So, which one of the gods was it who impelled the two to fight with each other in strife [eris]? It was [Apollo] the son of Leto and of Zeus. For he 10 [Apollo], infuriated at the king [Agamemnon], [Iliad.01.010] caused an evil disease to arise throughout the mass of warriors, and the people were getting destroyed, because the son of Atreus had dishonored Khrysēs his priest. Now Khrysēs had come to the ships of the Achaeans to free his daughter, and had brought with him a great ransom [apoina]: moreover he bore in his hand the 15 scepter of Apollo wreathed with a suppliant’s wreath [Iliad.01.015] and he besought the Achaeans, but most of all the two sons of Atreus, who were their chiefs. “Sons of Atreus,” he cried, “and all other Achaeans, may the gods who dwell in Olympus grant you to destroy the city of Priam, and to reach your homes in safety; 20 [Iliad.01.020] but free my daughter, and accept a ransom [apoina] for her, in reverence to Apollo, son of Zeus.”` Then the rest of the Achaeans with one voice were for respecting the priest and taking the ransom that he offered; but not so Agamemnon, son of Atreus [Iliad.01.025] who spoke fiercely to him and sent him roughly away. “Old man,” said 25 he, “let me not find you tarrying about our ships, nor yet coming hereafter. Your scepter of the god and your wreath shall profit you nothing. I will not free her. She shall grow old [Iliad.01.030] in my house at Argos far from her own home, busying herself with her loom and visiting my bed; so go, and do not provoke me or it shall be the worse for 30 you.”` The old man feared him and obeyed. Not a word he spoke, but went by the shore of the sounding sea [Iliad.01.035] and prayed apart to King Apollo, whom lovely fine-haired Leto had borne. “Hear me,” he cried, “O god of the silver bow, you who protects Khrysē and holy Killa and rules Tenedos with your might, hear me O Sminthian God of Plague 35 Apollo. If I have ever decked your temple with garlands, [Iliad.01.040] or burned your thigh-pieces in fat of bulls or goats, grant my prayer, and let your arrows avenge these my tears upon the Danaans.”` Thus did he pray, and Apollo heard his prayer. He came down furious from the summits of Olympus, [Iliad.01.045] with his bow and his quiver upon his shoulder, and the arrows rattled 40 on his back with the rage that trembled within him. He sat himself down away from the ships with a face as dark as night, and his silver bow rang death as he shot his arrow in the midst of them. [Iliad.01.050] First he smote their mules and their hounds, but presently he aimed his shafts at the people themselves, and all day long the pyres of the dead were 45 burning. For nine whole days he shot his arrows among the people, but upon the tenth day Achilles called them together in assembly - [Iliad.01.055] moved to do so by Hera, the white-armed goddess, who saw the Achaeans in their death-throes and had compassion upon them. Then, when they were assembled, fleet Achilles rose and spoke among them. “Son of Atreus,” said he, “I deem that we 50 should now [Iliad.01.060] turn roving home if we would escape destruction, for we are being cut down by war and pestilence at once. Let us ask some priest or prophet [mantis], or some reader of dreams (for dreams, too, are of Zeus) who can tell us why Phoebus Apollo is so angry, and say 55 [Iliad.01.065] whether it is for some vow that we have broken, or hecatomb that we have not offered, and whether he will accept the savor of lambs and goats without blemish, so as to take away the plague from us.”` With these words he sat down, and Kalkhas son of Thestor, wisest of seers, [Iliad.01.070] who knew things past present and to come, rose to speak. He it was who 60 had guided the Achaeans with their fleet to Ilion, through the prophecies with which Phoebus Apollo had inspired him. With all sincerity and goodwill he addressed them thus: “Achilles, beloved of Zeus, you bid me tell you about the [Iliad.01.075] anger [mēnis] of King Apollo, the Arch-Destroyer, I will therefore do so; but consider first and swear that you will stand by me heartily in word and deed, 65 for I know that I shall offend one who rules the Argives with might, to whom all the Achaeans are in subjection. [Iliad.01.080] A plain man cannot stand against the anger of a king, who even if he swallows his displeasure now, will yet nurse revenge till he has taken it. Consider, therefore, whether or not you will protect me.”` And Naspeuringen van Paul Theelen: Iliad Achilles, the great runner, answered, 70 [Iliad.01.085] “Fear not, but speak as it is given to you by the gods. I swear by Apollo, Kalkhas, to whom you pray, and whose oracles you reveal to us, that not a Danaan at our ships shall lay his hand upon you, while I yet live to look upon the face of the earth - [Iliad.01.090] no, not even if you name Agamemnon himself, who is by far the foremost 75 of the Achaeans.”` At that the brave seer [mantis] spoke boldly. “The god,” he said, “is not angry about either a vow or a hecatomb, but for his priest’s sake, whom Agamemnon has dishonored, [Iliad.01.095] in that he would neither free his daughter nor take a ransom [apoina] for her; therefore has he sent these pains [algea] upon us, and will yet send others. 80 He will not deliver the Danaans from this pestilence till Agamemnon has restored the girl without fee or ransom [apoina] to her father, and has sent a holy hecatomb [Iliad.01.100] to Khrysē. Thus we may perhaps appease him.”` With these words he sat down, and the warlord Agamemnon, son of Atreus, rose in anger. His heart was black with rage, and his eyes flashed fire 85 [Iliad.01.105] as he scowled at Kalkhas and said, “Seer [mantis] of evil, you never yet prophesied good things concerning me, but have always loved to foretell that which was evil. You have brought me neither comfort nor performance; and now you come prophesying among the Danaans, and saying [Iliad.01.110] that Apollo has plagued us because I would not take a ransom [apoina] 90 for this girl, the daughter of Khrysēs. I have set my heart on keeping her in my own house, for I prefer her to my own wife Clytemnestra, whom I courted when young, whose peer she is in [Iliad.01.115] both form and feature, in intelligence and accomplishments. Still I will give her up if I must, for I want the people to live, not die; but you must find 95 me a prize [geras] instead, or I alone among the Argives shall be without one. This is not well; [Iliad.01.120] for you see, all of you, that my prize [geras] is to go elsewhere.”` And swift godlike Achilles answered, “Most noble son of Atreus, covetous beyond all humankind, how shall the magnanimous Achaeans find you another prize [geras]? We have 100 no common store from which to take one. [Iliad.01.125] Those we took from the cities have been divided up; we cannot disallow the awards that have been made already. Give this girl, therefore, to the god, and if ever Zeus grants that we destroy the city of Troy we will requite you three and fourfold.”` 105 [Iliad.01.130] Then the warlord Agamemnon said, “Achilles, valiant though you be, you shall not thus get the better of me in matters of the mind [noos]. You shall not overreach and you shall not persuade me. Are you to keep your own prize [geras], while I sit tamely under my loss and give up the girl at your bidding? [Iliad.01.135] Let the Achaeans find me a prize [geras] in fair exchange to my 110 liking, or I will come and take your own, or that of Ajax or of Odysseus; and to whomsoever I may come shall regret my coming. [Iliad.01.140] But of this we will take thought hereafter; for the present, let us draw a ship into the sea, and find a crew for her expressly; let us put a hecatomb on board, and let us send Khrysēis of the lovely cheeks also; further, let some chief 115 man among us be in command, [Iliad.01.145] either Ajax, or Idomeneus, or godlike Odysseus, or yourself, son of Peleus, mighty warrior that you are, that we may offer sacrifice and appease the anger of the Arch-Destroyer god.”` Achilles scowled at him and answered, “You are steeped in insolence and lust of gain.

TC 2014; 6(2): 278–296 Corinne Pache Theban Walls in Homeric Epic DOI 10.1515/tc-2014-0015 Throughout the Iliad, the Greeks at Troy often refer to the wars at Thebes in their speeches, and several important warriors fighting on the Greek side at Troy also fought at Thebes and are related to Theban heroes who besieged the Boeotian city a generation earlier. The Theban wars thus stand in the shadow of the story of war at Troy, another city surrounded by walls supposed to be impregnable. In the Odyssey, the Theban connections are less central, but nevertheless significant as one of our few sources concerning the building of the Theban walls. In this essay, I analyze Theban traces in Homeric epic as they relate to city walls. Since nothing explicitly concerning walls remains in the extant fragments of the Theban Cycle, we must look to Homeric poetry for formulaic and thematic elements that can be connected with Theban epic.

Hackworth 2015 2 Abstract This dissertation is a study of the Epigraphical Hymn to Apollo that was found at Delphi in 1893, and since attributed to Athenaios. It is believed to have been performed as part of the Athenian Pythaïdes festival in the year 128/7 BCE. After a brief introduction to the hymn, I provide a survey and history of the most important editions of the text. I offer a new critical edition equipped with a detailed apparatus. This is followed by an extended epigraphical commentary which aims to describe the history of, and arguments for and and against, readings of the text as well as proposed supplements and restorations. The guiding principle of this edition is a conservative one—to indicate where there is uncertainty, and to avoid relying on other, similar, texts as a resource for textual restoration. A commentary follows, which traces word usage and history, in an attempt to explore how an audience might have responded to the various choices of vocabulary employed throughout the text. Emphasis is placed on Athenaios’ predilection to utilize new words, as well as words that are non-traditional for Apolline narrative. The commentary considers what role prior word usage (texts) may have played as intertexts, or sources of poetic resonance in the ears of an audience.

Zeus sent the goddesses to Paris, who judged that Aphrodite, as the "fairest", should receive the apple. In exchange, Aphrodite made Helen, the most beautiful Achilles tending the wounded Patroclus of all women and wife of Menelaus, fall in love with Paris, who (Attic red-figure kylix, c. 500 BC) took her to Troy. Par MARCO DI BRANco· Dans son recent recueil des inscriptions d' Athenes et de l' Attique, 1 Erkki Sironen a reedite deux textes provenants du "post-Herulian Wall" d' Athenes et relatifs a sa construction:2 le premier, decouvert pres d'une porte sur le flanc nord-est du rempart, mentionnait le nom de son batisseur: Illyrius;3 l'autre, retrouve sur le flanc occidental, est tres fragmentaire,4 mais devait certainement contenir lui aussi le nom d'Illyrius, identifie d'un commun accord avec le proconsul d' Achaia Claudius Illyrius - fils de l'archonte eponyme Claudius Teres et petit-fils du proconsul Claudius Leonticus5 - auquel la ville d' Athenes dedia deux statues honoraires sur l' Acropole.6 L'activite d'lllyrius est datee indiscutablement par rapport avec celle de l'epimeletes de ces deux dedicaces, Marcus Iounius Minucianus, que le lexique de Souida place epi Galienou.1 En outre, dans une inscription de Chypre, Illyrius est honore pour avoir rebati les fortifications de Lapethos;8 et a Corinthe il est celebre en qualite de gouvemeur, philosophe, batisseur et everge, t e. 9 En analysant ces donnees, nous entrevoyons le role de premier plan d'lllyrius dans l'organisation de la resistance antibarbare, et en meme temps 1 E. Helen, whose flight to Troy with the Trojan prince Paris had prompted the Greek expedition to seek revenge and reclaim her, is now home in Sparta, living harmoniously once more with her husband Meneláos (Menelaus). His brother Agamémnon, commander in chief of the Greek forces, was murdered on his return from the war by his wife and her paramour. Of the Greek chieftains who have survived both the war and the perilous homeward voyage, all have returned except Odysseus, the crafty and astute ruler of Ithaka (Ithaca), an island in the Ionian Sea off western Greece. Since he is presumed dead, suitors from Ithaka and other regions have overrun his house, paying court to his attractive wife Penélopê, endangering the position of his son, Telémakhos (Telemachus), corrupting many of the servants, and literally eating up Odysseus’ estate. Penélopê has stalled for time but is finding it increasingly difficult to deny the suitors’ demands that she marry one of them; Telémakhos, who is just approaching young manhood, is becom- ing actively resentful of the indignities suffered by his household. Many persons and places in the Odyssey are best known to readers by their Latinized names, such as Telemachus. The present translator has used forms (Telémakhos) closer to the Greek spelling and pronunciation.

    The Government of Troy: Politics in the "Iliad" Sale, William Merritt Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies; Spring 1994; 35, 1; ProQuest pg. 5 The Government of Troy: Politics in the Iliad William Merritt Sale N RECENTLY PUBLISHED STUDIES of Homeric formulae I have I called attention, on the basis of statistical evidence, to two facts about Homer's Trojans in the Iliad: (1) The nominative proper-name formulae used by the poet to refer to them display a remarkable lacuna: there are no frequently occurring, 'regular', formulae. 1 The other characters and peoples who are mentioned anything like as often as the Trojans all have regular formulae, usually more than one. We give the term 'regular formula' a quantitative definition, "exactly repeated six times or more," but the phenomenon is not mere­ ly quantitative; there are certain qualities that regular formulae have and that infrequently occurring formulae tend to lack. Most notable of these are their noun-epithet form (nominative proper-name noun-verb formulae all occur infrequently) and the occurrence of the formula in a major colon:2 frequently oc­ curring formulae are noun-epithet and occupy major cola; infre­ quent formulae fall in minor cola, and the less frequently they occur, the more likely they are to fall in minor cola and to be noun-verbal in syntax. Hence the distinction between regular and infrequent formulae is qualitative, and the Trojans in the nominative lack something they ought to have, noun-epithet formulae used regularly to fill metrical spaces that the other characters have formulae to fill.
