The launch event will take place on 22 July at 3 pm CEST when the Foundation will present the brand new European-wide system of hiking trails along the Liberation Route Europe. Berlin - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin Coordinates: 52°30′26″N 13°8′45″E Berlin From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Berlin (/bɜːrˈlɪn, ˌbɜːr-/, German: [bɛɐ̯ˈliːn]) is the capital and the largest city of Germany as well as one of its 16 Berlin constituent states, Berlin-Brandenburg. With a State of Germany population of approximately 3.7 million,[4] Berlin is the most populous city proper in the European Union and the sixth most populous urban area in the European Union.[5] Located in northeastern Germany on the banks of the rivers Spree and Havel, it is the centre of the Berlin- Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has roughly 6 million residents from more than 180 nations[6][7][8][9], making it the sixth most populous urban area in the European Union.[5] Due to its location in the European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. Around one- third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals and lakes.[10] First documented in the 13th century and situated at the crossing of two important historic trade routes,[11] Berlin became the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (1417–1701), the Kingdom of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933) and the Third Reich (1933–1945).[12] Berlin in the 1920s was the third largest municipality in the world.[13] After World War II and its subsequent occupation by the victorious countries, the city was divided; East Berlin was declared capital of East Germany, while West Berlin became a de facto West German exclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall [14] (1961–1989) and East German territory.

It will go on show in the new James Simon Gallery, the entrance building for Museum Island currently under construction.© SPK / ART+COM, 2017 A ground-breaking research project initiated last year by the German government, museums, research institutes in cooperation with the heirs of a Jewish media mogul has traced eight works confiscated by the Nazis and launched an online database to help find more. Thousands of paintings, books, sculptures and antiques were seized from Rudolf Mosse, who was one of the richest men in Berlin at the end of the 19th century. The Mosse Art Research Initiative, which was announced in March 2017, has a budget of €500,000 funded by the heirs and the German government’s Lost Art Foundation and is led by Meike Hoffmann, an art historian at Berlin’s Free University. It is the first such cooperative research project between the heirs of a Jewish collector robbed by the Nazis and the German government. The eight works the project has so far traced include a painting by Emil Jakob Schindler at Vienna’s Belvedere and a work by Jozef Israëls at the Tel Aviv Museum in Israel. A member of the Mosse Art Research Project team identified a painting of skaters called Winter by Carl Melchers at the Arkell Museum in Canajoharie, New York, when museum staff posted it on Facebook before the Christmas holidays, Hoffmann says.

Pressemitteilung Berlin, den 8. Juli 2014 Tempelhof Central Airport. The American Story Special Exhibition at the Allied Museum, July 9, 2014 to April 19, 2015 The new special exhibition at the Allied Museum, Tempelhof Central Airport. The American Story, will for the first time present the American era at the former Berlin central airport. The exhibition spans the entire era of the American presence at Tempelhof, from the turn-over of the airport to the Americans in July 1945, by the Soviet troops who had conquered it, to its transfer to the Berlin Airport Company in 1993. As the exhibition clearly shows, Tempelhof Airport is a significant place of remembrance of the Cold War. The focus is on the dual function of the airport: For nearly fifty years, Tempelhof was both an American air base and a commercial airport. The “home of the Airlift” was used by the Western powers as a reconnaissance outpost and as a protective shield during the Cold War. The military mission of the U.S. Air Force was to guarantee air traffic to and from West Berlin both logistically and technically, and with all necessary protective, monitoring and maintenance measures. The exhibition shows how the Allies controlled aviation security, and how Tempelhof Airport was used to carry out espionage and electronic reconnaissance flights. Another exhibition space is dedicated to the Berlin Airlift at the time of the Soviet blockade of 1948/49. Every few minutes, an airplane loaded with vital supplies for Berlin’s population landed at Tempelhof. Less well known is the fact that the airport was the “Gateway to Freedom” for many refugees from East Germany; from here, they were flown to their new homes in West Germany.
