of all, our thoughts and best wishes are with Hitcham Post FirstbRࢆFHDIWHUWKHUREEHU\DQGZHDUHDOOWKDQNIXOQRRQHZDV hurt. The Committee would like to thank all the volunteers, The shop would not run without you. Well done and long may this last.

Things have been going really well in the shop. The till is starting to behave itself! I’m sure its a reincarnation of Arkwrights’ till in Open All Hours!! We have increased our stock and we are trying new products, Pakenham Mill Flour and Yum Yum Tree fudge being just two of them. We have increased our fruit and veg range. We are trying to get a little of everything you would need on a day to day basis.

We are keeping our prices competitive and are more often than not the same price if not a little cheaper than the supermarket. Most of our products are bought in already “Price Marked,” so they are the same as the big shops.

The Committee have been looking at FREE FROM foods and currently found a supplier that has a good range of these, so if you have any requests, pop in the shop this week and let one of your volunteers know and we’ll do our best to get it in stock.

Those of you who are fairly up on the technology will have noticed that the website has disappeared. It’s gone for a refurbishment and will be up and running in the very near future. I do try to keep you up to date with Facebook and its lovely to see you all respond.

If you think you’d like to help The Village Store, there are several ways you can do this. One is to volunteer some time and help in the store, or you can pick up a prospectus from the Store and take it away and read it and see if that is the way for you. Both Volunteer forms and prospectuses are available in the Store .

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Club members were seated classroom style to listen (and hopefully learn) the principles and art of planting and nurturing hanging baskets to be full of bloom in the summer. The skill and art of this popular form of gardening was described by Carol Bailey, the clubs head gardener. From the choice of basket lining to optimise compost moisture and retention, to plant selection and positioning with clever and helpful tips much appreciated by the audience. Carol stressed the need to keep baskets well-watered all summer. The purpose of the evening, other than the sharing of good gardening practice, was to encourage club members to construct a number of com- pleted baskets for inclusion in the Clubs annual plant sale (June 8th 2019) along with some for personal display. This practical work was enthusiastically carried out by many of the members, with help from Carol, encouraging the sharing of ideas. This event was new to the club and clearly enjoyed by all and, in the future, may include more practical aspects of gardening. This month’s competition, to produce a Spring Botanical Display from your garden, was reasonably entered, but could have been better, Once again Hilde Crapnell took the honours with a beautiful display, principally of late ࢉRZHULQJEXOEV Club chairman, Glynis Wash, thanked Carol for her excellent description, demonstration and pro- vision of such a variety of plants. June we celebrate our birthday. Well, the church does, as Pentecost is ,Qboften regarded as the birthday of the Christian church, and the start of the church’s mission to the world. So what does it mean? In the Acts of the Apostles, the book that follows the four gospels in the New Testament in the bible, we read an account of what happened to the disciples after Jesus had ascended into heaven following his resurrection from the dead.

Pentecost happens 50 days after Easter (the name comes from the Greek SHQWHNRVWHȅ࢈IWLHWKȆ ,WLVDFHOHEUDWLRQRIWKHGD\WKDWWKH+RO\6SLULWWKHWKLUG SDUWRIWKH7ULQLW\RI)DWKHU6RQDQG+RO\6SLULWFDPHXSRQWKHGLVFLSOHVRI -HVXV,WVRXQGHGOLNHDYHU\VWURQJZLQGDQGLWORRNHGOLNHWRQJXHVRI࢈UH And then the disciples found themselves speaking in foreign languages, in- VSLUHGE\WKH+RO\6SLULW3HRSOHSDVVLQJE\DW࢈UVWWKRXJKWWKDWWKH\PXVWEH drunk, but the disciple Peter told the crowd that the disciples were full of the +RO\6SLULWȁQRWVSLULWVRIWKHDOFRKROLFYDULHW\

This year Pentecost falls on 9th June, and on 16th June we celebrate Trinity 6XQGD\7ULQLW\LVDOODERXW*RGDVWKUHHSHUVRQV)DWKHU6RQDQG+RO\6SLULW 0DQ\SHRSOH࢈QGWKH7ULQLW\FRQIXVLQJȁHYHQWKRVHRIXVZKRSUHDFKRQLW regularly!

All in all June is a great month for celebrating, for getting together and sharing food and fun. I hope to see you at our patronal service at St Peter’s on 30th June at 10am, when we can celebrate the saint who I am calling ‘the people’s saint’!

Yours in Jesus Christ,

22 Felsham & Gedding Village News, Issue 185, June 2019 Village Allotments

my last allotment bulletin there has been a great deal of Sinceb‘communal’ work done on the allotments. Grass cut, plots rotovated, hedges trimmed and various plots prepared for the next occu- pants.

Current allotment holders have been very busy on the land with the result that all is looking rather immaculate, well not quite immaculate, but very tidy and productive. Lots of seedlings & transplants being swapped or given away by the enthusiastic gardeners.

7KHUHDUHVWLOODIHZ࢈YHH[DFWO\VWDUWHUSORWVUHDG\IRUSHRSOHWRWDNHRQ when they join the Felsham allotment community.

I must admit to making a bad mistake in my May bulletin, namely that I put the annual fee per allotment at £12, Oh dear!, it is actually £15 per full plot and £7.50 for a half plot. But, as a concession because the ‘season’ is well advanced, the half plots will only be £5. A pint of beer costs almost as much and you can’t grow many vegetables in a pint pot!!!!!

Felsham & Gedding Village News, Issue 185, June 2019 25 OVO Energy Women’s Tour 2019

cycle racing is coming to Gedding and Felsham on Monday Eliteb10th June, as the OVO Energy Women’s Tour passes through our villages during stage one of the six stage race, on its way from Beccles to Stowmarket.

The Women’s Tour has, in just a few years, grown to become of the most important races on the UCI Women’s World Tour calendar, second only to the Giro Rosa (Women’s Tour of Italy) and is an opportunity to see world class racing pass by our front doors.

/LQLQJXSRQWKHVWDUWOLQHWKLV\HDUZLOOEHQROHVVWKDQ࢈YHIRUPHUZLQQHUV of the race and at least two former world road race champions, including Lizzie Deignan and Marianne Vos, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest cyclists, man or woman, of all time.

The 98 mile stage is scheduled to set out from Beccles at 10:30am and is due to arrive in Gedding between 1:50 and 14:30, depending on the speed of the riders. On the opposite page you can see a map of the entire route plus an extract from the race schedule, so if you’re planning to to come out and support the riders you know where to be and when.
