Things to consider before enrolling at LPLTC…

Check with your Counselor Make sure that you are on the correct diploma track and that your Area of Concentration is correct in PowerSchool.

Exemplar Attendance If you aren’t at school, you aren’t learning. If you aren’t learning, you aren’t gaining the skills necessary for certification, the work environment, etc. If you aren’t gaining those skills, you have wasted your time and our time as well.

Good Behavior Record Your track record is a good indicator of how responsible you are. After safety training and experience, LPLTC students will be using needles in labs, putting hands in engines, and representing the home school, LPLTC, and LPPS in the community, etc.; therefore, you need a good track record of behaving. If there are consistent behavioral issues, you will return to your home school campus for Semester 2.

Recommended 2.0 GPA The ability to complete the rigorous coursework required for the national certification curriculum and possible dual enrollment credit is necessary. For internship courses, if you do not make a 70% or better for Semester 1 (80% for PNII and PCT) or are unable to participate in an internship for other reasons, you remain at LPLTC to complete content modules and research assignments.

IEP Holders If you currently have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), an IEP must be held to reflect LPLTC attendance before the first day of school. The Director and/or the LPLTC IEP Facilitator must be in attendance. IEP teams should review information at All Things Jump Start when considering the appropriate pathway and career preparation experience for the individual student.

Being fortunate enough to attend LPLTC, you are expected to fulfill our motto, “Meant for GREATness!” Greatness is not synonymous with grades; it includes appearance, character and attitude. Greatness is not something given to a person. It is achieved…one must work for it. So, it is meant that students should do their homework, study, get involved, be respectful to all people, care about one’s appearance, clean up after oneself, etc. We are excited to see you take the steps necessary to become a part of the GREATness that LPLTC offers!

Sincerely,

Kimberly P. Albin LPLTC Director

LPPS Application Process for LPLTC I. Introduction: An admission process is necessary in career and technical education (CTE) schools where space is a limiting factor. CTE laboratories, simulations, and shops are designed and equipped to serve a specific maximum number of students safely. Consequently, a complex of such laboratories lacks both the space and flexibility to accommodate the possible needs and/or interests of all applicants. Interested students will complete an application.

II. Eligibility: Any Livingston Parish junior (11th grade) or senior (12th grade) student from a public high school in the Livingston Parish Public School district (Albany High School, Denham Springs High School, Doyle High School, French Settlement High School, Holden High School, Live Oak High School, Maurepas High School, Springfield High School, and Walker High School) is eligible to apply subject to the availability of openings. Pre-requisites are required if enrolling in the Automotive Service Tech II, Computer Service Technician II, and Pre-Nursing II. • AST I, instructor discretion, and earning ASE Light Maintenance a Repair certification are pre-requisites for AST II • CST I, instructor discretion, and earning the CompTIA A+ certification are pre-requisites for CST II • CNA is a pre-requisite for PCT

III. Organizational Structure: LPLTC is a public CTE program located in Walker, Louisiana that serves nine Livingston Parish public high schools. LPLTC is committed to providing quality CTE programs to eligible students. An annual quota is determined for each high school.

Each high school’s percentage of seats will be determined using the following formula: Home School TOTAL of October 1st 10th Grade Enrollment + October 1st 11th Grade Enrollment ÷ District TOTAL of October 1st 10th Grade Enrollment + October 1st 11th Grade Enrollment = Home School’s % of Seats.

The Number of seats per course will be determined by the following formula: TOTAL Number of LPLTC Course Seats X Home School’s % of Seats=School’s Number of Seats per Course.

Seat Counts Are as Follows: Automotive Service Technician (AST) includes AST II= 38 For Example: Computer Service Technician (CST) includes CST II= 40 Knight High School LPPS Total Criminal Justice (CJ) = 46 10th grade students 200 2000 Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) = 38 11th grade students 200 2000 Engineering Technician (ET) = 36 Total: 400 4000 Patient Care Technician (PCT) = 36 400 / 4000 = 0.1 (Knight High Schools % of seats) Pre-Nursing II (PNII) = 36 Automotive Seats – (42) (0.1) = 4.2 seats = 4 seats TOTAL Seats = 270

IV. Recruitment Process: The LPLTC Director is responsible for disseminating information about LPLTC through district initiatives, producing marketing materials, attending local 8th Grade and high school assemblies, issuing press releases, and sponsoring open houses and information sessions. LPLTC is also responsible for annually supplying the Guidance Counselors at area high schools with current information about LPLTC. LPLTC is MEANT for GREATNESS! 5

LPLTC disseminates information about the school through a variety of methods: a. An invitation to tour LPLTC facilities is extended to all principals of Livingston Parish middle schools that have 8th grade students to provide them an overview of CTE education, the admission policy, the CTE opportunities available, and the courses offered as well as to show how credentials earned impact the student, school, and district. b. LPLTC hosts an annual Car Show to invite area students, parents, business, and industry to participate in an opportunity to speak with the Director and instructors and to tour the facility to showcase what is available for the students of Livingston Parish. c. LPLTC seeks invitations to Livingston Parish high schools’ Open Houses, assemblies, Career Fairs, etc., to share awareness of the LPLTC program with students and parents in the district. d. Parents may schedule individual visits at a mutually convenient time. e. Brochures, fliers, and catalogs, which describe CTE programs including courses, dual enrollment and articulation agreements, industry credentialing and other resources, are distributed throughout the school year at any functions attended by LPLTC. These documents are also on display at the facility for any visitors. f. LPLTC.org and the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center Facebook page offer information about all available programs.

V. Application Process: th th Any current 10 grade (sophomore) or 11 grade (junior) student interested in applying to LPLTC for fall admission must: 1. Complete the LPLTC application at the student’s home school. 2. Complete the LPLTC application by making sure that the information entered is accurate! Students should apply for the desired course and list an alternate course, if interested. This does not guarantee acceptance to the course. 3. Follow any directions and requirements made by the home school for scheduling. For example, if students schedule through PowerSchool at the home school, then they will need to complete this step as well.

Applications submitted will be reviewed by the homebased school counselor. Student requests are filled based on seat availability. If requests exceed allotted seats, a lottery to randomly select students will be used to fill available seats. Priority seating will be given to students pursuing a Jump Start Career diploma.

By the THIRD Friday in April, all schools must provide the LPLTC Director a list of students requesting LPLTC courses and a separate list of students designated as a waiting list.

Late Applications received after the THIRD Friday of April will continue to be processed with enrollment pending on seat availability. The Wait List will be discontinued 10 school days after the first day of school in the attending school year for Semester 1, and students must wait until the following school year to reapply if they are still enrolled in the LPPS system.

Unfilled Seats per school will be available seats for other schools in the district on April 25th or after to fill class quota.

By the 3rd Monday in May, the LPLTC Director will begin notifying schools of the students being placed in courses from the Wait List. Home School counselors will notify the student as updates are sent.

***Students MUST provide their own transportation to participate at LPLTC.***

Dual Enrollment (DE) means that the student is earning both high school and college credit when enrolled in selected courses.

LPLTC is partnered with Northshore Technical Community College (northshorecollege.edu) so that students can earn Dual Enrollment college credit funded by TOPS Tech. So, it is FREE to the student and does not affect their future TOPS status. Requirements: ACT or Pre-ACT scores that include: COMPOSITE score of 15, PLUS, a MATH sub-score of 15, PLUS, ENGLISH sub-score of 15 2.0 GPA

If a student does NOT have these scores, he may still take the course, but will complete the course to earn Articulated Credit (AC).

Once the course is completed, the student will bring his transcript to Northshore Technical Community College to receive the Articulated Credit on his college transcript. Some credits transfer to universities, saving you money!
