In an unstable South American country, capable Nostromo, a person of trust and a legend among his shipmates, is ordered to secure a shipment of silver and stop any revolutionaries who might try to take it. But even the bravest can be foolish. Konrad Korzeniowski came out of Nostromo and from Marseille began a sailor's life on merchant ships, surviving shipwreck, pirates and all the pains and glories of an adventurous seafaring life. After 15 years of this he settled in London and began writing novels. Among them two stand out as being among the mightiest achievements in English-language literature: Lord Nostromo and Nostromo. Throughout more than pages Conrad builds up an incredible portrait of this man, interweaving all the other characters around him. Conrad's Nostromo is to tell an adventure story but with high quality literature that has never been surpassed in this genre. It is as if he had applied the art of writers like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky Nostromo his work, so profound he is. Nostromo, when four European TV Film companies got together, helped by a Boston station, to Nostromo this magnificent novel into a TV series, they were up to the mark. -

How Star Wars Illuminates Constitutional Law
HOW STAR WARS ILLUMINATES CONSTITUTIONAL LAW † CASS R. SUNSTEIN ABSTRACT: Human beings often see coherence and planned design when neither exists. This is so in movies, literature, history, economics, and psychoanalysis – and constitutional law. Contrary to the repeated claims of George Lucas, its principal author, the Star Wars series was hardly planned in advance; it involved a great deal of improvisation and surprise, even to Lucas himself. Serendipity and happenstance, sometimes in the forms of eruptions of new thinking, play a pervasive and overlooked role in the creative imagination, certainly in single authored works, and even more in multi-authored ones extending over time. Serendipity imposes serious demands on the search for coherence in art, literature, history, and law. That search leads many people (including Lucas) to misdescribe the nature of their own creativity and authorship. The misdescription appears to respond to a serious human need for sense-making and pattern-finding, but it is a significant obstacle to understanding and critical reflection. Whether Jedi or Sith, many authors of constitutional law are a lot like the author of Star Wars, disguising the essential nature of their own creative processes. KEYWORDS: Serendipity; Judicial Interpretation; Supreme Court; Chain Novel; Originalism. RESUMO: Os seres humanos frequentemente identificam coerência e planejamento quando nenhum desses elementos sequer existe. Tal situação ocorre nos filmes, na Literatura, na História, na Economia e na † Robert Walmsley University Professor, Harvard University. Growing up with Vertigo: British Writers, Dc, and the Maturation of American Comic Books

Salisbury to The Faculty of the Graduate College of The University of Vermont In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Specializing in History May, 2013 Accepted by the Faculty of the Graduate College, The University of Vermont, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, specializing in History. Thesis Examination Committee: ______________________________________ Advisor Abigail McGowan, Ph.D ______________________________________ Melanie Gustafson, Ph.D ______________________________________ Chairperson Elizabeth Fenton, Ph.D ______________________________________ Dean, Graduate College Domenico Grasso, Ph.D March 22, 2013 Abstract At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC. -
Aliens” (1986) – Superior Sequel to the Original Source
“Aliens” (1986) – Superior Sequel to the Original Source Retrospective by Dr. John L. Flynn Introduction At first glance, the notion of a sequel to “Alien” (1979) must have seemed like such a forgone conclusion. Next to “Star Wars” (1977) and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977), Ridley Scott’s stylish thriller had been one of the most popular films of the decade. But in the six years since its release, the motion picture had also spawned a rash of forgettable clones. And in a period filled with sequels to almost every successful and popular Hollywood movie that rarely succeeded on their own merit as original entertainment, the new production appeared to be more of a tremendous gamble than a sure thing. Besides the challenge to bring something familiar and new under budget and on time to the screen, the project also had to deal with its share of preconceptions. The most obvious problem writer and director James Cameron faced in developing a sequel to “Alien,” he said, was, “How do you beat a classic? You really have to dig deep into the bag of tricks and come up with some good ideas. And you have to do a proper homage to the original without being a mindless fan, something which is a piece of entertainment and a story in its own right.” Spawning the Sequel In the wake of “Alien’s” success, many similar films soon began appearing at the local multi-plex. Just as it had been influenced by low budget science fiction films of the Fifties and Sixties, like “It! The Terror from Beyond Space” (1958) and “Planet of the Vampires” (1965), the critically-acclaimed motion picture inspired its own collection of imitators, including “Inseminoid” (1980), ‘The Creature Wasn’t Nice” (1981), “Galaxina” (1981), “Galaxy of Terror” (1981) and many others. -

I’m sure I’m not the only one who did not imagine how wide-ranging and long- lasting this disruption was going to be. Unfortunately, it still seems unsafe for us to hold meetings in person. I’m certain I’m not the only one who would love to meet up more with people but is also still very cautious and wary. I’m still not going far afield, and apart from a few garden meet-ups have only seen my husband and son in person for months. I was wondering how other people’s lives have changed and what they have found to occupy their time or to replace their normal activities. For example, I now use the telephone far less and use WhatsApp or Zoom for talking to people as it feels more of a connection than the voice-only aspect of telephoning. Perhaps it might be something that people could write about – eg are you reading more or less or differently? Have you found something you really like or recommend? Has anyone started a new project or activity – it doesn’t necessarily need to be SFF, just something you think we might like to hear about. -
