after meeting in the homes of the early settlers members of this society con- structedstructed a log meetinghouse in 1822 on the site of the present old south congregational church 7 after the arrival of the latter day saints in kirtland some members of this society sold their property to the new immi- grants and a few families moved to indiana there is no evi- dence however that many in this congregation were attracted to the restored gospel and their membership does not seem to have been seriously affected by the arrival of the saints in kirtland even though some congregationalists emigrated in the early 1830s the reduction in membership was offset in 1834 when fifty six were added to this society 8 approximately the same year that the congregationalists of kirtland united methodists commenced holding services and in about 1820 erected a small church building on the corner of the cemetery lot across the street from where the kirtland temple was constructed when originally consti- tuted the methodist society was included in the grand circuit which consisted of forty four preaching stations in ashtabula geaughgeauga and trumbull counties every four weeks a method- ist circuit rider preacher traveled about two hundred miles to visit the classes and congregations included in this vast circuit since records of this society have not been uncovered one cannot determine the numbers from this group who might been admitted into an alliance of closed communion calvinist baptist churches in 1828 called the grand river association and since there was no settled min- ister to serve the needs of these protestants for almost five years this group was irregularly supplied by visiting elders as- signed by that alliance 10 prior to the arrival of the four latter day saint missionaries in ohio the calvinist baptists of kirtland had rejected a view popularized by reforming preachers concerning the need to restore the everlasting gospel they had committed them- selves to the belief that their church creed was a proper ex- pression of faith and like most congregationalists and methodists of kirtland the baptists were not receptive to the message of the restoration between 1828 and 1834 their mem- bership remained almost the same fluctuating from twenty one to twentyfivetwenty five the only significant impact the introduction of mormonism seems to have had on this group is that it failed to grow after the saints established kirtland as one of the headquarters of the church in 1833 when elder rufus rider was serving as minister there were only twenty one be- longing to this congregation and in 1834 when there were twentyfivetwenty five members these baptists complained that their small church was struggling

BREKUS In the Second Great Awakening more than one hundred women crisscrossed the country as itinerant preachers, holding meetings in barns, schools, or outside in fields. They were the first group of women to speak publicly in America. Why have virtually all of them been forgotten? ome argued that she was “bold and shameless,” a disgrace to her fami- ly and to the evangelical movement. Others insisted that she was the S“instrument of God,” a humble woman who had given up everything for Christ. Few women in early nineteenth-century America provoked more admi- ration, criticism, and controversy than Harriet Livermore. She was the daughter of a congressman and the grand-daughter of a senator, but after an emotional conversion experience, she renounced her privileged life in order to become a female preacher. Reputed to be a gifted evangelist who was also a beautiful singer, she became so popular that she was allowed to preach in front of Congress four times between 1827 and 1844, each time to huge crowds. According to a Washington newspaper, more than a thousand people assembled in the Hall of Representatives to hear her preach in 1827, and hundreds more gathered outside to catch a glimpse of her. President John Quincy Adams had to sit on the steps leading up to her feet because he could not find a free chair. Harriet Livermore was the best-known female preacher of her day, but she was part of a larger community of evangelical women, both white and African-American, who claimed to have been divinely inspired to preach Female Preaching in Early Nineteenth-Century America 21 the gospel.

TUCK 2010 Abstract As the United States descended into war in 1861, the religious leaders of the nation were among the foremost advocates and recruiters for both the Confederate and Union forces. They exercised enormous influence over the laity, and used their sermons and periodicals to justify, promote, and condone the brutal fratricide. Although many historians have focused on the promoters of war, they have almost completely ignored the Disciples of Christ, a loosely organized religious movement based on anti-sectarianism and primitive Christianity, who used their pulpits and periodicals as a platform for peace. This study attempts to merge the remarkable story of the Disciples peace message into a narrative of the Civil War. Their plea for nonviolence was not an isolated event, but a component of a committed, biblically-based response to the outbreak of war from many of the most prominent leaders of the movement. Immersed in the patriotic calls for war, their stance was extremely unpopular and even viewed as traitorous in their communities and congregations. This study adds to the current Disciples historiography, which states that the issue of slavery and the Civil War divided the movement North and South, by arguing that the peace message professed by its major leaders divided the movement also within the sections.

Woods When John Butler first visited Commerce (later known as Nauvoo) he recalled, “I asked Brother Joseph what kind of a place it was. He said it was a low, marshy, wet, damp and nasty place, but that if we went to work and improved it, it would become more healthy and the Lord would bless it for our sakes.”1 The Prophet Joseph Smith also stated, “The name of our city (Nauvoo) is of Hebrew origin, and signifies a beautiful situation, or place, carrying with it, also, the idea of rest; and is truly descriptive of the most delightful situation. This place has been objected to by some, on account of the sickness which has prevailed in the summer months.” Yet Joseph expressed his hope that such sickness could be “remedied by draining the sloughs on the adjacent islands in the Mississippi.”2 The Saints did drain the swampy terrain of Nauvoo, but the call of death continued.

FAMILY STORIES: HANDLE WITH CARE, ESPECIALLY THE MOST DRAMATIC ONES WILLIAM G. HARTLEY Rare is the family story that does not get “better” as retold over time. A few families have in them characters who like to tell tall tales, or at least embellish information they relate about their parents or grandparents. Most often, however, misinformation gains currency unintentionally. People assume they have the story right, but in fact they misunderstood minor and sometimes major details. We need to record and treasure family stories that come to us, even though most are wheat with chaff. Folklorist Bert Wilson has shown us that repeatedly told family stories, be they true or false, convey a truth about what the family values. He suggests we ask why that story matters so much to the family that it continues to be told.1 But, as history students are taught early, we need to keep an attitude of skepticism about how accurate our sources of historical information are.

Imbler As the recently constituted nation was expanding beyond the settled northeast, in- formation on a variety of subjects was carried by an increasing number of newly estab- lished local presses. Presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin observes, “With few public entertainments in rural America (c. 1850s), villages and farmers regarded the spo- ken word and political debates as riveting spectator sports.” She continues, “Following such debates, the dueling remarks were regularly printed in their entirety in newspapers then reprinted in pamphlet form…where they provoked discourse over a wide space and prolonged time.”1 While her analysis refers to the general population, it also reflects the character of the Stone-Campbell people who were heavily invested in publications.
