Alex Winter's assembly features appearances by Frank's widow Gail Zappa and several of Frank's musical collaborators including Mike Keneally, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Pamela Des Barres, Bunk Gardner, David Harrington, Scott Thunes, Ruth Underwood, Ray White and others. 49 west 27th street 7th floor new york, ny 10001 tel 212 924 6701 fax 212 924 6742 www.magpictures.com DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT – ALEX WINTER It seemed striking to me and producer Glen Zipper that there had yet to be a definitive, all-access documentary on the life and times of Frank Zappa. We set out to make that film, to tell a story that is not a music doc, or a conventional biopic, but the dramatic saga of a great American artist and thinker; a film that would set out to convey the scope of Zappa’s prodigious and varied creative output, and the breadth of his extraordinary personal and political life.

  • An Experiment in Multidisciplinary Teaching: the Musical Theatre of Frank Zappa
An Experiment in Interdisciplinary Teaching: The Music Theatre of Frank Zappa Paul Carr and Richard Hand, University of Glamorgan Project Report, June 2006 The global aim of this project was to investigate the viabilities of interdisciplinary teaching with undergraduates in the area of Drama and Popular Music: these are separate programs of study at the University of Glamorgan albeit within the same Department of Performing Arts. Popular Music is a relatively new degree scheme that commenced delivery in 2004, while Drama is well established, having been a single subject since the early 1990s. This report will examine the process of our multidisciplinary teaching experiment, and measure its effectiveness against the project aims set out below: • Enable staff and students from different disciplines to work together • Assist the assimilation and awareness of sister disciplines in order to discover commonality, and to learn from each other • Present a challenge for teaching staff who have extensive teaching experience in their own discipline but are new to academic investigation of colleague’s expertise • Begin the experimental and radical extension of the curriculum, with a view to develop other interdisciplinary modules and, ultimately, degree programmes The units chosen for this experiment were a final level module on the BA (Hons) Drama entitled American Theatre, and Ensemble Studies 3, drawn from the BA (Hons) Popular Music degree. The former module runs for a whole year and covers American theatre and live performance from the early twentieth century until the present day. A substantial and traditionally popular area of study within the module is the study of 1960-80s drama and performance which covers dramatists and theatre-makers like Sam Shepard, August Wilson and David Mamet and addresses topics such as the Vietnam war, the Civil Rights movement and AIDS.

  • A Spasso Con Frank

AtlantaTHE MONTHLY MAGAZINE OF THE ATLANTA MEMORIAL ARTS CENTER Arts JANUARY 1976 Of Special Interest AT THE CENTER im___________________ ALLIANCE THEATRE COMPANY Alliance Theatre Kicks Off Season with 'The Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia' On January 15, the Alliance Theatre begins its 1976 season at the Atlanta Memorial Arts Center with a fantastically funny and completely new work—The Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia. The production is made possible through the American Play wrights Theatre, an organization that promotes the production of new plays by regional member theatres before the rights become tied up for years on Broadway. The Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia has been scheduled to open on Broadway this spring and will be presented in at least fifteen theatres across the country this year. It has already played to Dallas audiences in addition to a tremendously acclaimed run at Washing ton D. C.’s Arena Stage. In White Magnolia, Preston Jones, a significant new voice in the American theatre, and the play’s author, looks at the raucous, discombobulated meeting of a fraternal lodge and its remaining seven members. The play, part of a trilogy about life and mores in a small Texas town, deals with these seven deadbeats as they try ineffectually to carry on a faded tradition of white sheets and blazing crosses (they found the KKK too liberal). Devoted to domino playing, drinking and reminiscing the “good of times” during their meetings, the fiction of a brotherhood is frittered f/ott r 6e.it fure away—the eventual break-up of the group is a moving experience.
