Occasional Papers Museum of Texas Tech University Number 338 15 July 2016 DESCRIPTION OF A NEW TRIBE OF SIGMODONTINE RODENTS (CRICETIDAE: SIGMODONTINAE) WITH AN UPDATED SUMMARY OF VALID TRIBES AND THEIR GENERIC CONTENTS JORGE SALAZAR-BRAVO, ULYSES F. J. PARDIÑAS, HORACIO ZEBALLOS, AND PABLO TETA ABSTRACT We provide a formal recognition to a tribal level clade composed of Andinomys and Puno- mys, two extant sigmodontine genera consistently and repeatedly recovered in the phylogenetic analyses of molecular and morphological data. As currently recognized, this tribe is distributed in middle to high elevations in the Andes of Bolivia, Peru, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina in habitats that range from high elevation grasslands and ecotonal areas to dry Puna. Within this new clade, Punomys appears as the more specialized member as it is fully restricted to rocky outcrops and their immediate surrounding areas at elevations above 4400 m on both sides of the Altiplano. In contrast, Andinomys occupies a broad elevational range (500–4000 m) and multiple habitats, from subtropical mountain forests and semiarid Puna and Prepuna to high altitudinal grasslands. Both taxa share a number of possible synapomorphies (e.g., presence of caudal enlargement of the post-zygapophysis in the second and eighth thoracic vertebrates, unilocular-hemiglandular stomachs with a large corpus and deep incisura angularis, and very similar chromosomal complements) and other diagnostic morphological features. The supratribal phylogenetic relationships of the taxon here named are not resolved even with the moderate amount of molecular data now available. In addition, we present a revised classification for the Sigmodontinae and comment on the content and context of this unique radiation of the Cricetidae. -

Despite the greater amount of ecomorphological information compiled for extant rodent species, studies usually lack of morphological data on dentition, which has led to difficulty in directly utilizing existing ecomorphological data of extant rodents for paleoecological reconstruction because teeth are the most common or often the only micromammal fossils. Here, we infer the environmental ranges of extinct rodent genera by extracting habitat information from extant relatives and linking it to extinct taxa based on the phenogram of the cluster analysis, in which variables are derived from the principal component analysis on outline shape of the upper first molars. This phenotypic ``bracketing'' approach is particularly useful in the study of the fossil record Submitted 22 February 2017 of small mammals, which is mostly represented by isolated teeth. Ramírez-Fernández, [email protected] Abstract Tweedy’s Crab-eating Rat, Ichthyomys tweedii Anthony, 1921, was described based on just a few specimens, and many aspects of its biology remains unclear. The species has only been previously reported to occur in two geographically disjunct areas in Panama and Ecuador. We report a new record of this species for southern Costa Rica. Our new record is the first for this species and the genus for Costa Rica, as well as the northernmost expression of the genus. ABSTRACT A new tribe of sigmodontine rodents is formally defined and diagnosed. The tribe contains the extant genera Abrothrix (including Chroeomys), Chelemys, Geoxus, Pearsonomys, and Notiomys, a group of taxa distributed in the central and southern Andes and lowlands both east and west of the cordillera. The new tribe presents a unique combination of characters including nasals and premaxilla usually projected anterior to the incisors, moderately trumpeted; zygomatic plate with upper free border reduced or obsolete; and third upper molar reduced and sub-cylindrical in out-line with an internal ring-like enamel fossette. Molecular phylogenetic analyses indicate that Abrothrix is sister to a clade containing the remaining genera of the new tribe. Phylogenetic hypotheses based on molecular markers indicate that the so-called Reithrodon group, including the extant genera Euneomys, Neotomys, and Reithrodon, formerly within the tribe Phyllotini, is not monophyletic. In turn, a new clade of tribal rank is recovered constituted by Euneomys, Irenomys, and Neotomys, comprising a small, mostly Andean sigmodontine radiation. Within the new clade, here named and diagnosed, Irenomys appears as a taxon with many specialized traits, which suggests an early divergence associated with the exploitation of Nothofagus forests. The living members of the new tribe are characterized by several mor- phological features including grooved upper incisors, narrow and parallel-sided interorbital regions, enlarged interparietals, and simplified and hypsodont molars. This new phylogenetic scenario implies a high degree of craniodental convergence among several lineages of sigmodontine rodents. The tribal position of several high- crowned extinct forms of sigmodontine rodents (e.g., Panchomys, Tafimys), formerly allocated to the Reithrodon group, is in need of revision. -

Zoological Studies (2015) 54:49 DOI 10.1186/s40555-015-0126-7 RESEARCH Open Access A new species of fish-eating rat, genus Neusticomys (Sigmodontinae), from Ecuador J Delton Hanson1*, Guillermo D’Elía2, Sheri B Ayers3, Stephen B Cox1, Santiago F Burneo4 and Thomas E Lee Jr5 Abstract Background: In this study, the genetic substructure and morphology of the species Neusticomys monticolus was evaluated. A nuclear marker and mitochondrial maker were used to examine phylogeographic structure and to estimate genetic distances. Two statistical measurement analyses were applied to morphological data. Results: These data recovered two morphologically distinct phylogeographic groups corresponding to populations on the eastern and western slopes of the Andes. Further, these eastern and western Andean slope populations of N. monticolus are 8.5 % divergent using sequence data from cytochrome-b (0.8 % divergent in the interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein gene). Conclusions: Populations currently assigned to N. monticolus constitute a species complex. The name N. monticolus is here restricted to western Andean slope populations. Populations on the eastern slope of the Andes are assigned to a new species, to which the authors assign the name Neusticomys vossi sp. nov.
