Taiwanese Eyes on the Modern: Cold War Dance Diplomacy and American Modern Dances in Taiwan, 1950–1980 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Tsung-Hsin Lee, M.A. Graduate Program in Dance Studies The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee Hannah Kosstrin, Advisor Harmony Bench Danielle Fosler-Lussier Morgan Liu Copyrighted by Tsung-Hsin Lee 2020 2 Abstract This dissertation “Taiwanese Eyes on the Modern: Cold War Dance Diplomacy and American Modern Dances in Taiwan, 1950–1980” examines the transnational history of American modern dance between the United States and Taiwan during the Cold War era. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the Carmen De Lavallade-Alvin Ailey, José Limón, Paul Taylor, Martha Graham, and Alwin Nikolais dance companies toured to Taiwan under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. At the same time, Chinese American choreographers Al Chungliang Huang and Yen Lu Wong also visited Taiwan, teaching and presenting American modern dance. These visits served as diplomatic gestures between the members of the so-called Free World led by the U.S. Taiwanese audiences perceived American dance modernity through mixed interpretations under the Cold War rhetoric of freedom that the U.S. sold and disseminated through dance diplomacy. I explore the heterogeneous shaping forces from multiple engaging individuals and institutions that assemble this diplomatic history of dance, resulting in outcomes influencing dance histories of the U.S. and Taiwan for different ends. I argue that Taiwanese audiences interpreted American dance modernity as a means of embodiment to advocate for freedom and social change. -

To understand Neo-Orientalism, that is, 19th century Orientalist concepts which were filtered through Primitivism in the 20th century, the racial, sexual and class antagonisms of the period, which not only influenced attitudes towards erotic and exotic imagery, but also defined and categorized humanity, must be considered in their historical context. -

We realize that the movement peculiar to its nature is eternal to its nature. The movement of the free animals and birds remains always in correspondence to their nature, the necessities and wants of that nature, and its correspond ence to the earth nature. It is only when you put free animals under ~~restr iction s that the"y lose the power-or moving lnlla rr'n o~y with nature, and adopt a movement expressive of the restncflons placed about thel!l. · . ------~- ,. So it has been with civili zed man. The movements of the savage, who lived in freedom in constant touch with Nature, were unrestricted, natural and beautiful. Tanztheater, Pina Bausch and the Ongoing Influence of Her Legacy

Postgraduate Choreography in The Place Introducction Pina Bausch and the Tanztheater Wuppertal have been fundamental in the inter- national establishment of Tanztheater as a new and independent dance genre, and their impact is evident and vibrant in the current contemporary dance scene. To support this statement I will first unfold the history of modern dance in Germany, from Rudolf Laban and the German expressive dance movement of the 1920’s, to the creations of Kurt Jooss and finally the formation of Tanztheater Wuppertal in 1973. I will then study Bausch’s life and work, and reveal the essential and unique characteristics of her style, to ultimately prove the ongoing influence of her legacy, looking at one of the final pieces of the 2013 London based choreographic competition The Place Prize. Backstage 2007 THE DANCER OF THE FUTURE will be one whose body and soul have grown so harmoniously together that the natural language of that soul will have become the movement of the human body. The dancer will not belong to a nation but to all humanity. She will not dance in the form of nymph, nor fairy, nor coquette, but in the form of woman in her greatest and purest expression. From all parts of her body shall shine radiant intelligence, bringing to the world the message of the aspirations of thousands of women. She shall dance the freedom of women – with the highest intelligence in the freest body. What speaks to me is that Isadora Duncan was inspired foremost by a passion for life, for living soulfully in the moment. IA 11 A REEVALVAnON OF THE LITERARY WORKS OF EDWARD ALEXANDER [ALEISTER] CROWLEY Abstract For the last fifty years the poetry and prose of Edward Alexander [Aleister] Crowley (1875-1947) has been systematically ignored by scholars and critics on the narrow grounds that it deals with the occult sciences, is pornographic, or simply because detractors did not agree with Crowley's personal philosophy or life. Since the mid 1970's, however, academics have become increasingly interested in the mystical and occult content of William Butler Yeats's poetry, praising it for the same characteristics which have always been labeled "defects" in Crowley's work. -

Restaging Hysteria: Mary Wigman as Writer and Dancer Abstract Mary Wigman was not only a leading proponent of the early twentieth-century Expressionist dance movement, but also a writer of poetry and short poetic prose. Despite her assertion that dance was beyond language, she wrote often about dance in an attempt to articulate the kinesthetic experience of dance through languages. This interdisciplinary study explores the intersection of dance and writing for Wigman, focusing on gender coding in writing and dance within the context of early twentieth-century dialogues. Despite the pervasive equation of (feminine) hysteria with dance and (masculine) subjectivity with authorship, Wigman engaged in both activities. I argue that Wigman is able to reclaim and redefine the "hysteria" of the dance experience through writing about dance. -
Rami Be'er - a Political Choreographer
RAMI BE'ER - A POLITICAL CHOREOGRAPHER by Henia Rottenberg, B.A. Dissertation submitted in part fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of MA Dance Studies UNIVERSITY OF SURREY November 1997 ABSTRACT The work of Rami Be'er, an Israeli choreographer working with the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company since 1981, is analysed in order to establish the types of subject matters he has chosen and the ways in which has dealt with it. Be'er's development as a choreographer is placed in the context of the development of contemporary dance in Israel, influenced both by immigration from Central Europe and by visits from North American companies. Both abstract and expressive influences can be identified in Be'er's work, and the ways in which these different strategies function as processes of signification is discussed. A selection of Be'er's works is analysed from videos and the observation of live performances. Using both the Adshead et al four-stage model of analysis and Effort-Shape terminology from Laban Movement Analysis description, the works are characterised in terms of their movement vocabulary, use of space and structure.
