The Spitfire Grill Playbill AN UPLIFTING MUSICAL FOR A TROUBLED TIME When The Spitfire Grill opened off-Broadway in September, 2001, Americans were reeling from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. That was especially true for New Yorkers, who lived with daily reminders of the tragedy: smoke still rising from the trade center ruins; signs pasted on walls and light poles seeking information about lost loved ones; banks of flowers outside stations where firefighters had posted photos of fallen comrades. The Spitfire Grill, with its reaffirmation of American values and its message of hope, held out a bit of comfort during a most troubled time. “It is not often that material moves me to tears, but this was one of those occasions,” critic John Simon said in New York Magazine. “The Spitfire Grill has the heart and soul that your Producers and Full Montys cannot begin to approach. What even in normal times would be a joy is, in these troubled ones, sheer nourishment.” In Talkin Broadway, Matthew Murray wrote: “If after the events of recent weeks you need any reason at all to embrace life again, the musical you’ve been waiting for has arrived. The Spitfire Grill is one of the most heartfelt musicals of recent years, its homespun charms as inviting as a warm winter blanket.” And The Wall Street Journal’s Amy Gamerman said the musical “feels as if it has been transplanted to Times Square directly from an obscure patch of the American heartland. The longing for a place like Gilead, well removed from the big, troublesome world, is real enough – perhaps now more than ever. The show’s creators tap into that longing with unembarrassed directness.” In its own small way, The Spitfire Grill brought a bit of hope to those New Yorkers who spent an evening with the citizens of Gilead. Its message of hope and redemption is just as important a decade later as it was in 2001. COMING UP AT COLONIAL PLAYERS ★ Between now and summer, we will be wrapping up our 2011-12 year of quality theater with an engrossing drama, a madcap comedy and a smorgasbord of short plays that will make up our biennial summer One-Act Play Festival. ★ Information about Going to St. Ives, our May production, can be found elsewhere in this program. In June, we will wrap up the subscription season with Moonlight and Magnolias, a zany comedy about the writing of Gone with the Wind. With shooting about to begin, producer David O. Selznick abandons his script and brings in legendary author Ben Hecht to write a new one. Undaunted by the fact that Hecht hasn’t read the book. Selznick and director Victor Fleming act it out scene by scene while Hecht produces one of the greatest movie scripts of all time. ★ Plan to join us in July for something a little different, two evenings of short plays that will make you laugh, think and, perhaps, even ponder important and not-so-important questions about humanity. - 16 - MARCH 23 – APRIL 21, 2012 2O11/2O12 seAsON PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE PRODUCTION STAFF How appropriate that the musical you are about Director.........................................................................................................Joan Townshend to experience takes as its basic premise the notion Producer................................................................................................Mary Beth Yablonski that all of us, no matter what our past, deserve a Musical Director...........................................................................................Anita O’Connor home to find peace and happiness. • The Heritage Ensemble
For half a century, Northern Sky Theater and its predecessor troupe (the Heritage Ensemble) have passionately pursued a unique mission: to solely create and produce original shows illuminating American culture (especially that of the Upper Midwest). All productions have been book musicals, musical revues, or concerts. Some have drawn on authentic folk songs or the work of significant musical artists, but recently most have featured newly composed scores and explore fascinating stories set in our region. Launched in 1970, this professional company performs under the summer stars in the 650-seat amphitheater at Peninsula State Park. Its fall season, begun in 1992 at a local town hall, moved indoors recently to the state-of-the-art Gould Theater at Northern Sky’s new Creative Center in the heart of Door County. The story of Northern Sky Theater (NST) begins with Dave Peterson, a professor at UW-Extension who taught a one-month course about the folklore of the Great Lakes at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UWGB) in January, 1970. His students rehearsed Song of the Inland Seas, an epic revue Peterson had recently written celebrating the songs and stories of sailors, settlers, and working people of the Upper Midwest. Shortly before, while camping at Peninsula State Park in Door County, Peterson had come across a pine-rimmed theatre with a tree vaulting through a corner of its stage. The theatre was used for occasional naturalist programs. Feeling the magic in this beautiful wooded setting, he put together a cast of seven singers and instrumentalists and performed Song of the Inland Seas on the Peninsula Park stage for two weeks in the summer of 1970.

  • RECLAIMING a LOST LANDMARK Gershwin's First Broadway Musical
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Amy Frank, Managing Director Phone: 920.743.1760 [email protected] RECLAIMING A LOST LANDMARK Gershwin’s First Broadway Musical is Restored and Onstage STURGEON BAY, WI [July 2019]: For the first time in over a century George Gershwin’s very first musical, La La Lucille, will be staged - not on Broadway as it was in 1919 - but in the intimate Studio Theatre at Third Avenue Playhouse in Sturgeon Bay. Although much of the music for the show has been lost over time, La La Lucille has been restored and reconstructed by composer/director James Valcq (co-Artistic Director at Third Avenue Playhouse) for its second-ever performance, opening July 25 and running through September 1st. La La Lucille is a riotous, fast-paced farce about a married couple who plot to become temporarily divorced in order to claim an inheritance. When their scheme goes awry, hilarity, hijinks, and tap dancing ensue. The score brims over with Gershwin melodies that haven’t been heard in a century, as well as some that have never been performed, plus a bonus of several immortal Gershwin hits. It all started with a manila file folder. James Valcq was barely ten years old he found a manila file folder at an antique fair in Milwaukee that was marked ‘La La Lucille Selection’ by George Gershwin. Valcq already knew the name George Gershwin and was instantly intrigued. Inside the folder he found sheet music for a lengthy overture-like medley, including the music for six songs. Curious, he convinced his mother to buy it for him and he’s kept it ever since - in the same manila folder.
