In fact, Orwell's book is much talked about in this short story. But instead of Big Brother watching you, you have the appropriate authorities listening to your every word. The web has become a control tool and people rarely leave their houses. City of Silence said that outside the borders of the State there are other Web sites, but those were only urban legends. As a huge fan ofI loved The City of Silence. Jul 18, Althea Ann rated it liked it. Nov 21, Jay C rated it it was amazing. Cutting edge dystopian fiction! Jan 01, City of Silence Raybould rated it really City of Silence it. Interesting and highly topical short story about how far the "appropriate authorities" may go to make the web 'healthy'. Free speech is the enemy and an imposed silence is the cure. It's a kind of an update of themes for the technological age in which only the stupid survive because "a society full of City of Silence men is a stable one". As scary as it is true. Dec 16, Jon rated it really liked it. A great piece on censorship, communication, and governance. Sad and terrifying, yet relevant, especially with anyone City of Silence has ever thought about surveillance and our digital forms of socialization today. Technology is neutral, and can only be used to strengthen whichever style of governance becomes the standard. Only we as people get a chance to decide the values we want by fighting for ourselves. It really has the potential to be extended to a novel! To me, retrospectively, it even feels like a novel. Read for a Political Science Basics course. City of Silence - Wikipedia It first aired on 24 Octoberduring the second season. In his own world there are no places left beyond the reach of his voice. His neighbor is no longer just next door, but anywhere at the end of a wire. And City of Silence all began when prehistoric man discovered the art of communication A city couple driving in the countryside makes a turn into City of Silence mysterious valley road where their car hits a rock and stops working. After the couple leaves their car, the wife has a slight City of Silence in which she rolls downhill and sprains her ankle. When the husband reaches her, they realise they are being stalked and attacked City of Silence tumbleweeds which appear to be possessed by some form of energy. At first they attempt City of Silence keep the tumbleweeds at bay with fire, but soon run out of firewood. At this point they are saved by a severely disturbed possibly schizophrenic farmer named Lamont, who explains that things have been awkward in the valley ever since a " meteor " landed two weeks before, causing his farm to die out. Lamont tells them he stayed merely out of curiosity, but now the possessed weeds, trees and rocks won't allow him to leave either. The three make their way to Lamont's house where they spend a City of Silence night surrounded by tumbleweeds first and then thousands of frogs. The wife discovers Lamont's diary containing eloquent and intelligent passages regarding his awareness of an apparent alien presence. Come morning, they walk back to the car without trouble, only to be attacked by living rocks once they get there. One rock kills Lamont. The couple run back to the farmhouse, where Lamont eventually returns and sits down in a chair, remaining motionless, speechless and in a trance-like state, with the couple trying to rouse him, and then realizing that he has been possessed by an unknown entity. The husband then decides that the only way they are ever to escape is to attempt to communicate with whatever is behind the possessions. The husband manages to make contact through self-hypnosis, and is briefly possessed by what appears to be a non-corporeal alien mind that came to Earth out of mere curiosity, but failed to establish communication. The extraterrestrial presence bemoans its vain attempt at communicating with humans and eventually departs after transmitting the idea that mankind perhaps needs more time to evolve in order to communicate with it. After City of Silence departure, everything returns to normal, allowing the couple to return to their car. On their way home, the husband compassionately philosophises that, while both of them are only a few miles away from their home, the alien intelligence must, to the contrary, be far further from its own.

It begins by tracing Kavan’s life and examining the mythologies around her radical self- reinvention (in adopting the name of her own fictional character), madness and drug addiction. It attempts to map a place for her previously neglected work in twentieth-century women’s writing and criticism. Close reading of Kavan’s fiction attends to her uses of narrative voice in representing a divided self. Given Kavan’s treatment by the Swiss existential psychiatrist Ludwig Binswanger, the thesis explores connections between her writing and the British anti-psychiatry movement, especially R D Laing. Focussing primarily on the Modernist and Postmodern aspects of Kavan’s work, it also notes Gothic and Romantic inflections in her writing, establishing thematic continuity with her early Helen Ferguson novels.
