AN UPLIFTING MUSICAL FOR A TROUBLED TIME When The Spitfire Grill opened off-Broadway in September, 2001, Americans were reeling from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. That was especially true for New Yorkers, who lived with daily reminders of the tragedy: smoke still rising from the trade center ruins; signs pasted on walls and light poles seeking information about lost loved ones; banks of flowers outside stations where firefighters had posted photos of fallen comrades. The Spitfire Grill, with its reaffirmation of American values and its message of hope, held out a bit of comfort during a most troubled time. “It is not often that material moves me to tears, but this was one of those occasions,” critic John Simon said in New York Magazine. “The Spitfire Grill has the heart and soul that your Producers and Full Montys cannot begin to approach. The Heritage Ensemble
For half a century, Northern Sky Theater and its predecessor troupe (the Heritage Ensemble) have passionately pursued a unique mission: to solely create and produce original shows illuminating American culture (especially that of the Upper Midwest). All productions have been book musicals, musical revues, or concerts. Some have drawn on authentic folk songs or the work of significant musical artists, but recently most have featured newly composed scores and explore fascinating stories set in our region. Launched in 1970, this professional company performs under the summer stars in the 650-seat amphitheater at Peninsula State Park. Its fall season, begun in 1992 at a local town hall, moved indoors recently to the state-of-the-art Gould Theater at Northern Sky’s new Creative Center in the heart of Door County. The story of Northern Sky Theater (NST) begins with Dave Peterson, a professor at UW-Extension who taught a one-month course about the folklore of the Great Lakes at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UWGB) in January, 1970. His students rehearsed Song of the Inland Seas, an epic revue Peterson had recently written celebrating the songs and stories of sailors, settlers, and working people of the Upper Midwest. Shortly before, while camping at Peninsula State Park in Door County, Peterson had come across a pine-rimmed theatre with a tree vaulting through a corner of its stage. The theatre was used for occasional naturalist programs. Feeling the magic in this beautiful wooded setting, he put together a cast of seven singers and instrumentalists and performed Song of the Inland Seas on the Peninsula Park stage for two weeks in the summer of 1970.

Although much of the music for the show has been lost over time, La La Lucille has been restored and reconstructed by composer/director James Valcq (co-Artistic Director at Third Avenue Playhouse) for its second-ever performance, opening July 25 and running through September 1st. La La Lucille is a riotous, fast-paced farce about a married couple who plot to become temporarily divorced in order to claim an inheritance. When their scheme goes awry, hilarity, hijinks, and tap dancing ensue. The score brims over with Gershwin melodies that haven’t been heard in a century, as well as some that have never been performed, plus a bonus of several immortal Gershwin hits. It all started with a manila file folder. James Valcq was barely ten years old he found a manila file folder at an antique fair in Milwaukee that was marked ‘La La Lucille Selection’ by George Gershwin. Valcq already knew the name George Gershwin and was instantly intrigued. Inside the folder he found sheet music for a lengthy overture-like medley, including the music for six songs. Curious, he convinced his mother to buy it for him and he’s kept it ever since - in the same manila folder.
