Karlovych (UKR) MATTERS DISCUSSED At the beginning of the meeting, we addressed the items discussed in the official WOM report submitted to FIDE. The Chairperson (Ms. Polgar) especially praised FIDE for the Women’s World Blitz and Rapid Championships in Saudi Arabia which had a substantially increased prize fund, though it was only one third of the prize in the Open section. The total prize fund in the Women’s championships were $250,000 for each event. Beatriz Marinello reported on her project “Smart Girl” on behalf of the Social Action commission, which included projects in Uganda, Chile, France and the US. This projects seeks to increase participation by girls in chess in those countries. Martha Fierro elaborated on the project about chess in women prisons in Genoa, Italy, which involved the training of refugees in Italy who in turn, train women prisoners. Sophia Rohde from the United States shared some of the work their federation is in doing to promote chess for girls in the USA. They subsequently presented a video showing various interviews with young girls in chess, highlighting the benefits and challenges that they experience in chess.

Women’s World Chess Championship was held in the Espinos Palace Hotel in Tehran, Iran, from February 10 (day of arrival) to March 4 (day of departure) 2017. 63 players (excluding Ms.Foisor, who passed away just few weeks before championship) from 28 countries participated in the WWCC2017. A tournament was played according to the knock-out system of 6 rounds, according to the FIDE WCC regulations for the event (FIDE Handbook, D 07).

5th WORLD WOMEN’S TEAM CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP Chengdu, CHINA 18– 29 April 2015 CHIEF ARBITER’S REPORT The 5th World Women’s Team Chess Championship was held in WANG JIANG HOTEL (5*), in Chengdu, China, from 18 (Arrival) to 29 (Departure) April 2015. The organizers were the Chinese Chess Association, FIDE and the Chengdu Municipal Government, with the support of the Board and Card Administrative Center of General Administration of Sports of China. Participants: According to the regulations, the ten (10) participated teams were: China, Russia, Ukraine, USA, India, Poland, Armenia, Georgia, Egypt and Kazakhstan. Schedule: The Tournament schedule that had been published on the web site was followed with no changes. The games started on 19 April, the free day was on 24 April and the tournament finished at the scheduled day, on 28 April. The drawing of lots was made during the Opening Ceremony and the captains’ Meeting took place at the same day, on April 18, one day before the start of the Tournament. Every round was started at 15.00. The start of the last round was at 11.30 and the Closing Ceremony was at 19.00. Playing hall: On March 3 the first round started in the Conference Hall of the WANG JIANG HOTEL. The playing hall was good, with enough space for players, captains, Match Arbiters and spectators and had good lighting and air-conditioning. All facilities were provided by the Organizers in the playing venue (bar with fruits, cookies, juices, water, coffee and tea for the players and officials, W.C., medical services, etc.) There was also a Press Room for the journalists.

FIDE Trainers’ Commission (TRG) FIDE Trainers’ Seminar Zhuhai, 01-03.07.2018 - Report FIDE-TRG organised its second seminar in Zhuhai, China, after the first one in 2014. The seminar was held in Zhuhai, southern China, next to Macau and Hong Kong in the Catic Hotel. It was co-organised by the FIDE, the Asian Chess Federation (ACF), the FIDE Trainers’ Commission (TRG) and the Chinese Chess Association (CCA). And a good number of 18 women trainers (39%), showed-up - China was never short of strong women chess-players and trainers! And who can forget that the FIDE Women World Champion is from China as well, GM Ju Wenjun… The seminar’s Lecturers were GM/FST/IA/IO Efstratios Grivas (Greece), who is also the Secretary of the FIDE Trainers’ Commission (TRG), GM/FST/IO Jiangchuan Ye who is also the Vice-President of the Chinese Chess Association (CCA) and Commission Member of TRG (China-Assistant) and KK (Kwai Keong) Chan (FT/IA/IO) who is also the President of the Hong Kong Chess Federation.

July / August 2006 NEWSLETTER OF THE ENGLISH CHESS FEDERATION £1.50 Magniﬁcent Bequest to the British Chess Federation John Robinson the well known and much esteemed chess organiser and arbiter died on 1st February 2006. John dedicated much of his life to chess in many forms, now comes the news of a magnificent bequest to the British Chess Federation of the order of £650,000. Of this sum about £120,000 will be invested in the British Chess Federation Permanent Invested Fund enabling John’s expressed wish of support for the British Championship to be carried out, the remainder of the bequest will be invested in the John Robinson Youth Chess Trust a Charitable Trust which means no inheritance tax is payable on John’s bequest. It is proposed that this money should be invested in such a way that the capital may be retained and the accumulated income used for grants from the Trust. This Legacy provides stability for the future of the Championship and for Junior Chess. If anyone wishes to consider a bequest to ECF/BCF please contact the Office for further details. Editorial The establishment of the National Chess Library is progressing well. The rooms have now been cleared and the specialised ECF News shelving is in place. The books are in the process of being unpacked with book plates Nominations for being added. As soon as an opening date is fixed this will be announced. REGULATIONS FOR THE WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH (FWWCM) 2017 1. Organization 1.1 The World Chess Federation (FIDE) is the governing body of the Women’s World Chess Championship. For the purpose of creating the rules and regulations, communicating with the players and negotiating with the organizer, the FIDE President has nominated a committee, hereby called the FIDE Commission for World Championships and Olympiads (hereinafter referred to as WCOC). Upon recommendation by the WCOC, the body responsible for any changes to the regulations of the Women’s World Championship Cycle events is the FIDE Presidential Board. 1.2 The FIDE Women’s World Chess Championship Match (hereinafter referred to as FWWCM) is the match between the current World Champion and her challenger. FIDE President’s address FIDE President welcomed all to the first ever meeting of the Online General Assembly and said that we are learning to work under new conditions and it is not an easy exercise. He proposed not to have formal scrutineers since the system does the count automatically and everyone receives the list with all the comprehensive data after the end of General Assembly; the only secret vote is for Olympiad 2024. The General Assembly approved. Dear Delegates of FIDE Online General Assembly, Dear chess friends, It is a privilege to share with you the results of our work, to summarize what has been achieved over the last two years, and to plan together for the future. My manifesto in 2018 included several promises, and I can proudly say that our dedicated team has managed to deliver - even during the difficult time of the pandemic. Our development program provided support to projects in more than 100 countries, and FIDE will keep providing this help since we know how important it is for national federations. Last year we allocated over 2 mln Euro for these purposes, this year we budgeted 1 mln Euro - due to reduced activity caused by the pandemic - but we are ready to get back to a full-scale support once the situation is normalized. Not only we cared to deliver funds to the federations, we ensured constant technical assistance and communication in such a way that many federations could feel that FIDE is always there for them.

After all twelve games of the regular part of the Championship ended in a draw, Carlsen and Caruana proceeded to a 4 rapid-games tiebreak match. Magnus Carlsen had the white pieces in the first game of the tiebreaks and picked to play the English opening. Carlsen gained the small advantage already in the opening, but after the middlegame, Caruana equalized the position and the players entered the rooks endgame with Carlsen having the pawn up. Although the position was drawish, Caruana missed right moves order for draw, and Carlsen used that opportunity to get the lead already in the first round. Caruana started sharply in the game two, and the players repeated the Sveshnikov varation, when Carlsen surprised his opponent in the opening, and took advantage very shortly after. Fabiano tried to keep the position sharp, but eventually blundered in the move 26th, and already two moves after, resigned. Magnus Carlsen needed a draw in the last game to remain the World Chess Champion position.

In 2005, however, Hungary’s Judit Polgar, who finished her career in 2015, was ranked No. 8 in the world. ● Armenia has 48 Grandmasters and only one of them is female. ● Female players constitute around 10% of all FIDE registered players. ● As of January 2019, there are 4737 registered chess players in Armenia and only 487 of them are females. Rothgerber and Wolsiefer (2014) use data from 12 scholastic chess tournaments in the USA to show that the performance of female participants worsened significantly when they faced a male opponent.
