WTF Tour—Tampa April 16, 2011 by Chris Lang

There was still snow on the ground as I boarded the plane Tuesday. I hoped I was leaving the snow and the flu that I'd had the weekend before behind. Eight hours later, as I stepped off the plane in Key West, a warm sea breeze hit me and instantly put a smile on my face that didn't leave for the 9 days I was in FL. Three days at my friend Jack's in Key West was the warm up to the opening show of Buffett's "Welcome to Finland" Tour in Tampa. The time was spent enjoying the sun, sand and yeah....the nightlife.

Friday morning we picked up our rental car and spent the day traveling up the Keys, across the Tamiami Trail to Naples and up I-75 to Tampa. That evening we were meeting dozens of other Parrotheads from Florida, New England and across the country at Skippers Smokehouse, an outdoor venue where the Coral Reefers were doing a show. John Frinzi and John Patti joined Nadirah, Jim Mayer, , Mike Utley, and Nadirah's band, Outside Art on stage, and they entertained us for over 4 hours. Afterwards we hung around and got to meet and chat with them all, which only made the night that much more memorable.

Saturday was the big day. Jimmy's first show since "The Fall". Tampa's venue is at the State Fairgrounds, and it is run much differently from what we are used to at Great Woods. For one thing, the hotels are across the street from the venue, so walking back and forth to use the bathroom or change clothes is very convenient. Also, the gates opened at 9am, and no one really directs traffic. It's a free for all, and people park their vehicles wherever they want and set up their tailgate. Cars, trucks and RV's are all parking in the same area amongst each other.

WTF Tour—Tampa April 16, 2011 cont.

We were tailgating with the Buffettnews crew, and had paid to help bring in some artists to per- form during the tailgate. The money sponsored the artists and also a buffet, and all proceeds were given to the Soldier's Angels Foundation, helping military families. John Friday, The Charlie D Trio and John Frinzi performed all afternoon until it was time to head for the venue.

After a 3 song set by Ilo, the familiar refrains of "Hot, Hot, Hot" began and the Coral Reefers came to the stage. The song ended and the Coral Reefers just stood there for a second until there was movement to the right side of the stage...... it was Jimmy, climbing back on stage from where he fell in Australia, draped in an Australian flag.

"The rumors of my demise have been exaggerated" he said to the roar of a Pavilion of applaud- ing fans. As the roar subsided, Jimmy started the night with "The Wino & I Know". By the end of the night, Jimmy had pulled a dozen rabbits out of his hat, entertaining us with gems from the past such as Tampico Trauma, Life is Just a Tire Swing, Boomerang Love, Stranded On a Sand- bar, and Treat Her Like a Lady before ending the night with and an acoustic Lovely Cruise. Walking back to the tailgate with the 3 friends I watched the show with, we figured we had been to over 100 shows between all of us and all agreed this was by far the best Buffett concert any of us had ever been to.

Tampa was everything I had hoped and more, and I look forward to taking Marilyn with me next year. If you haven't been yet.....join us next year!

WTF TOUR—GREAT WOODS JUNE 18 2011

A Virgins Point of View by Lorrie & Bob Doering

You always hear about tailgate parties at Jimmy Buffet concerts and of course the concert itself of how outrageous and fun and exciting it is; but back in your mind you still have lingering thoughts – is it REALLY that much fun, is it REALLY that good; just how much fun is fun??

Well we found out on June 18th that it REALLY is that much fun and it REALLY was that good and oh boy the FUN we had!! We were lucky that we had friends who “prepped” us over the years as to what to expect (thanks Joe & Cindy) otherwise it might still be in therapy now. LOL

The good news is that we’re not as crazy as we thought, we fit right in with a LOT of other peo- ple. However, investing in some props for the next concert is in order: Bob will need a coconut bra and we both need grass skirts, at a minimum. Our car however will not support carrying a Tiki bar or a pool so we either rent a van or go without; although I don't think most folk mind sharing theirs as long as you bring a rum drink, or offer to “show em!”

I enjoyed the “RV” park; especially the Limos – what a deal: drinking, partying, seeing a fantas- tic concert, and at the end of the day driven home in luxury vehicle. That's the way to go! The “Boat Bus” was another sweet deal; they certainly took that to a new level and I would have loved to see that motoring down the Interstate. I wonder if the sails were down?!

Then there was the concert. What can we say: fantastic is a great start; followed by fun, won- derful, great! Jimmy certainly is an amazing performer. We now have some new favorites, old- ies that we had not heard of before. Now when we are out on the boat and listening to Radio we will have a great memory of the night we heard it sung live by the man himself.

We certainly enjoyed our first experience and have a greater appreciation for all involved. Can't wait till the next time! Lorrie & Bob

Tropical Ice Breaker by Scott Paulson New Frozen Fins members and adopted club “ house band” Scott Paulson and Barbara Smith took their “Island Time Steel Drums” down to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware to play for the Delaware Seashore Parrot head club in April. Their hosts were ex-Vermonter Paula “Pepperr” Liner and hubby Tony Zeccola. Pepperr used to play in Scott’s large community Steel Band "The Panhandlers" before her escape from the snow belt. Hospitality at Pepperr and Tony’s was beyond compare as Scott and Barb were refused the opportunity to buy any food or beverages for their entire stay!

The DSPHC event was at Timouthy’s on the Beach in Rehoboth. It has a great party room with a nice stage and flatscreens everywhere. The party was great, complete with dancing, raffles, and conga lines. In typical parrot head fash- ion the CDs were cleaned out (proceeds going to S&B’s non- profit) and the tip bucket was filled! Many new phriends were made including Trop Rocker Mike Mangum from Kill Devil Hills, NC and his partner Maui Deb!

The evening was fantastic and plans were made for an- other gathering down at “Mangos” in Bethany Beach the next day. Over more food and Beverages, plans were hatched for musical collaboration between ITSD and Mike at Key Largo’s “Pit Stop” which is on Halloween right on the way to MOTM! Barb and Scott are thrilled to be part of this and to make many new musical connections there, and down in Key West!

When all the Delaware dust settled there were many new Facebook friends and new “Likes” on Island Time Steel Drums Facebook page! Much gratitude goes out to the Dela- ware Seashore Parrot Head Club, president Michael Ohr, and especially to our dear friends Pepperr and Tony. Be sure to meet them when they are up for the Beach House on the Mountain Festival!

Sweet 16 party! The Frozen Fins are 16! Woohoo! by Barbara Smith

Hosts Marilyn and Chris put on an awesome spread for Frozen Fins Sweet 16 party. The potluck spread was awesome; Captain Tony’s punch brought by Terry & Donna, incredible dips, chicken wings, and highlights were the Cindy’s rum rats and “kitty litter”, complete with scoop! Great food and drink, company, and music from Island Time Steel Drums. Spirits remained high, despite the slightly liquid sunshine! We did not let a few showers ruin our good time! The party stretched into the wee hours of the early morning, when Joe decided to break out a guitar and Scott took out his bass, and Barb her sax for a late night kitchen jam. Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with us, and brought such awe- some food, beverages, and great vibes! Happy Birthday Frozen Fins!

Lund Family Center Mother’s Day Ride by Cindy Bolton

This was a first time event for the Frozen Fins. We had discussed finding an additional volunteer effort and this could be it. The Lund Family Cen- ter’s mission is to help children thrive by serv- ing families with children, pregnant or parent- ing teens and young adults, and adoptive fami- lies. They are Vermont’s oldest and largest pri- vate non-profit adoption agency and the only residential treatment program for pregnant and parenting young women and their children. This is their third annual fundraiser bike ride which consists of three rides to choose from - a 16 mile ride, 30 mile ride, and a 50 mile ride. They also have a 3.5 mile family ride which allows even young chil- dren to ride. We had 14 Frozen Fins volun- teering as well as three parakeets. These parakeets have been attending events since they were infants and are always a wel- come addition. Our main function was to give each group of bike riders an enthusi- astic Parrott Head send off - and they really seemed to ap- preciate it. We also wel- comed them back after their ride and re- warded them with mardi gras beads (no, they didn‘t have to flash). The final group heading out was a large group of family bike riders and for this leg of the ride, which went from Rice High School to Shemanski Park and back, 7 Frozen Fins were spread out over the course to help out with motivation and safety. The rest stayed behind at the start/finish to welcome back the returning riders from the longer seg- ments.

This was a fun and easy event and likely something we will do again. They even fed us lunch !

VT 100 Mile Race Aid-Station! We are the Caribbean Crew at Mile 62! th Saturday July 16 By Sharon Quackenbush

VASS is VT Adaptive Ski & Sports, and they are one of our favorite charities. We run an aid station at the 100 mile in July and the 50 mile in September/October every year (the two biggest fundraisers that support them all year). It's a lot of fun, 'cause we're doing something really helpful for the runners (100 mile) and bikers & runners (50 mile) and having a great time doing the Parrothead party thing at the same time and it earns you points for next year’s concert tickets!

We prepare the food (cutting fruit, making sandwiches, heating soup, refreshing bowls of candy, etc) the drinks (pouring cans of soda into smaller serving cups, mix- ing Heed (sports drink), filling runners water bottles, making hot cocoa on chilly days, etc) and giving encouragement... and sometimes that can be the most impor- tant thing! There are a few other things that also need to be done, like helping run- ners cross traffic on the nearby main road, taking bib numbers and times as runners come through, laying out or finding drop bags for runners, directing traffic flow, and of course keeping the handlers (runner’s family and helpers) out of the way, under control and giving them directions (an also encouragement). We also dole out the aspirin to the runners, grill a lot of burgers and have a few cold Coronas and ‘Ritas, As you can tell, from the list of duties above, we can use all the help we can get, it’s for a great cause and a lot of fun! The date is Saturday, July 16. We usually start setting up around 10:30, as the station’s open 12pm-10:45pm this year! We need people all day long.....so make a whole day of it if you can….or just come to help out when you can.

Bring along some burgers, rolls, or other items we can grill up to keep our strength up for the day….and if you have something special you’d like to add to the table of goodies for the runners, they really appreciate it. By the time they get to us, they’ve seen pretty much the same thing at every station already and look for variety! And don't forget your Parrot Head Attire and Attitude! The runners look forward to it!!

Thanks for volunteering for this great event! Looking forward to seeing the Fins I know, and meeting some new ones!

Fins WAY Up! Quack
