His Wombania by Peter Marinacci legacy will live on through his distinctive art that is a treasure to Yukon and Canada.” Harrison’s artwork is displayed around the world in public and private collections including at the University of Victoria, the Government of Yukon Main Administration Building and the Prime Minister’s residence in Ottawa. He received the Order of Canada for his contribution to Canadian culture, however the National Gallery of Canada has yet to add Harrison’s work to their revered collection. “In 2009, the National Gallery of Canada was asked to add Mr. Harrison’s work to their collection to capture the full range of Canada’s art, including Yukon,” Premier Pasloski added. “Today, we call on the gallery to revisit their decision and acquire his work, which reflects the entire Yukon. He is an iconic figure in the Canadian art scene and Canadians deserve to have artwork from across our nation on display in our national collection.” P6 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 2015 THE KLONDIKE SUN YOOP Hall packed beyond capacity and cleared by Fire Chief as McDiarmid jury selection gets under way

Poetry He laughs and he jumps seemingly with joy Authors submissions Every time my lead dog is a boy. I don’t see him much any more. I wonder if he’s feeling sore.

Maybe he’s just a waiting for me To join him later, wait and see. on 8th Ninety years passed since I first seen him And maybe by now my eyes have dimmed.

I’m no longer on that claim. Living in town is my new aim. 2014 But I must admit, I can feel him at my back What else is there that I lack?

I am ready to join my friend The Miner’s Specter Maybe tonight is the end. By Al Sider, Dawson City As daylight approaches he feels like a porter. Wide awake the whole night through The Night that He filled his belly with left over stew. Many years ago, when I was but a lad He went back to the hole, no specter in sight. Digger Dan Died I heard a tale which made me to feel afraid, lonely By Isabel Coles, Bristol, England and sad. He dug up them bones with all of his might. It was a tale which held me, ere in its tight grip He said to himself, supposing the specter might hear, And made me to be startled, each time the faucet “I will bury you proper, so I need not fear would drip. Beside the tall willow close to the Great Yukon The cold wind blowed And oh how it snowed It was a tale about an old Klondike miner If you will let me be, so my mining can go on” The night that Digger Dan died. Who spent all that he possessed, in his attempt to As the miner thought to himself, “Maybe then, this make life finer. spook can get his rest Over twenty years Dan had toiled He worked long days, at back-breaking toil And I can come out, among the best!” As the mighty Yukon roiled, Thawing ground, washing soil, So next day, bright and early But not a grain had he ever found In that frozen Klondike ground. When without warning, he suddenly fell dead The miner gathered the bones so surly, And the ground buried him, all but his head. Made a box and lined it with hay and straw, The cold wind blowed Months or years passed by, with none coming by And a lid from logs he’d saw. And oh how it snowed And then one day his mine another did spy. He laid those bones within with care The night that Digger Dan died.

He started to dig, and he heard a groan. And he hoped his gold he needn’t share. But Digger Dan he was no quitter He shook it off; he gave a moan Into town he went that night, Even though the cold so bitter And shovel in dirt, returned to his work. To get a preacher, swift and light Had robbed him of his filthy toes He worked all day, hearing howls and moans, To say some prayers and free himself And the tip of his bulbous nose.

Until at last, he uncovered the bones. Of this specter, spirit, ghost, Gin or elf. The cold wind blowed And he spent the night, in the fire’s warm glow When he returned to his claim next day And oh how it snowed When all at once, a specter did show; All his belongings were strewn astray, The night that Digger Dan died. It had the form of a man, riddled with age, ‘Cept the box of wood, straw and hay Then Dan’s incessant bad luck ended With hair that made it look like a gentle old sage. That alone boldly sat untouched, unscathed When his trusty shovel bended Its eyes, dark and shallow, And even the pit appeared as being re-paved. Broke in half and Dan did too Made the miner much less fallow. The preacher never seen such a thing As each bit he took and threw. The miner cursed and yelled, And the miner was certain he would take his wing. The cold wind blowed “You dead old man, belong back in Hell!” The preacher never flew And oh how it snowed The specter roamed from hill and dale Only looked pale and his hair it grew. The night that Digger Dan died. And as it went, it loosed a deafening wail. But he went straight to his work, The miner shook as he sat in the fire’s glow. A duty he would not shirk. One half hit the frozen ground Unearthed a nugget, gold he found And the specter seemed to walk along a straight row. The grave it was shallow The other half in twisted fate The miner watched, as the specter stopped But the preacher called it Hallow. Embedded itself in poor Dan’s pate. Right over the place where the bones had dropped. "Good enough for the bones of this poor soul The miner arose, crept to the hole. As we lay him to rest as is our goal. The cold wind blowed And oh how it snowed With his walking stick he used as a pole Praying and singing, we say our farewell The night that Digger Dan died. He jabbed at the specter, to see if it was real With hopes that he heeds what we’re trying to sel.l And passed right through it; he felt like a heel The specter he joined us as we sang beloved songs If you walk in winter through Dawson’s streets He jabbed at the bones to see what would happen And caused us to think we’d done something wrong And the Yukon sleeps neath icy sheets You just might hear Dan’s ghostly cry And quickly decided it was not the best action. We lowered the box and covered it with pay-dirt In the howling wind ‘Oh why God why?’ The specter then made a blood curling shrill. A little something we thought could not hurt. The miner jumped up and felt very ill. I continued to prospect and mine Yes the cold wind blowed He was whiter than pale his heart began to stutter And that specter would show up from time to time. And oh how it snowed The night that Digger Dan died. He thought to himself, “I must not mutter, Well, I still sees him now and then Get rid of these bones, should make me feel better And he is not malevolent but peaceful again. And maybe this specter will release my fetter.” He now only comes when the moon is full This concludes the Authors on Resolving to free himself of specter and bones And my dogs get ready to pull. 8th collection from last Of the miner he thought might be one called Jones. He would gather them in the morning light August's contest. It's been fun. When darkness left and he would have sight. This April month, the nights get shorter. The songs came first and then some other northern travels prompted her to write the poems. “I have amazing memories of that time (her residency) and being in this place,” she told her audience. “I’ve been coming here for years, and every time I come there’s a new crop along with the old crop and it’s this extraordinary community.” Earlier in the day she had led a song circle with local musicians, from amateurs to seasoned songwriters and expressed herself “blown away” by the talent and the experience. “For me,” Fellows said, “it was truly a gift to be here, and Christine Fellows especially to bring Leanne and Cud Eastbound, Alex up with their instruments.” The evening concluded with P12 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 2015 THE KLONDIKE SUN

The NDP were front and centre at anti- fracking demonstrations, for example. As for Sandy Silver, as usual, he changes his tune depending on who he thinks is listening.” THE KLONDIKE SUN Yukon Party Caucus researchers have also reviewed a copy of Petition #7 submitted to the Yukon Legislative Assembly (YLA) by the NDP, as supplied by the YLA Office. After multiple submissions thanks our volunteers! by the NDP, the total number of pages attached to the petition is now 189. The NDP claims of chief writer & editor - Dan Davidson approximately 7400 signatures appears inaccurate, as each page holds 20 signature spots, allowing for a maximum of 3780 signatures. A preliminary review of the petition also shows multiple proofreading - Betty Davidson, Alyssa Friesen, Dan Davidson blank lines and duplicate signatures suggesting an even lower total. The NDP should explain their submitted documentation that conflicts with their claims of 7400 signatures. layout - Dan & Alyssa “Since the Opposition Coalition does not form government, they sometimes take liberties in representing their opinions as fact,” added Pasloski. “As a sitting government, we know that subscription mailing/retailer deliveries - Yukoners deserve more - a government that does its homework and clarifies the facts. Sadly, we are Karen MacKay, Palma Berger, Colleen Smith, once again tasked with fact-checking information presented to the public by the opposition.” If Yukoners want to check the facts for themselves, they can request a copy of the petition through Judith Blackburn-Johnson their MLA, who can obtain it from the Yukon Legislative Assembly office THE KLONDIKE SUN WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 2015 P19
