Confirmation of nomination: Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba OFR, SAN, (Senate Leader): "That the SENATE do CONSIDER the request of MR PRESIDENT, COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, for the CONFIRMATION of the nomination of MINKAILA ABDULLAHI (Jigawa State) as RESIDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER in the INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION (INEC)" in accordance with Section 14(2)(a) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria" (As Amended). MOTION 1. Demise of Admiral Augustus Akhabue Aikhomu (GCON) Sen. Odion Ugbesia (Edo Central) Co-Sponsors: Sen. Ehigie Edobor Uzamere (Edo South) Sen. Domingo Obende (Edo North) THE SENATE, NOTES with heavy heart, the death of former Chief of General Staff and Vice President, Admiral Augustus Akhabue Aikhomu on Wednesday 17th of August, 2011 at the age of 72 years; NOTES also that Admiral Augustus Akhabue Aikhomu was born on October 20th, 1939 in Irrua, Edo State; NOTES further that Admiral Augustus Akhabue Aikhomu enlisted into the Nigerian Navy on 1st December, 1958 and worked hard to attain the pinnacle of his military career and as a politician, he was the chairman, Board of Trustees of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); PRINTED BY NATIONAL ASSEMBLY PRESS, ABUJA 41 Wednesday, 14th September, 2011 26 RECALLS with delight that, Aikhomu significantly raised the bar in information sharing with the governed. He was liberal with information, on regular basis he briefed the press on developments in government business; AWARE that Admiral Aikhomu's life was defined by virtues of hard work, commitment and loyalty. He was a conscientious and dutiful officer who was in all respect admirably equipped for his roles in the military and the larger society. He was conferred with the National Honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON); . NOTES that he will be fondly remembered for the role he played in the creation of Edo State in August 1990; OBSERVES also that Admiral Aikhomu served the country in various capacities, thus; (i) Commanding Officer shore Patrol Crafts; (ii) Commanding Officer, NNS Dorima; (iii) Chief of personnel, naval Headquarters; (iv) Chief of Naval Operations, 1983-1984; (v) Chief of Naval Staff, 1984-1986; and (vi) Chief of General Staff and Vice President, 1986-1993; CONVINCED that the Late Admiral Aikhomu was a man of many parts, his commitments and contributions to the evolution of a strong Super eagles team in the early 1990's facilitated the country winning the African Nation's Cup and participating in the World Cup for the first time in 1994; FURTHER A WARE that Admiral Aikhomu was a generous loving family man, an unrepentant advocate of Social Justice , peace and dialogue. Even against his military background he always preferred the banner of peace and dialogue to any other option; FURTHER A WARE that his death is a grave loss, not only to my Edo Central Senatorial District and Edo State but to the nation as a whole. Accordingly resolves to: i. OBSERVE one minute silence in honour of Late Admiral Augustus Akhabue Aikhomu; ii. SEND a delegation of this distinguished chamber to condole with his family, the people and government of Edo State; and iii. CALL on the Federal Government to immortalise him.
