As tensions continued to mount throughout Europe following the assassination of the heir to the Austrian Empire Franz Ferdinand and his wife on 28 June, four weeks later on Saturday 25 July three local rowing clubs, the Avon, the Bristol Ariel and the Clifton combined to organise the ‘Henley of the West’ at Saltford.
