FROM THE PRESIDENT…

Winter footy at its best. How brave were all the kids playing footy. The day was cold and wet but that didn’t deter them.

After Match - Our under 10 age group hosted the after match – Burgers on the menu – Big thank you to Chris Hickey and family for donating all. Thank you to all parents, players and families that helped out. Considering the arctic conditions, not a great turn out, this Sunday’s weather prediction is Sunny and 14, would be great to see a big crowd. Hope to see you al there.

Poker Night –17 July - Thanks to Paul Shaw who organised a great event last year and again has put his hand up to organise this year. Not too late to book in advance or simply pay on the night. It is a great night for mums and dads. Last year it was won by a mum from our club, let see if the mums can win 2 years running. Invites are to all members and non members.

Match Day Behaviour: - Thank you to all parents, official and players. Although not totally perfect our Match Day Behaviour and rating has dramatically improved. Keep up the good work.

Go Hawks Tony Ferracane

Club Applies to Host SMJFL Finals

This season the club has once again decided to apply to host finals in the first week of the finals on August 16. It is a great opportunity to raise the profile of the club within the league as well as to generate additional funds through canteen and food stall sales.

We will require a number of volunteers on the day to assist with all the duties required of the host club. We will need volunteers to help with ground setup, operating the canteen and any additional food stalls, sale of footy records, scoreboard, a ground manager and cleaning of rooms throughout the day.

More information will follow once we are advised by the league which age groups and divisions we will be hosting.

Are you or do you know a Telstra Employee?

If so you can assist our club to obtain a $1,200 Telstra Kids Grant and there is basically nothing for the Telstra employee to do. The employee does not even need to be connected directly to our club; just willing to do a good deed to help a community club like ours. All the Telstra employee needs to do is click a button to submit the grant application, and the club will do the rest.

We successfully applied for a Telstra Kids Grant in an earlier grant round last year through Lyn Moore. We used the grant money to purchase additional training equipment such as agility poles, tackle and ruck bags and coaches mats for both Columbia Park and Lum Reserve.

If you know somebody or require further information please contact Lindsay Moore ([email protected] or 0417 358 342). Details about the Telstra Kids Grant can be found at telstrakidsfund.com

Round 9 Match Reports

Under 9 Brown Waverley Park Hawks v Mordialloc Braeside Coaches Award: Will Price

Our first quarter at Lum Reserve started off great with a strong midfield, Luca’s ruck work getting the ball to Will, James and Dean who were then able to cleanly pick up the wet and slippery ball and deliver it into our forward line.

Second quarter the boys realised what it was like to play a winter sport. Started to get cold but were still pumped as Patrick with his speed, Angus, Thomas, George and Biraj who all played a strong 2nd qtr gave our forwards more of a chance to kick goals.

Third quarter was a bit more challenging as hands were now numb and ball getting heavier and more slippery saw our back line finally get a run with Isac, Harry, Josh, Ryder and Elliot playing a great defensive qtr only allowing Mordi/Brae to score 1 goal.

The fourth quarter had Hunter finishing with a lazy 3 goals and with Jesse, Sebastian, Isaac again strong in the midfield saw our boys to a great finish.

We can see our boys improving every week and it showed in the game they played on Sunday and it’s great to hear them sing the club song after a great game!

Well done boys.

BUON Print Solutions Under 9 Gold Waverley Park Hawks v Ashwood

In conditions that represented Antarctica, the Golds visited Ashwood for an epic clash. Whilst the conditions were more than testing, the resolve of the boys was just as strong.

Dane gave a great display of determination and persistence in his best game this year with some strong work on the ball and racked up the kicks and he was joined by Tanas, who also had a breakout game and showed some running footy with long kicks on a day that would normally prohibit such footy. Ed was his normal solid self and was great at both ends, showing excellent versatility, as was Nikolas who had a great first half before falling ill and leaving at half time. Our Captains for the day, in Luke and Ethan, both lead the way and showed great determination all day with Luke snapping a super goal and Ethan producing constant second and third efforts. Ethan even filled a void when injury hit and we needed him most.

Noah seemed to love the damp ground and used his pace to get to good positions all over the ground and kicked really long to the ‘hot spot’. Lachlan S showed great courage to fight illness to not only soldier on, but to really help us get back in the game and gain one of the two weekly awards. Thomas F and Zac held up well in defence, pushed us into attack and both tackled relentlessly. Lucas seemed to love the extended time in the midfield, dodging and weaving and providing an avenue to goal. Izac has grown each week and is really reading the play well and roving the packs like a veteran. Nash coped well against some really tall opposition forwards after playing a great forward role himself. Nicholas again was stingy in defence and tackled hard and guarded the last line of defence excellently. Lachlan B was a real live wire and gathered numerous possessions at both ends and was also a worthy recipient of the weekly award.

Daniel played with great heart and didn’t let the conditions beat him and was instrumental in getting us in a winning position with great all round play. Jonathan and Josh both used their size to advantage and got ‘in and under’ to fight for the ball and kick us forward regularly. Cooper was bobbing up everywhere and racked up a heap of possessions and kicked amazingly long with a wet ball. Thomas Mc read the ball well in defence then provided a good avenue up forward when we needed some fresh legs.

Sam was incredible with his wet weather skills, marking the ball like it was dry and kicking long to other team mates, while Franki played the game of his life and showed that dogged determination and sheer effort goes a long way, particularly in terrible conditions and was a deserved winner of the award from the Ashwood coach.

All in all, we were very proud of all the Under 9 Golds this week, even more than normal. They showed a great team ethic on a tough, tough, day.

Under 10 Brown Waverley Park Hawks v East Malvern Coaches Award: Adam Saliba and Christian Gallucio

WPH Under 10 Browns travelled down the M1 to East Malvern footy club on a cold wet morning. The rain was coming in sideways when the game started and pretty much everyone, including the coach, was shivering in the cold!

But in the freezing conditions the under 10 Browns approached every contest from the first bounce with aggression and energy. We were getting first to the ball, we were keeping our feet, and we were giving the ball to someone in a better position. We were executing the basics really well. And if we didn't get our hands on it first, we were tackling our opponents fiercely in an attempt to try and win the ball back. A fabulous effort from all the boys for four quarters. All the mums and dads were so proud of your effort. Well done! Coaches awards this week went to Adam Saliba and Christian Gallucio. Congratulations boys! TOP OF DOCUMENT

AAV Tiling Under 10 Gold Waverley Park Hawks v Ormond Coaches Award: Mitch W, Damon H

The Hawks played at home against Murrumbeena in Arctic conditions. Our defenders had to work overtime as the opposition revelled in the conditions and had us on the back foot early. Damon provided a great contest and continued to play in front and was well supported by Brady E. We finally got some good ball moving forward with Evan combining well with Orlando in the mids who found Max in the forward line. A nice kick into the attacking zone found Peter playing in front and taking the mark. He went back to kick a nice long goal and get us on the board. Daniel was also working hard and at the bottom of several packs feeding the ball out. Murrumbeena stepped it up in the second quarter and really showed us what desperate wet weather footy was about. We had no answer as they put on three goals. Harper tried his best in the ruck and we finally got the ball moving forward through Max. His quick kick into the forward line was well roved by Josh who snapped a goal just on the siren.

This gave us some momentum into the break but the boys were given a rev up as there were too many passengers. They were asked for a massive lift in the second half and came out full of running. Shilo and Brady P were everywhere in the midfield and Harry started to find some ball. The forwards worked overtime at locking the ball in and were well led by Damon and Mitch. Shilo got on the end of a loose ball in the midfield and found Cam wide open. His long kick into full forward found Jacob on the lead. He went back and converted the set shot and our one goal five behinds for the quarter

7 waverley park hawks weekly newsletter

had us nipping at the heels of our opponents. The boys had some run in their legs now and continued this on in the fourth. Mitch played an outstanding quarter and continually pumped the ball into the forward line. We continued to pepper the goals but it was a fine intercept mark from Brody who found Pat in close range that the boys got the reward for their efforts. The game was still fiercely contested and Ryan showed great courage to get the ball forward again where Orlando snapped a nice goal to seal the game. A good lesson for the boys to come out and play no matter what the conditions or who the opponent is. TOP OF DOCUMENT

Executive Security Solutions Under 11 Waverley Park Hawks 0.4.4 defeated by Hampton Rovers 7.9.51 Goal Kickers: Best Players: Nathan, Hunter, Tommy W, Kobi, Lachie T & Blake Coaches Award: Tommy Warner & Hunter Morgan

This week we travelled to Hampton to take on Hampton Rovers and the gods turned on the best day of the year. It was cold, the ground was wet and then the rain came as soon as the boys ran out onto the field. Once the game started, it was clear that Hampton were going to be hard at the ball. Their attack was first rate and the boys found this a little intimidating. The boys struggled with their field kicking, and did not adjust to the wet conditions with their ball handling. Tommy W, Hunter and Nathan were outstanding in the first quarter but we again had difficulty with our manning up and this gave Hampton a number of opportunities where they had two and three unmanned players. Quarter Time scores were WPH 0 to Hampton Rovers 1.2.8.

The second quarter went the same as the first, Hampton continued with their attack on the contest regularly bumping our boys who were not prepared for this physical side of the game. AJ and Kobi were working hard in defence and the midfield was moving the ball forward. For all our efforts we were breaking down in the forward line. Lochie T, Harvey and Jackson were trying hard in the forward line but our skills were letting us down, with dropped marks and poor kicks and our inability to master the conditions like being in front of our opponents. Again we were caught out with loose players and that enabled Hampton to score. Half time scores WPH 0.0 to Hampton 4.3.27.

At half time we tried to restart the game and I tried to get the boys to focus on their skills and to work harder in the wet weather and for the first 10 minutes of the third quarter the ball stayed in our forward line but unfortunately we could only score behinds. It was clear that for all their efforts the wet weather was causing a large number of skill errors. The effort of the boys was much better but we were still struggling in the forward line. The score at three quarter time WPH 0.4 to Hampton 6.4.

The final quarter was a carbon copy of the second, the play was fairly even but we continued to make plenty of mistakes and were down in the forward line. Final scores WPH 0.4 to Hampton 7.9.

The boys found this week’s conditions really challenging and it showed the need to work harder at training on our kicking and defence skills, and getting prepared for a physical nature of the game. On the positive every player had moments where they were effective in the game so we just need to work harder to get more of those moments.

See you at training.

Under 12 Girls Waverley Park Hawks v Prahran

Today’s match was the best so far for the girls this season. We played against Prahran at Como Park at 11.15am. As you are all aware it was bitterly cold, didn’t stop raining, and was very challenging, especially for those experiencing these conditions for the first time ever. The girls were brilliant for all four quarters only allowing 2 goals for the match and kicking eight goals themselves. They are really starting to gel together as a team now and regularly look for each other when in possession.

As usual they tackled harder and ran more than the opposition and today they got the reward for their determination and hard work. Bellami was awarded the best player. All of the girls deserved a medal.

Well done girls!

The Gunn Electrics U12 Brown love the wet and in Round 11 playing Ajax we got that and more. In difficult conditions Buzz and Will led out the team with Matty J in his 50th game. All captains stood up in their role and led by example. It was a tough tight contest early but with Ajax not having a full side they had to borrow one each quarter. Well done to Flynn, Cooper, Dimi and Dylan for putting their hand up and having a red hot go for the other team.

Charlie was providing great run and options on the wing, Buzz was pushing the ball forward and JoshK and Jake were mopping up in the backline. Just before half time Josh B had a great run and slotted through our second goal to go 7 points up. After hands were dipped in the warm water at half time, we requested a big effort from all in the third and the backline led by Anthony, Dimi, Noah, Nick and Flynn held Ajax scoreless. With Ryan dominating in the ruck and giving Cayden and Will first use we pumped the ball in the forward line, putting on great pressure and slotting through 4 goals for the team. Cooper kicked his first goal for the year as did Nick who marked strongly to put through a major while Buzz was lively kicking two goals for the game and Matty J kicked a goal in his 50th game,. The last quarter was a tight tussle but we again won the quarter to enjoy a great win. Congratulations to Matty J on his 50th game and he showed the usual versatility, hard running and courageous effort as he does every week he plays.

Coaches awards today went to Charlie Peake, Ryan Dean and Josh Kolak. Charlie produced a great running game on the wing, linking up plenty of times and providing a great option. Ryan Dean turned the game rucking in the 3rd quarter, giving us first use of the ball as well as being strong in the air and in the contested ball. Finally, Josh Kolak set up in the right positions and repelled numerous forward thrusts from Ajax, he was strong overhead and around the ground providing plenty of run. Well done to all!

The boys enjoyed singing the song again and we take this fantastic effort into next week. Go Hawks!

Under 12 Gold Waverley Park Hawks 9.5.59 defeated Port Melbourne Cults 3.3.21 Goal Kickers: Ethan P 2, Mackenzie S 1, Ty M 1, Nicholas M 1, Deakin H 1, Jordan S 1, Michael A 1, Bailey R 1 Best Players: Michael A, Brayden A, Kobi B, Mackenzie S, Deakin H, Ethan P Coaches Award: Michael Adams, Brayden A

Last weekend conditions were pretty tough to play in, at one moment I'm sure I saw a penguin in the centre. Yes it was cold & wet!!

Players did their warm up inside the club rooms & worked in close to get them revved/warmed up, then out we went lead by our 50 game players, Michael A, Mackenzie S, Kobi B & Brayden A.

All players were on the move from the first bounce with the first two goals kicked by WPH, however, Port Melbourne had other ideas & crawled back to be even by the end of the first quarter.

Going into the second quarter we concentrated on the team disciplines such as maintaining the wall in defence plus centre, manning up & moving the ball quickly/accurately just as we practised at training. Half time came & all players ran into the club rooms to defrost.

During half time break the vibe was positive & players wanted to finish the game. We discussed & reviewed first half of the game, then agreed on a plan for the second half. Once again they were revved up but I think this was a result of them defrosting, eating all the oranges & all sugared up after eating 300 Snakes lol.

Start of the 3rd quarter I started using the bench, my small brigade were sitting on the bench, reason for this was that the ball would get heavier, players getting tired would result in the ball hitting the deck where my small players would swoop up & kick goals.

So, we kicked on & finally my small players got their chance resulting in scoring shots.

We came home strong, our defence kept them scoreless & set up our forwards. Great win specially under the wet, windy, cold & dark conditions.

Once again congratulations to our 50 gamers, coaches award, goal kickers but a big thanks to all the players for playing the game in good spirits - proud of you hawkers!

Where do I start? It was a torrid day with rain and the chill factor - that was the only bad part. The good - watching our boys go out and prove to themselves, their club, and their parents that they are what we always believed in - a great team.

Before the game we talked about commitment, not to get drawn into Prahrans tactics, playing as a team, focus, effort and being switched on from the first bounce - and they did it all - and more.

In the first qtr we matched them in scoring shots, second qtr we beat them in scoring shots, and the last half kept them scoreless.

We smashed them at the contested footy and shut them down totally. In the last qtr we locked the ball into our half of the ground and never looked back. They threw themselves into every contest and fought hard and tough and never gave up, providing effort over and over.

In this game they used all of the skills and determination that we have been practising at training every week.

Every single player contributed to the final result - it was amazing to watch and see them basically command the play, and every one of those boys should be extremely proud of themselves as individuals, and as a team.

A special mention goes out to the U12 boys who came and filled in for us as well.

Boys - we are a team, and we played as a team. I am extremely proud of you all and it is a day that will be remembered for a long time.

Action Aluminium Under 13 Gold Waverley Park Hawks 4. 5.29 defeated by Mordialloc Braeside 5.5.35 Goal Kickers: Andrew Saliba 2, Samson Cimino 1, Lucas Perez 1 Best Players: Lachlan Jenkins, Jordan McDonnell, Nathan Crosthwaite, Angus Bailey, Samson Cimino, Carl Mariette Coaches Award: Jordan McDonnell, Angus Bailey Captain: Kyle Harris Team Mate Award: Nathan Crosthwaite

The Action Aluminium Under 13s were unlucky against one of the two unbeaten sides in our division after leading pretty much all day and with the scores level with 30 seconds to play.

Our bench was lined with injured players from physical encounters in difficult conditions, and those left standing fought hard and challenged a skilful team that was well drilled in spreading from rebounds out of defence. We can learn a great deal not only about the opposition, but ourselves and that we are as good as any other team in the competition on our day, we just need to remain disciplined and team focused.

Lachlan Jenkins setup a huge number of centre clearances and was superb around the ground leading the way for our boys, he was ably supported at full back by Angus Bailey who repelled attack after attack, Nathan Crosthwaite absorbed the oppositions reckless tactics and really stood up with the commitment and courage we know he can deliver at times – we just need this great stuff every week, Samson and Carl worked hard in the ruck trying to give our boys the advantage at stoppages and Jordan McDonnell ran hard, presented well and tried his guts out all day. It was a solid team performance with contributors all over the ground … we can hold our heads high based on this performance, we tried hard and never threw the towel in and in my opinion were the better team on the day.

Up against good opposition the boys were relentless and tough. With only 18 players all the boys were contributors to what was a very good win. Johnno and JJ were again very good and handled the conditions very well.

Eric Jackson was awesome at CHF and Dom played one of his best games. For someone who is so slight he has amazing strength.

The backs were resolute and let nothing past and the forwards worked hard to keep the ball in our forward line.

Jay Spiteri in his 50th game was best on field with an outstanding performance and thrived in the conditions. Well done Jay and congratulations on your 50th.

An excellent team performance and great result considering the conditions, consistency over the next 4 weeks will be the key.

Well done boys! TOP OF DOCUMENT

On a freezing and wet day at Columbia the boys battled through to come out victorious in a very scrappy affair. An amazing game in the middle of the ground by Will and Shaun coupled by the Cappello brothers putting in their best games of the season allowed the boys to just hold on in a crucial game. A hard week on the track will leave us in good stead for the rest of the season as we strive to win our first premiership.

Well done Hawks!!!!!

Under 15 Gold Waverley Park Hawks 8.7.55 defeated Mordialloc Braeside 1.11.17 Goal Kickers: Francis Connolly 2, Andrew Beer 1, Jaxon Gervasoni 1, Jackson Dean 1, Jake Gasper 1, Bobby McGivern 1, Kyle Viccars 1 Best Players: Jaxon Gervasoni, Ausbert Tellis, Francis Connolly, Lachie McDonnell, Jake Gasper, Starsy Gountras, Troy Hanning Coaches Award: Troy Hanning, Starsy Gountras, Lachie McDonnell

A really strong win in atrocious conditions against last year’s premiers – Mordialloc Braeside. The boys dominated the game from the get go and it was a terrific effort to keep the high powered Mordy to only one goal for the game. All semblances of game plans were thrown out the window due to the conditions. The only thing that mattered was who would play the tougher, stronger, gutsier footy for longer would win the game. We did that in spades with every player committing to every contest and the bruising and soreness that comes with it in a game like weather threw at us.

Jaxon Gervasoni led the way and was simply outstanding. Last of the bottom of every pack, he continually drove the ball forward for us or killed every contest that we couldn’t win. He is a delight to coach, with his team first mentality and it was a great reward that he snagged a classic rovers goal with his opposite foot early in the third quarter. Starsy Gountras who has worked his backside off to overcome several obstacles this year, was fantastic in the ruck with his bullocking work and dedication to the job he needed to play. Lachie McDonnell has missed half the season due to State volleyball commitments but controlled the game when the ball was in his vicinity.

Troy Hanning tagged the competition’s Best and Fairest winner from last year and completely nullified him again for the second time this year. Troy’s concentration and work rate top never gave the opposition star time or space were a delight to see. Troy knew exactly when to attack and when to defend and played the role that we need him to do for us. Francis Connolly and Aussie Tellis get the job done every week for us and Jake Gasper was terrific all round the ground with his work rate. The only dampener (pardon the pun) was the hamstring injury to out star onballer Kyle Viccars. The good thing is Kyle has plenty of time to get the hammy right before finals start in a month. We will miss him but need him when the finals roll around so no risk will be taken with him.

With three games remaining we sit on top of the division 1 ladder. A monumental achievement for this side and for our club. We need to win two of our remaining three games to ensure a double chance and a shot at a very elusive division 1 premiership for our football club.

Under 16 Waverley Park Hawks 8.16.64 defeated Ormond 0.7.7 Goal Kickers: Taine 4, Adrian 2, Bradie 1, James T 1 Best Players: Taine, Jack G, Chris, James W, Riley, Jackson, James T, Bradley, & Tom W Coaches Award: Chris Frencken & Jack Gallagher

What an ordinary day for football, but what a great day for our boys. Every one of them adapted to the conditions very early and the results were evident very early. The boys were prepared to bend over and pick up the ball in wet and slippery conditions and also played to instruction by keeping the ball moving forward at every possible opportunity. They smothered and scrapped at every contest and as we came in at three quarter time were very keen to not concede a goal for the day. Well done to the backline who continually repelled our opposition and got the ball moving forward as quickly and as direct as possible. Our forwards worked hard and with a little more luck our 24 scoring shots could have been a little more balanced. Well done once again boys, I’m loving the spirit and feeling of TEAM first within the group. TOP OF DOCUMENT

Under 17 Waverley Park Hawks 3.11.29 defeated St Peters 4.4.28 Goal Kickers: Joel Welsford, Joe Galluccio, Mitch D’Angelo Best Players: Joel Welsford, Max Rundle, Mitch D’Angelo, Jayden Brown, Sheldon Connolly, Joe Galluccio, Nathan Antonucci, Luke Beteramia, Alistair Bailey, Finn Bloomer, Marc Urban Coaches Award: Luke Beteramia & Nathan Antonucci

In blizzard like conditions the Mazenod OCFC Under 17s took on St Peters at Centenary Oval. Skills went out the window today and the victor would be the team that simply wanted the game more. St Peters were that team for most of the first half and they had much desire for the footy and were prepared to put their bodies in and took a well-deserved 9 point lead into half time. In these conditions, that was a decisive lead and the Hawks really need to lift our appetite for the contest if we were going to win the game and that is exactly what we did. We matched St Peters’ intensity at the footy and the game started to swing our way in the second half. Goals were at a premium as we began to give ourselves scoring opportunities throughout the second half. It took till the last 10 minutes of the last quarter for the Hawks to finally kick the goal to put us in front. From there, the boys were magnificent as St Peters threw everything at us, but we managed to hold on by a point for a fantastic win. Both teams should be commended for their efforts in atrocious conditions and really a draw would have been a fitting result for both teams.

Well done boys on a huge win.

Coaches Awards: Luke Beteramia & Nathan Antonucci – both boys finished off two/three weeks of really good footy to earn the Coaches award today. Both have become really important role players for the team and are able to slot into numerous positions with their versatility – well done boys.
