She saw potential that I could not see, and she shepherded me to a fuller, more interesting understanding of the problems I was tackling. I thank her for working with me and challenging me to become a better writer, thinker, and teacher. I would especially like to thank my friend and mentor, Eileen A. Fradenburg Joy, who showed me what it means to be a human in the Humanities. She has expanded what I thought possible in our field of Medieval Studies, and has enlivened me to push boundaries and take risks in my work and in my life. I am happy to say that my answer to the question, “How many more years??” is finally: none. I owe a special thanks to my parents, Elaina and John Stangle; I cannot thank them enough for standing by me through successes and failures and loving me just the same. I especially thank my mother, Elaina, for being my most faithful advisor and for providing the undying love and support that it takes to complete a dissertation. I would also like to thank Anthony and Pamela McCants for their overwhelming support of this project. I thank them for their love, and for their faith in my work. In both sadness and love, I thank my recently departed uncle Thomas H. Forbes, to whom this dissertation is dedicated. He passed away on April 23, 2018, and was unable to see me complete this project. He is my intellectual hero; he taught me critical thinking and insisted on a passion for knowledge. I will miss our weekly phone calls. I thank my aunt Susan Mills for her undying support of my goals and her belief in my ability to complete this project. She inspires me. I also thank my late father, William D. Forbes, Jr., who always valued me and my education. And finally, I owe the deepest thanks to my partner, Kristen McCants.
