Annual Report 2015-16 Melbourne Cricket Club ANNUAL REPORT 2015-16 MELBOURNE CRICKET CLUB MCC Annual Report 2015/16 1 Our mission Melbourne Cricket Club is a private club with public responsibilities. It has two primary roles: Ŷ Managing the MCG as the world’s best stadium for all people. Ŷ Providing the best services and facilities to its members while ensuring our unique sporting culture and heritage are enhanced and appreciated. STRATEGIC VISION The club’s strategic direction is underpinned by the following dimensions: 1. Engage and manage MCC membership. 2. Destination MCG – giving people more reasons to visit, more often. 3. World-class facilities. In achieving these initiatives, we recognise that we must continue to deliver excellence in all of our core operations. Our values RESPECT The club prides itself on the respect and esteem it has earnt over its long and prestigious history. As staff, we respect our work colleagues, their abilities and views. We work as a team towards a common goal. By pursuing excellence and using our people to constantly deliver on our promises, we will earn the respect of our colleagues, stakeholders, customers and the wider community. PEOPLE People are the most important asset in our organisation. Our staff feel important through a variety of recognition programs and initiatives and are immensely proud of their involvement at such an iconic venue. Our staff enjoy their time at work and are recognised in a variety of ways for their performance. Integrity, honesty, loyalty and teamwork are the keys to providing a memorable customer service experience for our patrons and members. HERITAGE We will continue to develop the MCG into one of the world’s finest sporting stadiums and Australia’s greatest sporting icon, drawing on our history to reinforce its image as the People’s Ground. The club’s history, its rich and vast heritage collection and its culture will be observed, preserved and displayed for our members and visitors to savour.     One of the Boys: The (Gendered) Performance of My Football Career Ms. Kasey Symons PhD Candidate 2019 The Institute for Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities (ISILC), Victoria University, Australia. Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Abstract: This PhD via creative work comprises an exegesis (30%) and accompanying novel, Fan Fatale (70%), which seek to contribute a creative and considered representation of some women who are fans of elite male sports, Australian Rules football in particular. Fictional representations of Australian Rules football are rare. At the time of submission of this thesis, only three such works were found that are written by women aimed to an older readership. This project adds to this underrepresented space for women writing on, and contributing their experiences to, the culture of men’s football. The exegesis and novel creatively addresses the research question of how female fans relate to other women in the sports fan space through concepts of gender bias, performance, and social surveillance. Applying the lens of autoethnography as the primary methodology to examine these notions further allows a deeper, reflexive engagement with the research, to explore how damaging these performances can be for the relationships women can have to other women. In producing this exegesis and accompanying novel, this PhD thesis contributes a new and creative way to explore the gendered complications that surround the sports fan space for women. My novel, Fan Fatale, provides a narrative which raises questions about the complicit positions women can sometimes occupy in the name of fandom and conformity to expected gendered norms.

On listening, acoustic violence and the booing of Adam Goodes Poppy de Souza Adjunct Research Fellow, Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia ABSTRACT At the height of public debate surrounding the sustained booing of Indigenous AFL footballer Adam Goodes between 2013 and 2015, several media commentators routinely misheard the roar of the crowd as nothing other than acceptable social behaviour. To ears invested in the established order, the distinction between a ‘boo’ and a ‘boo’ is non-existent; to racialized others, like Adam Goodes, hearing the difference – and calling it out – is an act of resistance, sovereignty, and survival. Taking the booing of Adam Goodes as its starting point, this paper argues for a notion of political listening that attends to the sonic and sonorous histories of racial violence without displacing, or indeed replicating, its wounding effects. I consider the entangled relationship between sound, power and violence, moving beyond the sporting field to examine other acoustic territories where struggles for sovereignty, power and racial justice are playing out. By attending to the ways sound is unevenly deployed to target, silence, assimilate or oppress others along racial lines, this paper hopes to unsettle the listening logic and privileged position of the white, settler-colonial ear, to expose the norms of attention that

It seems like only yesterday that we conducted our Tasmanian Team of the Century dinner in 2004, followed by our inaugural Hall of Fame induction dinner in 2005. This is just another example of how quickly a decade passes by when you work in an industry as dynamic as Australian Football. Over this decade 277 individuals have entered our Hall of Fame ‘club’ as inductees. We have elevated 40 of these men to Legend status and further elevated just 14 to become Icons of Tasmanian Football. To be one of just 14 Icons to have been identified in over 149 years of the game being played in Tasmania is very special indeed.

First and foremost, the Australian Press Council celebrated its 40th anniversary with a major international conference on press freedom in Sydney in May 2016. The conference was a huge success, bringing together all parts of the news media in Australia to discuss the critical issues facing us. The Conference was very well-supported by Council members and other sponsors, enabling us to fly in a number of international journalism stars to add a richness and gravitas to the occasion. (See Chapter 5 and Appendix 6.) When the Council was first established in 1976, it was a fragile body. Few paediatricians would have given it 40 years or more to live. There have certainly been ups and down over the decades, but the Council is now firmly fixed in the media landscape and playing a very active and positive role in the interests of both publishers and the general community. The Press Council’s first Strategic Plan All Press Council members and Secretariat staff engaged in a highly collegial process to develop, workshop and finally approve the organisation’s first ever Strategic Plan, covering 2016-2020.
